Game Pops - a challenge to your video game music knowlegde
Yoshi3gg replied to stevencoltrane's topic in General Discussion
I was able to figure out 18 songs. 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17, 18, 24, 30, 35, 37 (took me a while before I was able to mentally place it though), 39, 45, 48, and 49. Edit: Oh, also, 22, but I didn't count it because my girlfriend knew it right away and I was able to figure it out from that, but I had never actually played the game before myself. -
Wow, I gotta agree with everyone so far, this is a really solid mix. Someone mentioned Katamari Damacy, and I'd like to add that, in addition to the KD similarities, it reminds me of some of the music in nifflas' freeware games. Very cool, very mellow, very atmospheric.

Okay, awesome. Still haven't gotten around to playing AoT, myself. Someday!

Which game in the series are you planning to mix? 5 Days, Trilby's Notes, or Art of Theft? I ask because the readme for 5 Days say that the songs were just pilfered from RPG Maker 2000. I think the other games have original soundtracks, but it's something to look into before submitting.

"Only one of these bullets is a blank. The blank weighs less than the other bullets. You can choose which bullet will be loaded into the gun that shoots you; can you correctly choose the blank if you can only weigh the bullets two times?"

I'm planning on picking this game up soon. There've been a lot of really great puzzle games coming out lately, like this and Zack & Wiki. It makes me so very, very happy. Only problem is, I doubt I'll be able to finish this game before Apollo Justice comes out, and I know that I'll be spending all of my free time playing that until I finish it. But I get the feeling Layton is the kind of game that you'd have absolutely no problem picking up where you left off months after setting it down.

I just finished Trials & Tribulations this morning, and I can say with confidence that there was no better way to end Phoenix's series. It pretty much tied together every major case in the series to date in a very satisfying way. Totally awesome. On a different note: Advance Wars next week!

Holy smokes. I used to love those books when I was younger. Completely forgot about them.

I love PC gaming, but my reasons for it haven't been mentioned anywhere else in this thread (from what I saw skimming through it). I mean, yeah, keyboard and mouse is a great setup for a lot of games. I could care less about graphics as long as the game's art direction is good and I can get a good framerate. But where PC gaming is important to me is in user-generated content. I loved Starcraft because I loved making maps, and the map-making community always pushed the envelope to make the game do things that I never would've thought possible while playing the single player campaign. I loved Morrowind because you could make your own quests, your own items, your own towns, or download any number of totally awesome plug-ins that totally changed the appearance of some of the less attractive things in the game (faces, book covers, etc.). Same thing with Oblivion. And then there's all the independent development going on; Knytt Stories is absolutely amazing (and it has a tool for making your own levels!). Anyway, I guess that's tangential to the original point. I think that a lot of devs for commercial hardcore PC games have forgotten what makes PC gaming so special in the first place, and it's become kind of dick-waving competition among the players to see who can eek out the most fps on mega-hyper-ultra settings. For me, while I do keep my machine up to date and able to run games I want to play smoothly, it's more about the special things that PC gaming brings to the table that console gaming can't due to licensing.

Terry Pratchett diagnosed with Alzhiemers.
Yoshi3gg replied to Moogle!'s topic in General Discussion
Everyone who is affected by it cares (family, friends, co-workers, etc.). The only reason it's different when it happens to a celebrity is because there's a larger pool of people who are affected. Furthermore, I'd hardly say that Alzheimer's has "[gained] importance" because Terry Pratchett's been diagnosed with it. It wasn't exactly an obscure disease last week, before this was announced. Anyway, this is pretty sad news for all of his fans. My girlfriend absolutely loves his books, and I've been meaning to get around to reading some of them myself. I hope his family's doing okay. -
OCR00448 - Pulseman "Stereo Superhero"
Yoshi3gg replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I just couldn't enjoy this mix after the first 30 seconds or so, unfortunately. I'm not a huge fan of this style as it is, and I'm completely unfamiliar with the source material; that coupled with the repetition made me quickly lose interest. The synths are really nice, but aside from that, it just feels like it's the same thing over and over again, and the key change at 1:17 does little to alleviate this problem. Not really music that you can listen to intently, but, as mentioned by other reviews, it probably makes pretty decent background music if you're doing other things. -
This mix is aptly named: It's short and it brings the funk! From the first five seconds you can tell that this mix stands out from being very different from everything else on OCR. It's very well-made and extremely entertaining. In response to the comment made five years ago, while the organ sample isn't the best quality, I think it ultimately works in the mix's favor, and complements the arrangement's feel quite nicely.

Very cool arrangement. The guitars sound great throughout the whole arrangement, with the section starting around 3:22 standing out as being particularly awesome. There's a good degree of variation throughout the entire mix; Danimal Cannon managed to keep my undivided attention for the entire four and a half minute runtime. This mix is a prime example of how a remixer can remain faithful to a source tune while bringing in something new. Can't wait to hear more from him! (As a side note: I totally love the title.)

Give the gift of reviews! (Underdog Remix Appreciation)
Yoshi3gg replied to big giant circles's topic in Announcements
I love this idea a lot; I did a little bit last year, but I think finals were coming up, and that prevented me from helping out too much. This year finals don't look like they'll be too bad, so I'll probably be able to review more -

I can't stop listening to this mix! Absolutely awesome work. Also, I agree with Palpable's comment: The "time is but a fading memory" section is absolutely perfect. -
DAMNIT. I just lost the game. I hope you're happy.

Zero Punctuation (Hilarious) Game Reviews
Yoshi3gg replied to sephfire's topic in General Discussion
Bad news: No new Zero Punctuation this week. Good news: New game by Yahtzee! Starring Trilby (but unrelated to the Chzo Mythos)! Information here: http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/ More colons: Yes. -
When can we expect this to be posted? I'm very impatient, you see.

Does this mean I can look forward to Savannah Fury - A Cheetah Men II Arrangement Album in the coming months? If so, I call track 5. Wait, no, track 4. Wait. Wait. I CAN'T DECIDE. Also I could watch that monkey boss fight all day. It syncs up with the music just well enough to make it look like he's dancing away.

Wow. ....Wow. Latest update BLEW MY MIND.

Zero Punctuation (Hilarious) Game Reviews
Yoshi3gg replied to sephfire's topic in General Discussion
I absolutely LOVE Zero Punctuation; Yahtzee's absolutely mind-blowingly hilarious, and he manages to do it while giving really fair reviews. And yes, as mentioned earlier, he makes some ridiculously great adventure games. I'm playing through the x Days series right now (currently on 7 Days a Skeptic, the second of four). Also, for fans of 5 Days, there's actually a Source mod adaptation of it currently under development (and Yahtzee's involved with it, so it probably won't be totally bastardized). According to their FAQ, they're hoping to have it out before the end of 2008 (and for the artistically inclined, they're currently looking for a concept artist, character modeller/animator, item modeller, and texture artist) -
Ohhh my god BGC that was amazing. SOMEONE MAKE THIS QUICK.

This game not only met, but greatly exceeded my expectations, and the Coulton song at the end was the icing on the.. uh... c..cake.
