bonzai!
FAC 29 Theme: WTF Welcome to the October 2009 edition of OCR's "official" Fan Art Competition (FAC)! This month's theme is WTF! As a change of pace, this month's competition is going to have a style of art theme as opposed to a content theme. And that style is the world renowned hand-print style. Here are a few famous examples to get your creative juices flowing: The use of such top-of-the-line art materials as googly-eyes, glitter, and construction paper is highly encouraged. And your entry can be from any video game your heart desires. PM your entries to me by SUNDAY OCTOBER 25TH. -------------------------- RESULTS and the winner is...........Chiral!!! It was actually a tie between Chiral and Vilecat as far as points went, but we need a winner...so I looked at who got the most first place votes. That also resulted in a tie. SO I looked at who got the most second place votes, and that was Chiral! Number 1 -- Chiral, 14 Number 2 -- Diotrans, 3 Number 3 -- Dhsu, 3 Number 5 -- Vilecat, 14 Number 6 -- bonzai, 13 Number 7 -- piendry, 7 +honorable ROFL Chiral: 3 first place votes, 2 second place votes Vilecat: 3 first place votes, 1 second place votes -------------------------- ENTRIES Number 1 Number 2 Number 3 Number 5 Number 6 Number 7 awwwwwwwwesome PM your votes (top 3 picks!) to me by THURSDAY OCTOBER 29TH. -------------------------- If your unfamiliar with the FAC, here is some interesting reading material. FAQ What is the Fan Art Competition? The Fan Art Competition is a monthly event where artists create some form of art based on a certain theme. What is the theme? The theme is decided by the winner of the previous months competition (most of the time) and must be video game related. Who can submit art? Anyone. What are my restrictions? You are allowed to submit one entry, but other than that there are no restrictions. There are no size, quality, image size restrictions. Who decides the winner? The OCR community. Anyone who wants to vote, can vote. How does voting work? You vote for your three favorite entries, from first to third. These entries are given points based on the order in which you voted for them in. For example, 1st. Rambo 2nd. bonzai 3rd. Nyuura In this case, Rambo would get 3 points, bonzai would get 2, and Nyuura would get 1 (although Nyuura gets three most of the time). When and how do we see the results? After the voting period is over, I'll announce the winner and show the tallied scores for all entries. If I enter the contest can I vote? Yes, and voting for yourself is allowed if you really want to. Rules and Regulations! 1) Any art submitted must be based off of the months theme. 2) No nudity. 3) Your entry must be created within the month. It cannot have been something you've created in the past or partially finished prior to the announcement of the theme. 4) All entries must be 100% your work. Simply altering something created by someone else may be cool, but is not allowed as an entry. DEADLINES! PM your entries to me by SUNDAY OCTOBER 25TH. relyanCe
doing that takes effort i just don't have the drive to produce =/
The Coop
Hmmm... After taking the month off following the FAC 27 debacle, looks like I'll be doing the same for another month. Sorry bonzai!, but I'm going to pass.
friendlyHunter
Hmmmm... what if the theme included any kind of collage? I don't want to go out and buy finger paint, but I'm sure everyone has glue or tape lying around, and stuff that can be attached onto paper. Also as a contest, a collage is something where you can put effort into it and come up with something amazing, and the medium's limitations can give it extra awesomeness (especially if the artist limits it even further in some creative way). If you put a lot of effort and artistry into a hand-print, it kind of looks like you're cheating >< What do you think? Also: WTF! :
friendlyHunter
LOL, how about "draw with your non-dominant hand" month?
Sindra
Eh, when you said a "WTF Month" I thought you would mean a surreal theme, like your favorite WTF moment from a game. That would have been a fun challenge.
The Coop
I'm honestly surprised that FAC 29 wasn't geared towards being very Halloween-centric... be it by going with a franchise or individual game that lends itself to being spooky (Demon's Crest, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, etc.), or by choosing a very broad subject, and creating a "make it spooky" clause. linkspast
Im going to enter this... I just hope no one shares the same Idea I have.
cobaltstarfire
Would people be allowed to just trace their hand and do it digitally? I don't plan on entering this, but it'll probably be easier for people to do it if they aren't restricted to real media for their hand printy fun. Rambo
That would have been a fun challenge. Funny, I cant think of a better set of words to describe this exact theme. This is something that absolutely everyone can do in 5-10 mins. And if people want to make a more serious effort, its more than within the realm of possibility. Sounds like a perfect theme for a thread full of people who generally wait till the last damn minute to enter (or not enter). I don't think we'd often see a difference in turn out if this competition only lasted 1 week tbh. I think cobalt has a good idea with the tracing. Both would deliver similar results. This is a great theme in that even if you don't want to enter, you can make a really good "for the lulz" entry in minutes. That way we won't only have ~3 entrants. Whether you want to make a serious entry or a hilarious entry, this is a wicked fun theme.
bonzai!
Gah, okay this isn't how I wanted this to go at all Um, a couple points I want to address: I chose this theme because we've been having a serious lack of participation in the past couple months of the competition. The reasons for this have been “not enough time,” “i tried but couldn't make the deadline,” “no motivation,” etc. I realize that the OCR FAC is also the Procrastinators of the World Unite competition sometimes. So I hoped to choose a theme that anyone could do in a few minutes, as a way to get our renowned procrastinators to make an entry, and also to maybe get some new people who don't necessarily consider themselves great artists to make entries. I'm sad of seeing 3-5 entries. Friendlyhunter: you made the point of not wanting to go out and get fingerpaint, which I can understand (though I personally have tons of little crappy tubes of paint sitting around my place, so I'm not exactly in that position). And I was more than willing to accept hand-print outlines or cut-outs, as well as foot-prints or thumb-print works. (cut out hand-print Santa that I refrained from putting in my original examples) I also thought of the “non-dominant hand” theme And was the tiniest bit hopeful of using it in a future WTF themed month. But seeing how this one is already turning out, I'm less than optimistic. And the last point you made about the limited artistry in a piece was kind of my intention with this theme. I wanted silliness, ridiculousness, and creativity, though not necessarily artistry. But hey, you could do something like this: Um um um, this is already TL;DR, but the last thing I wanted to note was The Coops comment on a Halloween theme for October. The last person to run this competition was Bleck, and for the month of December he made the theme “A Final Fantasy Christmas.” Unfortunately, this had very poor turnout, and it also caused the winner of the November's competition to have to wait to choose a theme until January. This would have kinda ruined the system (though in the end it was worked out). So even though this wouldn't have been a problem as I am both the previous winner and in charge of the comp, it's still why I'm reluctant to take over themes for a certain month (Halloween for October, Christmas for December, Boss month for June). And this concludes the longest post I've made on OCR. I'm sorry to hear so many of you aren't inspired to be silly by this theme. Maybe next month. As always, if anyone has any suggestions for how I can run this competition better, get more participation, get more work out of you guys, please tell me. Or if you'd like to run this competition yourself, I'd probably be willing to give you the job at this point.
friendlyHunter
Well, I'm in if we can trace our hands. [Fake edit] Time to read bonzai's post! [Edit] Ok, I read bonzai's post. No comment at this time!
Rambo
Ok, I read bonzai's post. No comment at this time! What, are you gonna wait till the last day possible to comment?
cobaltstarfire
I've just stopped participating because I wasn't really getting any personal satisfaction out of doing them, and I wasn't really improving any at all. Also bleck said I sucked at some point so it really dampened my spirits to keep trying at all. I think I did one entry after that? And came out near the bottom. So I decided I'd just find a critique forum that can help me unsuck, and maybe draw something that people actually like looking at.
metalsnakejuice
This is going to be fun to enter this:-P
Vilecat
This month isn't necessarly about getting better at what you do; such skills take a lot of time to develop, mostly if you change your subjects constantly (human to non-human, different art styles of originals, etc). Take it as a new horizon to explore. Working on more than one media can be very beneficial, and it's good gymnastic for the imagination. I'll definitely try to enter this month, but I'll wait for the mid-semester break (Thanksgiving!) since a lot of my "3D" craft material is at home and not on campus. I'll think of my subject 'til then :
cobaltstarfire
Or...I could just post on the critique forum I'm on now and get constructive criticism. I'm kind of sour on this competition so I don't expect to be entering again anytime soon unless an idea leaps out and slaps me.

Gollgagh
*participation problems* yeah, I had the same problems when I was trying to run FLMC I thought it was a cool competition, but it's hard to keep interest when I can hardly click my way around fl studio, much less make anything coherent

I'm really sorry to hear that I remember your zombie yoshi from the first competition I ever participated in (and I remember voting for it too!). Bleck is a real troll sometimes, and definitely shouldn't have said something like that, especially if he was running the competition... But I can understand your desire to participate in something that could help you improve your art. I liked the FAC because it motivated me to work towards a finished piece, which I'm not prone to do on my own. But we really don't have that much discussion about entries, helpful critique or otherwise. And then the new competition goes up and people stop posting in the old one forever. I personally would love to have more time to comment on people's artwork after the results are in, but with the majority of the month provided to working on entries, there really isn't that much time before the next competition gets started. Dhsu
Maybe shorten the submission period by a couple days to give some time for feedback? I think that with everyone submitting at the last minute anyway, it wouldn't affect too many people.
relyanCe
basically whatever the deadline is, i'll have something finished the day of if i'm gonna do it at all. It's just how I work. So i'm cool with an earlier deadline
Vilecat
Making the deadline a few days earlier alone won't help much. There would need to be some sort of C&C "enforcement". Since OCR is more known for having artists on the audio than visual aspect of arts, you can't expect a lot to comment whenever they check a new artwork. It's a bit complicated to encourage C&C in a contest-related thread. Usually there's another thread specifically for that. Unless it's like I've seen on some very advanced art forums where submitting isn't anonymous but there are some judges basing their decision on how well the theme is represented, originality, how polished the work looks and so on, while everyone posting in this thread give constructive critics and/or rate the works. Of course it's the kind of forum/thread where you have at least a dozen artists participating monthly and a lot more posting to follow the comp. I hope everyone understands what I mean.
bonzai!
yeah, I get what you're saying Vilecat. And I guess it's a little much to hope for that kind of constructive discussion about pieces. But even just a little conversation about what people have spent so much time working on would be nice. About the deadline: for the past couple months I made the deadline the last Sunday of the month. This is because I had some complaints about "it always having been the last sunday" and people having weird feelings about the deadline being a random day of the week. So do other people have an opinion? I know relyanCe said he's cool with an earlier deadline, but do you guys care if it's a specific day of the week, or if I base it off of how close to the end of the month it is. Chiral
*sneaks in quietly* I remembered my password! Okay, now I feel really bad for not showing up at all... >_>a I agree that it would be nice to have more discussion and stuff about pieces, so it's not just like. "Oh, you won or lost, neeeeext!" I'll try and do something this month since it should be quick XD Personal and work projects are beating me up. ;; *hides again*
