m68030 Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 Tetris (GB) 'McVaffe Quasi Ultimix' Deceptivly starting with a slightly augmented original sample sounding lead line of this classic theme, this remix very quickly reminds you that McVaffe doesn't pull any punches. Swirly stabby synths lead up a filling middle that pauses for a moment to build up to piano interlude. Finishing in again in the original NES sounding lead this mix is fun, but a little quirky. Quote
bartkusa Posted June 9, 2002 Posted June 9, 2002 I don't know a finer Tetris remix. Many have tried their hands, and Lord knows a number of fine reproductions have come out, but McVaffe just pulls some crazy shit on this one. McVaffe has a heck of a reputation for manipulating games' original SFX (see the Castlevania sound mix on VGMix.com), and it really shines hear. The SFX-break at 1:30 is an instant classic! The song makes it's way back with a great piano segue, and then it all comes down. Yay! Quote
BigDRS Posted July 1, 2002 Posted July 1, 2002 From trance to classsical to sound fx, this remix has got it all. The ultimate in tetris remix, hands down. For years the Tetris themes have been stuck in my head just waiting for this song to finally put them to rest knowing that they have been fulfilled. Quote
andr3w Posted July 3, 2002 Posted July 3, 2002 This was one of the first OC ReMixes I downloaded, and I have to say it stands as one of the best. Nicely done! Quote
skawttieboy Posted July 4, 2002 Posted July 4, 2002 Very nice...I love the original Game Boy clips...awesome job! Quote
Eccles Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 The original game boy sounds are well used. I also like the tetris noises as 'precussion' at the piano part, that's a nice fresh take. Quote
Elex Synn Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 Another great one from my favorite! All hail lord Vaffe! This track has to be one of my favorites. Quote
Ignis Posted October 9, 2002 Posted October 9, 2002 Nostalgia anyone? I loved how he took the sounds from the game and intigrated them into the beat. Kick ass mix. Quote
zircon Posted April 20, 2003 Posted April 20, 2003 I don't think this is McVaffe's best work. The original is used too much, with not enough improvisation. It really shines at the part where the in game sounds are used as percussion, and the piano section is nice as well. Other than that though, it sounds like it was slapped together fairly quickly. herograw Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 mcvaffe has been responsible for two firsts on this site that i thought no "one man" would ever be able to accomplish: first remix by a woman and first collaboration remix. surely, he must be unstoppable -rob Quote
djBOB Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 top ten man.. top ten.. I forgot how much I liked tetris.. or maybe it's just ur song I like.. anyways.. it makes me wanna say "GO... GO... GO... GO.." while someone is breakdancing to this junk.. ROX man ROX Quote
Ashgad Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 Irresistable. A good, if somewhat elementary, intro leads into a straight-out awesome sfx section. Then it's piano time. Mmm. I could listen to this track all day. That's saying a lot; I must've listened to this theme for about a million hours by now. Another great track from McVaffe. Quote
Luprand Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 I first heard this mix as the background to a StarWars Kid video, and I get a chuckle every time I hear it. Both inventive and hilarious, it's a wonderful piece to listen to if you have some extra energy. --Sij Quote
quiet assassin Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 hard to believe, but they actually managed to take this extremely catchy tune and ump it up to be even more catchy. you guys are my official heroes of the day! Quote
TheDro Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Very fun indeed. The block sounds as percussion is soooooo cool. lovely piano and a piss off ending Quote
RimFrost the Tourianist Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Another great quality remix by McVaffe Extremely catchy. Quote
Mimeblade Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 I don't know if anyone knew this, or if they ever bothered to check it out, but the Gameboy Version of Tetris actually has something somewhat secretive to it's music. If you pause the game while the music plays and unpause it, the baseline for the music seems to increase or alter itself. Just something I found a long time ago that I'd share. Quote
lady zelda Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I don't know if anyone knew this, or if they ever bothered to check it out, but the Gameboy Version of Tetris actually has something somewhat secretive to it's music. If you pause the game while the music plays and unpause it, the baseline for the music seems to increase or alter itself. Just something I found a long time ago that I'd share. Whoa...it's interesting how it happens that way. It's either a glitch, or something that was intentional...I think it's a glitch. Okay, anybody know the name of the Bach piece that is apparently what Song C is based off of? I can't seem to identify it. So back on topic. I really like the game sound effects that you add here. I like how it goes from the original tune and eventually adds that amazing Russian beat. An awesome salute to the original. Good work. Quote
KogeJoe Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Yay! Tetris goes Lambada! Not a COMPLETE rip-off, at least there is his own base and percussion. It's alright! Quote
drew2794 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 OMG8O That is the tetris theme song I know and love! It is a little altered but it even had the gameboy noise when you turn it on and the sound when you lose on it too. Brings back the greatest memories of those long car rides and I had for entertainment was my gameboy and a few games (one of which was tetris of couse) Quote
OceansAndrew Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 A little too generic for me. There are some creative parts, where the tetris noises are used for percussion, but the beginning is pretty bad by comparison. I'd have loved to hear more tetrisized percussion. Quote
Dafydd Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Ok, so, after talking to Willrock about how McVaffe turned out to be using several remixer names, he found this for me. It's pretty funny how the writeup still says this was made by 2 people (according to Willrock it's the first collab in OCR's history, and it turns out to be made by only one guy. Bummer), while searching for one of them yields no hits in the database. Maybe that's why DJP seems to prefer referring to remixers in writeups using their real names nowadays... Quote
