Devyn
You know, I played a fan-translated rom of Mother (aka Earthbound Zero) and it's actually pretty good. So, if you can't get to Mother 3 yet, so should go back and try the first one.

CHz
Has Earthbound even been announced as coming to Virtual Console yet? Because not even Japan has it yet, and I have yet to see any news saying that it's a planned future release. I mean, EARTHBOUND FUCK YEAH and all that jazz, but they're really jumping the gun here. wormguy
I still have my SNES cart. That isn't stopping me from buying it on VC.
Avatar of Justice
EarthBound is coming out on the Virtual Console soon, and its sales will be THE determining factor in whether MOTHER 3 is brought to America or not. Did I miss something or did you not cite a source for this information? Where's your proof? You make it sound like Nintendo went on the record about this. Steben
You know, I played a fan-translated rom of Mother (aka Earthbound Zero) and it's actually pretty good. So, if you can't get to Mother 3 yet, so should go back and try the first one. That wasn't a fan-translation. It was the official translation by NOA for an NES release. The NES release never came to be, though, so it was shelved, until somebody got the prototype cart at an auction, and the ROM was dumped. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_%28video_game%29 Anyway. If my roommate (who owns our Wii) doesn't get Mother 2, I will. One of the greatest games ever. It's the only game that I recall getting addicted to, where it affected my life so much that my mom told me I couldn't play it anymore. That didn't bother me too much, because I was stuck in the future as a robot, and was underleveled. Also, I couldn't figure out how to beat Gigyas, even with the strategy guide. :( In short, Earthbound stinks.
herograw
I thought the battle system was all flavors of gay. Good ideas but poorly implemented. Anywho no wii for me but i'll make sure to talk my friends into grabbing the game when it comes out.
Critical Hit
Has Earthbound even been announced as coming to Virtual Console yet? Because not even Japan has it yet, and I have yet to see any news saying that it's a planned future release.I mean, EARTHBOUND FUCK YEAH and all that jazz, but they're really jumping the gun here. This is what I meant by my earlier post (sorry I wasn't clear). I can't find any indication of Nintendo (or even anyone at all besides starmen.net) saying that this is the case. Do they have some Nsider (lolol) within Nintendo that's giving them this info or something?
Red Shadow
Reid Young has connections. Many of them. Including some within nintendo itself, yes.
Avatar of Justice
Anybody read how the final fight with Giygas was based on some traumatic childhood event that the director had? From the Giygas Wikipedia article Shigesato Itoi has revealed in interviews that Giygas' dialogue in Mother 2/EarthBound was inspired by a traumatic childhood experience where he mistakenly walked into an adult movie theatre and caught a glimpse of a sex/rape scene in the 1957 movie Kenpei and the Dismembered Beauty. The common misconception is that this film is a porno flick, but in fact is simply a dramatic take on the Rape of Nanking. More detail: http://boards.ign.com/earthbound/b5345/100109838/r100654716/ Pretty wild stuff. Sort've explains why I've always found Earthbound to be a bit creepy despite the ostensible light-heartedness of it.

I just finished the game. I had a save on it from right before you build the Phase Distorter. BEST. ENDING. EVER.

The Phalanx
Did this thread make anybody else pop their Earthbound cartridge in and start playing the damn thing again? Earthbound is the 16-bit version of Deus Ex. Every time its mentioned, someone starts playing it again. ...wait. Shit, I just damned about a dozen people, didn't I? Nicholestien
Earthbound is my favorite game of all time. Earthbound > Everything paula is hot man. SHES Hawt!
yangfeili
I think part of what makes Earthbound so great is that it can be appreciated at different levels, kind of like Calvin and Hobbes. When I was younger, I thought all the nonsensical stuff like evil hippies and trippy backgrounds was funny. But when I replayed the game years later, I was better able to recognize and appreciate a lot of the meta-humor regarding game design and the conventions of the RPG genre (my favorite being the message if you try to use the Insignificant Item, which I understood as a jab at completionist gamers). I'd love to see a new game which does to the post-FFVII RPG genre what Earthbound did to the Dragon Warrior-era games.
Yoshi3gg
BEST. ENDING. EVER. I AGREE. I just beat the game yesterday morning, and man, it didn't disappoint.

Trenthian
When's it coming out and what controllers can I use for it? If I don't have to get a classic control, I may finally get this bloody game. Like all SNES games, it'll work with the Gamecube controller or the Classic controller only, and the GC controller shouldn't pose any problems(Unlike some games) Man, someone donate a controller to this man so he can play what is quite possibly the greatest 16 bit Rocket-Propelled-Game of all time. Mr.Roboto
Actually.. It might be playable on the Wiimote,if they initiate the ability to do what you did with the SNES Controller, and that was using just the pad and the L button.
