  1. "When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world... will be metal" -- Ultron Metal remix of "Heroes" from Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron Composed by Alan Silvestri (Avengers) & Danny Elfman (Age of Ultron) I love the music from the movie and wanted to pay it tribute. Enjoy!
  2. A little something I threw together in a short bit today. I quite like it and might submit the finished product. It's been years since I've submitted anything here and my quality has come a long way so it might be worth it.
  3. Some thoughts: Vocals: To some extent silly on purpose but the performance and quality could be better, the recording situation (just my apartment) is a bottleneck though. I do feel this is my best attempt so far at mixing clean vocals at least so yay, progress. (Lyrics are very "in-joke" so feel free to ignore.) Guitars & Bass: Pretty happy with them (DI, amp sims), a lot going on at once sometimes but still sounds alright (IMO). Maybe the rhythm guitars could be a bit crunchier to cut through when it gets busy. Eternal struggle. Brass (Impact Soundworks) and strings (Kontakt's factory stuff + a tiny bit IS Furia): They do what I wanted them to do but could be clearer, still learning to mix stuff like that. Kick drum: I'm always pretty happy with it until I think someone from the VGM community is going to listen 'cause I know y'all like it way louder.
  4. So here's a medley of sorts of Mega Man 2, though the vast majority is Dr Wily's Stage. It's a thrash metal ballad so it starts off slow but picks up about halfway. It also has a bit of jazzy piano at the end. https://soundcloud.com/j-quinton-545429679/dr-wily-stage-draft-9 Also, apparently this song has been remixed a bunch of times so hopefully I've brought something new... Let me know what I can improve on! Link to originals:
  5. Hi all, I know this is an overremixed song, but I had a mix in the past that I submitted and never passed the panel. But today I bring you a totally brand new remix with a bit of real instrument. Wanted to test the design for a long time now. Hear it and enjoy it. It's drumstepish/dubsteppish metal song. https://soundcloud.com/rockos-1/rockos-undersea-palace Edit: Original source
  6. Here's my first full song. Nothing truely revolutionary, just pure instrumental goodness. Only guitar and sampled drums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmNLfei2g38 Feedback is of course welcome and encouraged, I'm trying to grow, no matter how bitter it gets
  7. Hello all! First of all, I'm new to the forum. I thought it'd be nice to meet some musicians with some similar interests since most of the musicians I work with aren't too much into video games. I wanted to share a quick Super Mario Bros. cover I made a while ago and re-recorded recently. It's just a quick metal version of the Underworld theme from the Super Mario All Stars version. One day when I was waiting for my computer to do something, I was playing with my guitar and kind of came up with this fun little quickie. It's only about 40 seconds long, but maybe some of you might get a kick out of it! https://soundcloud.com/shanestrife/underworld Gear used is listed in the description. Apologies if the low end is out of whack. I'm in a place and I'm not quite used to it yet. All crits and comments welcome! Thanks for listening!
  8. Hi everyone I'm new to this community and after two weeks of back and forth, I found the courage to post my most recent project. I hope you don't mind that this is going to be a somewhat longer post; I want to share some background on the track and on myself. The track is called "Into the Cold Light" and is a metal remix of "Triage at Dawn" from the Half-Life 2 soundtrack by Kelly Bailey. Most likely you have at some point already heard DJ Dains famous remix of this short, yet incredibly powerful ambient piece. I found it very inspiring when I arranged my own cover. Sources: Original (Kelly Bailey): https://youtu.be/rvyswm1UMko DJ Dains Remix: https://youtu.be/iy61r3Qkm6o Into the Cold Light: SoundCloud (download provides MP3 320 kbps): https://soundcloud.com/bkm/into-the-cold-light Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zM35R3RsWA GEAR I used Cubase 7 as DAW and EZDrummer with the Metal Heads addon as drum sequencer. Everything else (piano, strings, choir, ...) is stock Cubase instruments. Guitar tracks weere recorded via DI, using a Radial Pro48 DI box into an Alesis iO2 audio interface. I've been using a dedicated DI box for the first time on this mix and it made a huge difference in clarity and note definition - the iO2's unbalanced guitar input is astonishingly bad and gave me clipping issues even at lowest gain settings in the past (I use high-output pickups, that's probably the reason). Guitars were recorded with an ESP LTD MH-417 and bass was recorded with an Ibanez SG 405. My guitar tone is courtesy of the free "Emissary" software amp sim by Ignite Amplifications, in combination with mic impulses by Red Wire and Guitar Hacks. Aside from EZDrummer, I've been using freeware and stock plugins exclusively for mixing and mastering. Lately, I've been in love with a lot of Antress plugins like the Modern Analoguer (tape saturation) and their vintage console emulations, even though they have the nasty habit to occasionally crash Cubase since they are not being developed anymore. ISSUES WITH THE TRACK There are some glaring issues with this track. From what I read in the rules it is definitely not up to the OCRemix standards, so I do not plan on submitting it. Here are some things that I am aware of: Bass is an incoherent mess. I'm struggling with the headphones I use for mixing. I'm still very much fighting with my guitar skills and with latency issues, so some riffs and especially the solo are not as tight as they could be. I refuse to edit my takes, so at least it's an honest performance. Frankly, I started practicing with a metronome much too late and it's coming back to bite me. Balance between rhythm and lead guitars is off at various points during the track. The piano gets drowned out during the busier parts of the track, my EQing needs some more work as well. I mastered too loud, there's clipping. You can hear it clearly after the orchestral intro when the guitars kick in. Mastering is my biggest weak-spot, although I am starting to become at least a bit proficient with multiband compressors. Overall, the track would profit from some more brilliance, but I was unable to achieve that without making things sound harsh. LAST WORDS First of all, thanks if you made it through my ramblings. Despite all the problems, I really hope that there's one or two of you who enjoy the mix. I would appreciate your feedback immensely! Also, from what I've seen so far, there is not that many Cubase users on here, are there? I have been using Cubase for 5 years now and have found myself acquiring some knowledge on mixing and mastering with free / stock VST plugins, so if you have questions, I would be glad to help! Just bear in mind that I come from a metal background Cheers
  9. My interpretation of the Knight Rider theme music. Loved this show when I was a kid and I don't think any of the TV shows since bearing the 'Knight Rider' name have ever done the original justice. Please enjoy! 10. Hey there! Lots of firsts for me with this thread: first post on OCR, first game remix, first track that I take the time to actually polish. Anyway, here's my take on the main theme of Panzer Dragoon Zwei, one of my cherished games back in the Saturn days. I took the main melody (about 30-40 seconds) and for good or bad turned it into some 5min+ prog metal/rock number. I'm afraid it's quite liberal, but hopefully it doesn't cross the line. Source: ReMix: current version 31/07/2015 version (ending a bit on the loud side) older version from october 2011 (different mix and libraries) Source breakdown: 0:00 - 0:45 | Theme on bagpipes 0:45 - 1:22 | Theme variations played by the two lead guitars 1:22 - 1:40 | Original part (melody is actually borrowed from a folk song) 1:40 - 2:17 | Further variations on lead guitar and bagpipes (more loosely connected) 2:17 - 2:35 | Original part 2:35 - 3:49 | Variations on clean guitar 3:49 - 4:07 | Theme played by bass 4:07 - 4:27 | Loose variation on lead clean guitar 4:27 - 4:45 | Guitar solo loosely based on theme 4:45 - 5:04 | Theme on bagpipes, harmonized theme on lead guitar 5:04 - 5:13 | More variations on lead guitar and bagpipes 5:13 - 5:45 | Theme ending repeated Some interesting and not-so-interesting trivia about the track: - The Sky Boat in the title stands for the airship Shelcoof, which Lundi and his dragon Lagi chase throughout the whole game. But it also refers to a Scottish folk song called The Skye Boat Song, which is not an uncommon tune to play on bagpipe. I actually used the melody from this song at 1:22. - I'm pretty sure Grandia's Farewell To Sue was an inspiration for the part beginning at 3:49. This song had quite an impact on me when I was young. On an unrelated note: the soundtrack had some bagpipes in it. - The trailing melody starting on the left guitar at 5:22 is a small nod to the Witcher menu theme (see 0:55 and 1:35). Unrelated note: bagpipes in there too! - Apart from the source, I listened to the on the Alternative Elements album quite a lot. It's a bit of a stretch, but I think the strings starting at 0:35 in that song have somehow resulted in what's happening near 1:59 in my remix. - I was trying to go for a "journey" feel, so there are few parts repeated, the whole track is more like a linear progression instead of something with verses / choruses. Exceptions are 0:46 - 1:40 and 1:40 - 2:35, which are constructed identically (and alternate between 3/4 and 4/4). Many thanks in advance for your feedback!
