View Full Version : PRC156 - PRC's Sixth Anniversary (Free Round)

The People's Remix Competition 156

Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! (www.doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/PRCcommercial.wmv)

A whole year is already over, it's the sixth birthday of PRC. After PRC155 where only Evktalo (and the Bonus from Hylian Lemon) entered, it's time for a special edition. Evktalo may decide the source for PRC157. After a year, time for some statistics:
- PRC has 17 different winners this season, out of 25 rounds. Some rounds has a double winner
- OneUp won the most rounds; he was three times a winner from a PRC round.
- 32 Remixers entered PRC in season 6.
- Setokaibarocket entered PRC the most this season, ten times (1 bonus). Just64helpin entered 8 times, OneUp (with 2 bonus mixes) and Bundeslang 7 times.
- Ambient, Joystick, Prophecy, Rexy, TheoConfidor and Thu won all the rounds they entered. Bundeslang entered 7 times, but didn’t win a round (noob!).
- 86 eligible songs appeared in this PRC year.
- Including the 8 bonus mixes PRC has 94 songs

I'm not giving any prices, because I don't want that I promise something and not give it (like happened before). But the winner may select a source which will be used in PRC158, not PRC157 like stated before, that round will have double source.
You want to know the source for PRC156??

It's the anniversary edition. Feel free to give me anything you want. Zelda, Mario, Megaman, Final Fantasy, Monopoly, Godzilla; everything is allowed. Non OCR songs are encouraged and get 3 points bonus, so make sure to pick a Non OCR song. But if you want to remix Mega Man 3 - Intro for PRC this might be your only chance. Even songs from previous PRC rounds are allowed. Only one restriction: the song you pick has to be a VG tune and it's obligated to tell which source you used (game - theme - console).

Free Round - Free Theme

ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC156)

It's the first time PRC has a free source selection for everyone. This means you can do anything you want, but it has to be a VG-tune. Song picks don't make restrictions for following PRCs, all sources which are used in this round are selectable for next PRCs except tunes with an Ocremix.

Make sure you read the rules carefully

Fine Print:
PRC instructions
Start remixing with your song for this PRC. Don't continue working on a remix you already started and finish that for PRC (I can't control it, just don't do it in fairness to other participants).
Limitations at ThaSauce require your entry to be 6MB or less in size. Length for length's sake and MIDI rips are not allowed.
Entries must be posted in the ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC156) by WEDNESDAY November 4th at 3:59 am ThaSauce time (Check my signature (below) and the ThaSauce page for the exact time left. .
You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix.
Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted.
Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they recieve a free first place vote added onto their score.

...hmm....thinking about enterting...and possibly knocking two or three birds out with one BIG ASS STONE! I'm gonna go see if the troops from OHC want to rally and join in this.

I love excuses to make music that has more than one use in the end. :nicework: Since this is my first time entering, and I have read the semi-fine print, anything I should be made especially aware of?

10-25-2009, 12:23 AM
Woah.... I can't pass this up, yet I do not see how this could possibly work. O_o

10-25-2009, 01:27 AM
Alright, time to finish some sketches that I had bouncing around in my head for these past 4 PRCs.

This is a brillant idea. If only days were 48 hours instead of 24...
Anyone's up for a collab on this one?

10-26-2009, 08:29 PM
I'm trying to come up with stuff... nothing concrete is settling in yet. Going to try to submit though.

The minimum length for a PRC is 168 hours (1 week). Now you have two weeks, so you can almost say that days actually have 48 hours this week.

Looking forward for the songs, I hope many of you are able to post an entry before the deadline.

Count me in =P
My mix is more or less ready by my judgment (made most of it within the first 2 nights of reading this topic, added embellishments on the third) but I'm going to try polish it up in some ways if I can.

10-28-2009, 02:08 AM
I have my source selected, and my arrangement started. I am reaching far into obscurity for this one. ;)

The score was done by a composer who scored two games total for Nintendo. One of his scores is pretty well-known. The other, not so.

10-31-2009, 08:41 AM
For anyone trying to think of a game to remix, a few games with awesome soundtracks and very very few OCRs are Plok, Alundra, and EVO: Search for Eden. Just some food for thought.

10-31-2009, 09:53 AM
Why do I only check for new PRCs when the good ones are almost over? :-x I'll have a shot but I suck with deadlines and probably won't finish in time.

10-31-2009, 08:37 PM
I'm working on mine, and at this point I have at least something to upload; hopefully I'll work on it quite a bit more. Looks to me that there's no OCR mixes from the whole series of the game I'm mixing a piece, actually pieces, from. Sentence. Broke.

2 Days to finish.

I'm literally almost done mine. I have a few drum notes to edit and a little flair to put in places, and it should be done. This was great, gave me the inspiration and excuse to do a song I've been wanting to do for ages.

11-02-2009, 01:58 PM
I decided to extend the deadline with 7 hours to give people (including myself) more time. After that, the voting deadline is sunday.
PRC157, with the source from Evktalo will still start on Friday, what means that PRC157 starts before PRC156 has ended.

The winner from this rounds selects a source for PRC158, not PRC157 like stated before. This is because that round couldn't start before sunday if I didn't change it.
The winner from PRC157 will also select a source for PRC158. (This means if you win both PRC156 and PRC157 you may select two sources for that round).

11-03-2009, 10:38 PM
I've got the drums and the keyboard leads down, technically I just need the bass. I wasn't able to record it on my own, so I'm going to borrow a bit of gear. The extension comes in handy.

Cool to see four submissions already! Hoping for many more!

11-03-2009, 11:36 PM
Lol what? I won most times this year? :D
Almost time to get something done to celebrate!

11-04-2009, 12:59 AM
Ugh I tried to come up with something for this but I'm falling short. Normally I'd submit a dud track just to submit... but I don't think that works for PRC as well as it does for OHC.

Okay, my mix is as ready as it'll ever be I think, lol..

Yeees it does. Look at the previous round and my winning entry. :)

In fact, look at almost any of my entries.

Uploaded my song. Good to see 7 other songs and I hope more will appear in the following 6 hours and 40 minutes. Nice that everyone has submitted a Youtube / Mid link for recognize from the source.

Here's the voting stage
As traditional, The Anniversary Edition has a lot of songs. This year 9 Remixers made it: Liquidwind, Binweasel, Level99, Just64helpin, Diotrans, Setokaibarocket, Chickenwarlord, Evktalo and myself. Chickenwarlord decided to pick an 'old' PRC classic as source.
No Bonusses this time, maybe that's because there was no last round winner who was not allowed to enter. The round was a free round, so Evktalo was allowed to enter as well. Many Remixers show interest for this round and it turned out in a good number of songs.

It's time to vote. Participants are encouraged to vote, they get a free first place. No votes count twice, Evktalo's vote counts twice for PRC157, in which he has selected the source.
Please fill in all the three boxes, don't leave a box empty..

The mixing stage is over. To vote, you should do the following:
- Visit the stated ThaSauce Page (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC156) and listen to all the entries
- Scroll to the form at the bottom of the screen
- Fill in the rank of the entries from first to third.
- State a reasoning for it.

You have until NEXT Sunday, November 8th at 10:59 am ThaSauce time to vote, check my signature in the first post or the ThaSauce page for the exact time you have.

The winner will get to choose the source tune for PRC158 which starts Friday over two weeks. The winner from PRC157 also gets the right to select a source for that round.

The songs:
Liquidwind - Sunrise over Mardia (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/liquidwind_-_sunrise_over_mardia(PRC156).mp3)
Binweasel - Trust Your Instincts (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/Binweasel_-_Trust_Your_Instincts(PRC156).mp3)

It's results time.
The last round from the sixth year is completely over now. With nine songs and seven voters. It was a good end of the year.

Total number of mixes - 9
Total number of votes - 7

Maximum Score - 24
Minimum Score - 3 (without voting)

Note: All Remixers except Level99 received a 3 points bonus for remixing a song which didn't have any OC Remixes.

Evktalo received one scored point, but he still gets the last place wooden spoon with 4 points.

Binweasel received two points, only enough to claim eight place with 5 points.

Setokaibarocket received 3 points, but didn't vote, Bundeslang and Chickenwarlord didn't receive any points, but they voted themselve up to fifth place, six points.

Just64helpin and Liquidwind received many points and created a gap from 5 points with the #5, the 11 points are enough to claim third place.

Level99 didn't need to do an OCR song, his 14 points are enough to claim second place.

And the winner of PRC156 Anniversary Edition is Diotrans with 18 points!

Congratulations Diotrans, your song received the most points. Level99 ended second with four points difference. Just64helpin and Liquidwind claimed the third place. These four scored almost all points, only Setokaibarocket, Binweasel and Evktalo took points away.

Diotrans, you may select the source for PRC158. Send your source to me (with a MID/MP3 file if you can) by PM (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=8264) before next Friday, November 14th at 11:59 am Eastern US Time. PRC158 will start on Friday 21 November.
The winner of PRC157 may select a source as well.

You may select any source from any game, as long as it doesn't have an Overclocked Remix and it hasn't been on PRC before. Check it at the list:

PRC157 has already started: check it out at http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26236.

Aww sucks, I missed the voting deadline. Great round in any case! Thanks for all the feedback too! I thought it was all spot-on, both complimentary and critical. :)

[snip getting too many points comment after reading the scoring rules about this round, whoops]

edit#2: And congrats Diotrans! A well-deserved win. Have fun picking the song! :)

<s>It looks like I got too many points - I count only one 3rd place vote, and I didn't vote, so I should only get one point.</s> oops, nevermind..

Note: All Remixers except Level99 received a 3 points bonus for remixing a song which didn't have any OC Remixes.

EDIT: haha, never mind.

comments on mah comments

people who thought my song was too dissonant they should hear my more avant garde stuff <_< the slightly off key B melody was present in the source though, maybe some people would've taken it out but I liked it too much

the "harmonicaish" sample is a really bad bagpipe sample that is also highpassed a bit, I thought at this point it sounded more like a harmonica too

speaking of which I also didn't understand the "not that close to the source" comment, I basically didn't change anything, same progressions, slightly different timing of notes, added something to the B melody and drums and stuff, but if anything I expected someone to be like "this be the same thing as the original!"...I guess it's better that it's thought of as different though :)

stevo: you could still do that ;) I'm going to revise it a bit anyway, I agree with what you said about the drums, this(as well as my last few OHC's) was part of my experiment in trying to use FL like everyone else and break everything down into patterns/clips, as well as being slower for me otherwise it encourages bad repetition like that when it's so much more work to do even something simple like edit velocities on a repeating part, back to one pattern now, thanks for the great review :D

grats to dio for winning, stevo for second too, sorry I didn't vote I had a few ties I never worked out so I didn't have a very clear top 3

Yay thanks for all the comments and kind words ^_^ I def had a lot of fun with this and I thought the entries were all really great. I will have to participate in more PRCs in the future!

I'll try to pick something good for the next (next next?) round, actually I already have an idea of what source I want to pick and I hope everyone will have fun with it. Bundeslang I will send you a link soon.

Yeah, this was fun, I'm glad the proposed invasion took hold very well, and would like to apologize if we invaded your territory even though you had warning :-o

But seriously, this was great. Thanks to everyone who voted or participated, I can't believe I got second place. And wouldn't you know it, the next PRC is a source that I just can't turn down so...way to get me hooked, guys.

Thank you as well for the kind words and reviews, as I've decided to put my PRC entry to good use and request that it take a spot on Bahamut's project tentatively called "the light and the darkness". Congrats to Diotrans for winning, it was well-deserved, and for jh and liquid tying for 3rd, and the rest of y'all. Keep on rocking.

Congratulations diotrans, and well done everyone for a really nice round =p Unfortunately I was offline over the voting stage, but things in the top 3 turned out pretty much as I'd have voted.
Happy anniversary PRC, and here's to bundeslang for the smooth management over the past season =p
