OCR04853 - Golden Sun "That Night, 40 Years Ago"

The vibe of this was sort of half way between Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and Pink Floyd's "Animals" (any track, just pick one). Really enjoyed it. -

Loved it. Loved how the original melody came back in kind of a creepy way to wrap up the remix. - Today

DeepRanger.mp3 After some deliberation and working through things Im 100% sure this is leaning more towards a ranger song than a bard song. Not very adventurous but i think the idea could be suitable. Plus im really early into it so there is plenty of uhh adventure to be had. Really rough in places right now but im mostly just trying to write at the moment. One thing Im thinking of adding is a final section that is reminiscent of FFVII battle editions of overworld tracks. Kinda like the temple of ancients vibe in part 2 of the remake. Anyway, source below Gonna update this thread until the 30th when I come up with new progress

Mario Kart 64 Winner 2025-06-17 2248.mp3 You guys motivated me to update... Not very polished but here's a rough arrangement. Fleshed it out adding the "secret ending" bit for the second chorus, and an all new straight ahead groove that I want to flesh out the solos to more. A little reminiscent of Luigi's Raceway...

Thanks for the input to both. I am actually making this in 11/4. Use the ride cymbal in introduction (right ear) as a metronome marker. You might notice when you do this, it sounds like the off beat once we reach beat 6. This is because on beat 6, the kick drum (and bass following it) becomes the off beat, syncopating the side chain effect until the top of the next measure. This occurs on every measure. So the original rhythm is intact, but when you count it this way, you get interesting syncopation, or off beats... it's all an illusion! But anyways, I will take the sound design and eight note rhythms into consideration. I do believe the kick and bass pattern (and obviously the time signature) is the main culprit for it straying from the traditional synthwave feel. Let me play with it, and most importantly complete the arrangement, and we will see how it sounds then. I appreciate the input.😁 EDIT: and the chords during the melody section follow the syncopation, because I have them bouncing onto the beats that the kick and bass are playing. Maybe I should try placing them on the on beats and see how it sounds... as it stands though it's an even 11 chords through beat 5, and another 11 through beat 11, so it is currently even in the measure, just syncopated because it's an odd measure... interesting dilemma, especially to Steele's point because synthwave isn't typically syncopated like this.

hey. i actually lost all my music backup in 2016, and never recovered a sizable portion of it because the sites were offline by then. i tried with wayback machine and douli's site, and could only recover 3 lost tunes. wondering, is there still someone from the old days that stashed it all? i wrote douli a msg just now, but he hasn't been on the site for a while. i'd be so happy if more of that old stuff popped up somewhere. one can hope :D take care you guys! <3

Super cool track! There are long, confident stretches of fairly minimal arranging which was quite impressive to me. There's absolutely no note here that isn't needed. Reading the judgement thread I have to say I also enjoyed the sudden transitions, and thought that those were as important to the musical effect as the fairly sparse arrangement. This is a stark track in more ways than one. -
Great song! I really enjoyed and appreciated the duet. I'm not familiar with the original. I did think the song was overcompressed at least to my tastes/ears (the open hihat felt like it "pumped" the mix throughout). But otherwise it was just a solid song and it was fun to hear a really successful vocal duet on OCReMix!

Always love to hear FTL ReMixes. Extremely nice, lush sonic palette. The piece has a nice pace. Now I'm imagining FTL's story as a religious crusade 😳 -
I've heard about this "Undertale" game. It apparently has some good music that's great for _fun and creative ReMixes_ - well done! edit: Maybe I should comment on the Super Mario RPG track usage, I just recently played the Switch remaster. 🤦♂️ I didn't really listen to the soundtrack outside of the game. So ... I can say, I thought the sources are very well blended together!

1. I like the different feel that you're going for. Makes it seems pretty different and original sounding. What distracts me a bit is how it sounds a little muddy. The song is already in a complex 11/8 which is already quite strange but what I noticed about the original is has really obvious chords that play on the first beat of the bar. This really holds it together in my opinion so maybe trying something similar to that might help give it clarity, unless you're wanting to make it quite ambiguous where the beat starts and ends. 2. If you're going for a synthwave sound, feel free to disagree with me here. My understand of the core aspects of synthwave come from the kinds of sounds used (80's or 80's inspired, which you already have some in there) but also, most synthwave songs usually have a drone bass playing, it often sounds really model and just keeps playing, usually semiquavers (8th notes). That being said, you don't need to actually include this, but if you want to sound synthwave, that's a really fast way to give it that sound. Now that might not work too well with it being 11/8, I'm not too sure but right now because of the pulsing feel. It feels almost like Synthetic Djent. Which I like the idea of but Djent is quite punchy and powerful, synthwave is more mellow and constant usually. It feels somewhere in the middle and that's not bad, maybe it needs to be worked on a bit more. You could be onto something quite original sounding 3. I agree with @bluelighter That it is a little short. Maybe consider adding a new section into the piece that has a different feel. Hell if you're feeling crazy, the idea of a synthwave version of this with singing involved and a piano solo like you've already got might slap really hard but I'm getting carried away. Another section you could consider is a really slow ethereal break where it's mostly slow pads and ambient. Here is the singing example I was reminded of. Love what you have so far. I'm just some rando so take or leave the advice. Good luck with developing the idea further :)

*NO* Super R-Type "The Bydo Must Fall!"
Liontamer replied to prophetik music's topic in Judges Decisions
Thank you for laying out the source tune order, Gregorio. Been a fan of this OST since hearing Beatdrop's ReMix of the first stage! Right from the intro, it has an intense sound, though it feels like the soundscape's lossy and crowded; what I'm mainly hearing is the countermelodic backing parts and then the lead synth's upfront, albeit quiet. The drums are great when I concentrate on hearing them. Not ideal mixing when the guitar chugs are drowning a lot of other parts out, but I can make out stuff enough where I feel it gets by. Nice transition at 1:42. When lots of elements dropped out and the texture was emptier from 1:42-1:57 as a contrast, things didn't sound cramped. I haven't read the other votes yet, but I hope I'm not the only one pointing this out. At 2:24, the transition was sudden but seemed to flow smoothly from the previous theme. The melodic synth was a lot louder and more upfront as the lead, which made me wonder why the balance of parts felt so off in the opening verse for the stage 1 theme. 3:09's theme change basically had no transition, which was disappointing. Another sudden theme change at 3:52 and the medley-itis charges feel more and more valid as this moves along. There was at least a quick transition at 4:37, but very minimal and still a big break in the flow. Whatever those snap sounds were from 4:37-4:51 were too loud yet lossy-sounding, just really coming through too loudly in my headphones. The mixing isn't ideal and does meaningfully ding it -- it's arguably causing ear fatigue from just making this so loud yet cramped most of the time -- but I'd still pass an otherwise-cohesive arrangement mixed like this. It already got invoked before, but I'll quote the Submission Standards again: Here's how I felt about the transitions: 0:00-1:42 - "Solo Sortie" smooth transition 1:43-2:23 - "Counterattack '91" smooth transition 2:24-3:08 - "As Wet As a Fish" abrupt transition 3:09-3:52 - "A Submerging Titan" abrupt transition 3:53-4:37 - "Dream of a Labyrinth" abrupt transition 4:38-5:54 - "Return of the Creature" smooth transition 5:55-6:12 - "To the Next Zone" In other words, 3 smooth theme changes, 3 abrupt ones. We don't require 6 smooth, developed theme changes for a pass. I'm just summarizing how a fair amount of the track felt like a basic medley structure without enough flow in the theme changes to make the overall composition feel cohesive enough. Indeed, this is a well-performed and sequenced rock adaptation of several Super R-Type themes, but it's not presented as a cohesive & uniform enough musical concept where it doesn't primarily feel like 7 (amazingly amped up) covers stitched together without enough flow from theme to theme. I definitely appreciate you submitting this, Gregorio, with this intensity and great soundtrack choice. I'm a NO for this fitting our arrangement Standards as is; if there was openness to fleshing out the transitions between themes, I'd love to hear this resubmitted. It'll sound like we don't want any medleys, when in fact we've got a ton of medleys on OCR, but there's more intention to making the overall track feel like one cohesive, developing, evolving idea rather than jumping quickly from theme to theme. Whether it's with this piece again or another arrangement, I hope you'll keep submitting more of what you're creating, you definitely have a spot waiting. :-) NO (resubmit) -

wait....there was a caustic version of this?! from ......2012...?!?! link? i wanna hear that. caustic was cool, but such terrible sequencing!! on that note, is there an ocremix by now that's all done with a better mobile seq, like korg gadget etc? anyway, the posted mix is pretty much like the WIP i listened to. it's super solid, and not boring at all. it's a radio smasher. hehe. the stuff in the middle is really good.

All these years later, this mix is still so awesome I logged in just to say it. -
Also - I would want live guitars and live harp - so probably a collab with people.

I plan to make the bass move a little more so it matches the original bass - obviously have a real intro and kind of follow this whole sneaky style
