  1. I feel like pingning @Chernabogue and @Rexy in honour of certain Sega Mixer Drive shenanigans.

  2. This certainly isn't the final layout, this is just initial exposure to the data. While the data is under review, it kinda helps to have it all easily viewable, even if certain terms overlap. Eventually, we want to prioritize & colorize the genre terms first, and then probably mood... there are usually only 2-3 each, of those... and then instrumentation & additional tags would probably be revealed with a "more" button, yes...

  3. Yeah, mixing and mastering your song would be no problem if that's what you want. My only thought from what you said, is if you're sending a sample that includes parts you don't have access to (such as other band members playing live drums or something) it might be better to only include instruments / sounds you have access to as it would best represent what you are capable of making. Unless you think you could work with your band to make the remix, then that'd be cool. Good luck with your resub too!

  4. Fantastic, thanks for the swift response! I'll drop you a PM when I get back from the office- will probably include one of the songs I recorded with my band which isn't a videogame remix but shows what I can do re: writing and playing parts. I'm more than happy to just provide an arrangement and stems and let somebody else take care of the mixing/mastering since I'm much more confident in my writing skills than my overall mixing/mastering prowess! Also dropped Chimpazilla a PM, cheers

  5. @Manji That does sound like too long for a resub. Send me a PM with the relevant information so I can look into that.

  6. I would very much like to get involved in this (I have my eye on the song "SeeD" which nobody appears to have claimed yet) but I don't have any posted mixes on OCR - I've got a resubmission in the Judges' Queue at the moment but it's been there for the better part of a year. How would I go about submitting an audition and what should it contain? Apologies if this should be common knowledge, I've not gotten involved in any projects before! Thanks for your patience

  7. I'm curious, how're you missing a half of a trumpet? I really enjoy the arrangement. While it's not something I've written for, I remember liking the big bands at my local jazz festival years ago, and this brings back fond memories of those festivals. I really enjoy the combination of samba and big band, and it really does lend itself well for the source track. As I posted on Soundcloud, I love the buildup together with the percussion line. I was waiting for there to be more of an "oomph" right before the percussion dropped out, but I still like it. As for recording, are you planning on a studio/studio-esque recording, or more of a live recording? If it's the former, the book, Modern Music Recording by David Miles Huber and Robert E. Runstein may be helpful, especially for understanding recording placement. For brass, they recommend placing mics slightly off-center and a foot away from the bell, and trombones can often share a mic between two players, again a foot away and slightly off to the side to avoid picking up wind. If it is live, you might be able to get a hold of The Runaway Five, who arranged "Big-Band Battlefield", and see what they have to say, as their work was evaluated and passed by the judges. Again, I really enjoyed this arrangement of Angel Island, and while I didn't grow up with old-school Sonic like other members here, I'm glad you reminded me of the good times of going to the jazz festival with my family. Thanks for sharing!

    My stuff sounds muddy

Don't forget the important of a good set of monitors or cans (though preferably monitors) for mixing. You want a good transparent set that you've spent many hours on and can trust. I found this to be the #1 thing that improved my mixes.

  9. Just spoke with ectogemia, unfortunately he's no longer interested in the Alundra remix, so if we can remove him from the tracklist that would be great.

  10. The WIPs I've been receiving are going to make for a very eclectic and interesting album. The takes that all the remixers have done so far are works of genius, even in their 'concept' stages. Some genres being used for the claimed remixes include: Classical Metal Psy-Trance Techno B-Movie Bladerunner (yup) Colour me excited

  11. ^THIS^ Also, I learned how to make music here on this site. All my motivation and a lot of what I've learned and certainly all of my music friends and contacts came from here. Recommend 10/10, would OCR again.

  12. Is it possible that VGM is cyclic in nature, perhaps it's strongest asset is not conducive to what others would listen for in a stand alone song? I listen for the blend of the game with the music, If I was interested in only stand alone music to remix ( or just produce), I wouldn't be here. I love the synthesis of two feelings, musical satisfaction and nostalgia, both have requirements that need to be fulfilled, sometimes at the cost of the other, but that's the balancing game we play, isn't it?

  13. I really don't buy that this is an accident and even if it was, I have doubts the composer wouldn't catch themselves. "When Worlds Collide" is among the most popular nu-metal/industrial rock tunes from the 90s. It still pops up in movies, games, commercials, radio etc. all the time. I mean, the vocal style, melody, rhythm and even the backing power chords in that FFXIV track sound almost completely the same. I'm normally not one to agree with most of these kinds of claims, but I'd bet that if Powerman5000 wanted to, they could probably convince a court without much effort that it's a rip-off. While it's true that there's only so much you can do and patterns happen in genres, part of being a composer is being familiar with a wide variety of music and being able to tell if your piece is a little too close for comfort to something you're inspired by. I recently scrapped one of my tracks because I realized that it sounded like something I'd heard before, but I couldn't remember exactly what. When I shared it, people pointed out how very similar it was to "Rapid Fire" by Blue Stahli, which is a track I actually knew how to play. Then, I face-palmed hard, laughed, and got rid of it. I get the feeling this composer may have skipped that final step.
