  1. You look like.... every boss?!?! Resubmitting mine right now
  2. AAAAAH I'm crapping as fast as I can! I just got home, and there's only an hour left to touch up my entry!! =O
  3. Submitted! I'm quite pleased... though I might touch it up a bit and resub before the deadline. Needless to say, I'm freaking excited about seeing all the other entries.
  4. Yep, midnight. If you're in the Eastern timezone. Atma, I just PMed you my WIP, and I'm ready to start colouring it..... on a scale of 1 to 9000, how hard do I have to try have a fighting chance?
  5. Looks like it's going to be a close one for me again... what time of day is the deadline?
  6. Revised list: Metroid: Zero Mission F-Zero: Maximum Velocity Hmm, actually, some days I'd play it for a long time, but end up NOT beating it, or just losing over and over again and not advancing one bit... I like my games difficult like that. But when the game is that fun, the player ALWAYS wins! or something... I was also hooked on Resident Evil 4's "mercenaries" bonus game for a period of time... Also: fun with punctuation!!
  7. If anyone's still hung up on the "tempo vs pitch" thing... just remember that the human ear can't pick up frequencies lower than around 20Hz. 20Hz * 60sec/min = 1200bpm It would be silly to say that music with a tempo less than 1200 bpm is inaudible... hope this clears things up more than it confuses everyone =P I'm sure it's quite possible someone's told you this before (maybe you're even tired of hearing it??), but: Have you ever tried making an animation or other visual art work that sounds good or at least slightly music-ish to you? Seems like it would make a really great concept piece, if there's an explanation attached.
  8. A sequel, eh? I suggest reading this: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3321687/1/The_Metroid_Conspiracy_Pasts_of_the_Sin
  9. Star Fox 64? Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to sit this one out... Does Metroid: Zero Mission count? It must have taken me at least 15 tries to get all 8 or so endings. And I must have beaten it at least another 10 times since then. Best boss fights I've ever played - I could fail at the same boss 30 times in a row, and not be the slightest bit bored. That game was really made to be played to death over and over again (not unlike Star Fox 64); it's heavily geared towards speed runs / low item runs / 100% item speed runs / are you crazy, you can't beat the game without THAT item!!? runs. And it's no coincidence I chose to put the M:ZM Mother Brain in my sig... Also, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity. Insanely fun once you teach yourself how to play - those harder skill levels are intense, and each of the vehicles plays like an entirely different game. The tracks offer an amazing amount of variety too - definitely my favourite F-Zero game (and I'm pretty sure I've played them all). I kind of played it to death a while back (you know, beating every cup with every pilot on every skill level), but haven't touched it for a while... if I felt like getting back into gaming, I'd probably pick this one up again. I'm pretty sure I've praised these two games before in a "handhelds" or "GBA" thread here. If you need hand-held games that will keep you entertained and challenged for a long time, get these. I'd say "Metroid Prime" as well, but that lost all appeal for me after I beat the "no energy tanks and no missile expansions" run [/bragging] No, but seriously, try it. Highly recommended. [Edit] And my "when I was a kid" list: Megaman 1, 3, and 4 Startropics Super Mario Bros 1, 2, and 3 Dr. Mario
  10. Hehe, nah, it's just my brain being too tired to process 15 "frames" a second. Strangely though, the game doesn't seem to go by faster, as this tempo phenomenon might suggest - it just makes me suck at playing it. Certainly there is some validity to the idea of perceived tempo change - we've all heard of people having moments where where a couple of second "feels like ages"... but that could be something entirely different altogether, unless it's "playing those tricky couple seconds of the guitar solo felt like ages", or something.... arg, it must be ramble o' clock, I'm outta here ><
  11. Gollgagh knows what he's talking about. Also, I have noticed tempo differences before, but I've never correlated it with anything like body temperature or time of day... [Edit] Not related to music, but: I'm currently working on a little game that has a low low framerate of 15 frames per second, so you can imagine it looks kind of choppy. A few times I've played it while I was overly tired, and the animation looked completely smooth!
  12. ... Cloud Man? I'll be highly impressed if anyone can make a really evil looking Cloud Man...
  13. Even more awesome than the background in your sig? HOLY &%@$ it's that guy!!
  14. WIPs have been posted in the past... it's all up to the poster, really. Keep in mind though that some people like surprises =p Half way to go for me; I've found reference pictures and have nearly printed them! Hopefully I'll start some drawing today...
  15. If it gives me an opportunity to say "Zinc!! Come back zinc! Come back!!" then maybe I'll play that game. Anyway, this isn't a videogame, but I heard about CORPUS on the news. It's a museum shaped like a giant person, obviously with educational biology stuff and giant organs inside. http://www.eurogates.nl/en_holland_news/id/1032/
  16. Am I correct in understanding that you are asking for A CHALLEEEEEENGE!!?! ...because I'll be whipping up another one of my mediocre drawings and it might get a couple votes. If there are enough mediocre entrants like me, it might steal enough votes to give someone else a chance!
  17. I will admit that it's hard to tell what West's real intentions were. It definitely looks like the messages selected were done so to incriminate her. Diego's and West's motives were basically the same: survive. I just think West's method, combined with the image or herself she presented to the crew, so perfectly embodied "evil mastermind" villains from every kind of media there is. I suppose one could compare her to Zapp Brannigan - his intentions and methods are selfish, his "don't ask me - you're the ones who are going to be dying!" attitude is repugnant (and hilarious), and even his most well-intentioned actions are facepalm-worthy, and usually result in much death and destruction. But is he evil, or just a complete idiot? If you didn't know how much of a bumbling oaf he was, and all you ever saw of him were the wars and destruction he caused and his arrogant attitude, wouldn't he look like an evil person to you? Really, West is a lot like a tougher and more intelligent (and hotter) Zapp Brannigan. I failed to mention in my first post that I'm sure West (nor probably her sister) actually believed she was doing the wrong thing - but again, that "I know exactly what I'm doing, and it's right and just" attitude is what makes her so scary... not that that's any different from Diego, mind you. I suppose the difference is that West is alone stewing in her own insanity and you don't know WHAT she's gonna do next, while Diego is offering you a chance at survival, and you know exactly how he's going to do it. I was rooting for Diego all the way, heh =p I also failed to mention that "the system" is clearly to blame for all this - how these commanders-to-be were dragged down the competitive and ruthless path towards the goal of personal victory. I wouldn't say West is completely evil, but I will say that the situation, combined with her past, made her do evil things that appeared, to me, much worse than what Diego did. Awesome picture =P
  18. Nope. Spoilers: In the "From the Author" section, I was surprised to hear you label Diego as "main antagonist". I mean, I didn't like the guy, and his motives were selfish, but I think he was right in a lot of respects. It's not that he's "good", just that he's the lesser of two evils - West in my eyes was just plain evil. ...Did you phrase that Diego comment just so, as to invite people's rebuttals? ;P Let's face it; West is basically a human version of HAL - which makes her all the more terrifying, as you know there's probably a method to her madness. The "I cannot make a mistake" vibe really rang through, even though the select messages seemed to show that EVERY DECISION SHE MADE was the opposite of what a good commander would do. And by "good commander", I mean someone who puts her crew's lives ahead of her own pride. What is this "winning" BS? Why is she putting lives at stake for some convoluted personal victory? It's all so confusing to me... And if I may clarify a few points: some of West's choices - you know, the ones with no purpose but to annoy people, prevent them from doing their jobs, put their lives at stake, or literally sentence them to death - it seems to me that some or all of these decisions were made with the clear intent to spark a revolution. All so she could suffocate anyone who rebels, leaving only herself and those still loyal to her alive. This was her plan since she learned only 32 could survive, no? Maybe I just made all that up, but I've seen enough movies to know a thing or two about plots of evil genius. Funny how I didn't figure it out until her VERY LAST MESSAGE though ;] If that's the case, I have no idea how you can say Diego is the "main antagonist". It seems the chaos caused by the rebellion was just as much West's doing as it was Diego's. And I can certainly respect the "overthrow the corrupt commander" attitude more than the "ok guyz you gets to survive cuz I'm the commander and you stuck with me even though I'm a crazy psycho, k??". It was even ambiguous about that - did she even let her "loyalists" survive? The only happy ending was that the logs (presumably) got saved for future generations to learn from their mistakes (HA!) What really ticked me off in the beginning, as what one might call a "computer scientist", was the whole "99.6%" thing. What a complete ass! =P And I love how the guy who goes absolutely overboard threatening her is the "Counselor" One last thing - Eck, unusable scroll-bar! Goes against everything I was taught about interface design - and like most Microsoft interfaces, goes against plain 'ol common sense. If I would have used it for the whole story, it would have caused me great physical pain (I kid you not). Thank goodness for the mouse wheel =D
  19. Well I'm making progress on choosing a boss. Ahead of schedule, by my standards =D
  20. Wow that was a fast reply. We have white text tags.
  21. Tremendous achievement! Now that the threads are merged, I assume this is the official discussion thread? I have certain spoiler-heavy things to discuss...
  22. How about... the first month... the month of June....... is BOSS MONTH?? =D
  23. So does this mean he can "specifically un-add" it?? =D
  24. Hehe, I think you meant "portray" Content in Zelda games can largely be divided into two categories: stuff that's old (been done in other Zelda games, or considered "classic"), and stuff that's new (what differentiates the game from other Zelda titles). The "new" stuff ranges from bizarre and surreal environments and storylines (Majoras Mask), to new gameplay elements (Zelda 2), to a completely different game design (Ocarina of Time), to, erm, turning into a wolf and wiggling your Wii remote around (Twilight Princess). Just as each Zelda game has a slightly different flavour, a movie could tailor its new story, environment, and characters to a style that's appropriate for the big screen. Now, if making a good movie is no problem for you, the challenge of making a good ZELDA movie is that it needs all the Zelda fundamentals: Link, Ganon, Master Sword, dungeons, etc.. How does one translate dungeons into movie format? I can think of several good movies with a dungeon-like setting that the main characters explore, but cramming several dungeons into one movie (with only ONE character exploring them) could be a problem. Personally, I'd rather not watch a movie consisting mostly of the main character traveling through 3 or 4 different dungeons - that's just not the kind of movie I'd want to watch, and I really don't think it embodies Zelda. Since the Zelda storyline is so strange and mysterious, a movie that focuses on the grand scheme of things (Ganon trying to attain the triforce to rule the world, stuff involving the "sacred realm" and misc. Hyrule mythos) could potentially be insanely epic. A "coming of age" "boy becomes man" story about Link would obviously be a part of it, but you KNOW exactly how it's going to play out, so that aspect definitely shouldn't be the focus. With any hope, it would be the kind of movie where the average movie-goer would come for the action, but end up enjoying it more for the engaging story, suspense, and of course the downright scary parts. I really think directors have approached a lot of videogame movies the wrong way.... a lot of movies just end up slapping videogame-character names onto the movie characters (or in the case of the Prince of Persia movie, names that weren't even in the game!). Really, what should be done is take the stuff that's absolutely fundamental to the series (e.g. for DOOM, use the fact that the monsters are FROM HELL), and build on that. What's fundamental in the Zelda series then? Well Link, he come to town - come to save the princess Zelda. Ganon took her away, now the children don't play, but they will when Link saves the day. Hallelujah! Now Link, fill up your hearts, so you can shoot your sword with power. And when you're feeling all down, the fairy will come around, so you'll be brave, and not a sissy coward. Now Link, has saved the day - Put Ganon in his grave. So now Zelda is free, and now our hero shall be: Link! I think your name shall go down into history! So yeah if they make a movie just like that it should be good. Speaking of song lyrics and movies: http://doom.ocremix.org/main.html See how the lyrics to "Darkness Dawning" take stuff that's from the game's plot (however thin) and elaborate on it? Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Seriously, they should make a DOOM movie based on that song (or on the whole album, heh).
