  1. I swear I read "big gay dance" (without the "Brawl") when I last checked this thread - you didn't edit your post, did you?? Regardless, I support this idea. Anyway, I still haven't even narrowed down my choices.... looks like another last-minute entry for me =/
  2. I'm sure you've already thought of Super Metroid. And since I feel the need to mention this game in just about every thread about videogames: System Shock 2. There were places in that game that freaked me out just because of the music. The style was bang-on for a sci-fi/survival/spaceship/horror/whatever, and the sound design overall was phenominal. The music was remarkably in-tune with the feeling of the current area or situation, whether it was "I need to get out of this place", "holy shit this shit is awesome", or "this has to be the 100th time I've run through these corridors (panting and sweating!)... this song is practically an anthem now". I can imagine that game would have been a lot different without the music. I have no idea if this was intentional, but: Part way through the game, there is this one area with incredibly calming (yet still eerie) music. I have no idea if this was intentional, but it really forced me to think "I've been killing and for so long that it's become disturbingly... normal, for me." That's not really setting the atmosphere of the current setting per se, but more the atmosphere of the entire story/experience. Also, I absolutely loved how, in many areas, waiting or hiding would make the song gradually end. Then you could hear evey little noise (and there were a LOT), until the game felt there was enough energy to start some upbeat music again. Now that I think about this though, I'm probably not helping very much; unless you've played the game, it's going to be hard to take what I just said and successfully convey it to another audience =p
  3. I know... but you posting "Wario Land 2" is what reminded me of Mario Land 2. My poast was already bloated enough; I felt it didn't need an explanation Unfortunately I haven't played Wario Land II =(
  4. The thing is: 1) I take some ridiculous courses 2) My art skils are such that I can do great things if I have either a ton of time, or a good reference photo (or other such thing in front of me). Unfortunately, the videogame themed nature of contest makes it difficult for me to choose something for which a reference photo exists - so far I've only done one entry this way, and the rest are more or less cartoons. Cartoons IS the area where I need to improve (and tend to be more fun and challenging for me to draw), so that's why I keep drawing them. Given the right theme, I could do some serious blowing-out-of-the-water with some realistic pencil or pastel work. But what's the fun in that?? 3) If I don't have a reference, I can still draw good stuff given a lot of time - but this contest has only a one-month deadline. And if I go straight into the final drawing (without a ton of drafts and practice sketches first) it most always turns out as garbage. I totally admire artists that can just draw an idea from their head on the first try - I really wish I could do that. So every contest I use as an opportunity to practice, but maybe just not as much as I'd like to. And maybe if I didn't post here so much, I'd haOMG ULTIMATE POWER!!!!!
  5. Hooboy there are so many great possibilities for this one, I don't even care what I choose. I may follow up on the Biggoron Sword request. In the meantime, here's the fastest image edit I've ever done:
  6. Mario Land 2 and Super Mario World are leitmotif incarnate. While Mario Land 2 maybe went a bit overboard, it was certainly a tremendous acheivement. But Super Mario World perfected it. I also thought Donkey Kong 64's handling of motifs was pretty cool. The overworld map had the same melody throughout, but always changed depending on which part of the world you were on (just like Diddy Kong Racing 64's overworld). Then each level would have its own new melody, and the song would change drastically in different parts of the level. Heck, I think the boss themes even had the same melody as the level. Am- am I just describing exactly what they did in Banjo-Kazooie? Also I've been meaning to point out these things here for a while, but never got around to it: 1) The title screen in Ocarina of Time has the melody of the "warp whistle" theme from the first Zelda and Super Mario Bros 3. But you probably already knew that. 2) You know that small town in Twilight Princess with the guy who sells bombs? I can't remember the name of the town, but it's at the right edge of this map: [Edit: THIS MAP HAS SPOILERS!!!] http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/grandnoble/crap/107_map-overworld-goronmines.jpg (The map's from the GameCube version, so East and West are reversed; confused the heck out of me!) [Fake Edit] It's Kakariko Villiage, duh! Anyway, the town's theme starts off with a couple bars from the recognizable Kakariko Villiage theme from past Zelda games - but then, to me at least, the rest sounds like a liberal rearrangement of the Dark World theme from Link to the Past. Am I crazy? Also, what about this song stuff I'm rambling on about? (You might not start to hear the resemblance until 0:54) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXVgnAs0rqQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoDGGir1HP0 (both good songs by the way) One thing I don't get though: Twilight Princess did a great job of sticking together several songs with one melody in the Hyrule Market. They also had the whole "the main theme is in every friken song" thing going on, which worked pretty nicely. But their implementation of the battle music was simply horrid! I won't even start about how the enemies were easy as shit, but every time you so much as walked by one, some unfitting battle song would suddenly start up out of nowhere. And it's the SAME SONG for everywhere in the whole game (except maybe there was a second one for Hyrule Field). And it wasn't even a good song! This was excusable in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but then they do it again (badly) in Windwaker, and again (even more badly) in Twilight Princess.... get with the times, Nintendo!! IMO music programming in the vast majority of games is severely lacking. Same with the stiff robotic crowd in every Smash Bros. iteration, what the hell?? We need to look back at games that did dynamic music right *coughSystemShock2cough* [/rant] [Edit] Goldeneye was a James Bond game made by Rare for the N64 - I wonder if it had multiple songs with the same motif anywhere in it?? Nah, probably not.
  7. Unfortunately, "strive to improve" is in direct conflict with "get good grades", and to a lesser extent, "[verb] with [plural noun]".
  8. Can't wait to see the new theme! "Bozo"........ is it "clowns" or "circus"?? Also I'm not sure I like the new format of not seeing how many votes everyone got - it makes it hard to know if you need improvement or not. Also makes me feel better to see that I actually got 1 or 2 votes (Although this time I probably got zero )
  9. It's like you made your signature solely so it would fit with that post.
  10. This is another one of those threads that grows too fast for me to read, because it's about people listing games from their childhood. On that note: WOO TYRIAN!! But even moreso: StarTropics and Super Mario Bros 2. I excluded SMB1 and 3 because I try not to go for too many decades without playing them. Yes, one decade is too many. You can add Megaman 1 through 4 to this list as well. And I keep forgetting, is SMB2 the game that everybody thinks is too easy, or that everybody thinks is too hard? For me it's just the game that's AWESOME. Ohwait I have a StarTropics cartridge less than 3 feet away from me as I type, along with a working NES... Must.... not.... drop....... university!!
  11. It's kind of frightening that I know exactly what you're talking about without ever played that game (heck, I don't even know what game he's from!) (Well, not really; I have played Harmony of Dissonance...) Flying or not, that guy has some durable leg bones. And durable ceilings to match. THHWUNK!
  12. I was about to say... But there was once a videogame character that I thought was much more like me, but now I can't remember who it was... and now that I think about it, maybe it was even a character in a book or movie, heh... "as"??? I must see this movie.
  13. What the F! Great entries everyone!! And [spoilers]not a single Luigi??!! Why the heck did I put this in spoiler tags??!?!?!?[/spoilers]
  14. No problem; just wait for a sudden increase of confidence. =O OOOOH YEAH! Me too! Except I already finished it yesterday. This time I was considering faking an MS-Paint entry by using the pencil tool in Photoshop, but I figured that would be too difficult. I have to say this is probably my strangest entry yet (but not for that reason). ... we still email them to Bleck, right? I'm sending mine right now...
  15. I thought the infinite shots on the screen was a nice feature, but I didn't realize you could shoot as fast as wanted! Sounds game-breaking. Definitely not a big. But on the topic of bugs: with the vsync option turned on, the game would slow down to a crawl whenever the screen scrolls in certain rooms.
  16. I already know what I'm doing for mine... it might not be very creative, but it's definitely "and stuff". And maybe even Luigi.
  17. I actually thought it was a pretty good list. Except that every song on there wasn't from the Neverhood soundtrack. And Jet Force Gemini.
  18. I still don't see how this is so vastly different than Broodwars or Frozen Throne... the differences that matter to me are all positive (e.g. more intimate look into each race, unique gameplay elements for each). Is that just because I don't have time to play all bajillion missions in one year, or because I'm mostly looking forward to the map editor (which will most likely improve with each expansion)?? Naw, I'm probably just insane I'LL TAKE EIGHT!!!
  19. Yeah, I guess they did kind of introduce you to each unit and tell you their strengths and tactics... Well, then I'm sure either Blizzard will make some tutorial maps for the other races, or eager SC2 players themselves will make tutorial maps for the masses. All I know is the Warcraft III campaigns didn't teach me shit (or DID, depending on how you look at it). The multiplayer game differed vastly from the singleplayer, and not just because of all the patches...
  20. At the rate this thread is growing, I don't have time to read the whole thing, but to me it looks like the same idea as the Broodwar expansion, except: - The campaign in the first release is Terran only. - There will be two expansions instead of just one. - Each campaign will be very unique. - Multiplayer ships complete with each campaign. Is... is this a problem?? I definitely see what you mean, but you can still teach yourself the other races by playing multiplayer maps against computer players =)
  21. Well, Cossack #2 is one of my favourite NES songs of all time... and personally, I don't think MM2's Wily 1 song is THAT good (especially when you look at all the other amazing songs in MM2 and MM3). Cossack wins hands down IMO The MM4 final level and final boss songs are also pretty killer, despite the fact that the boss tune is about a 12 seconds long. But that had nothing to do about MM9, did it...... Personally, I didn't like the style of the MM5 and 6 soundtrack very much, and I think MM9 has a very similar style to 5 and 6, and there are only a couple tunes that I really like. I think 2 and 3 are about on par, then there's 4, then 1, then 9, and then 5 and 6. But that's just me... Mind you I grew up with 3, 4, and 1 (but not 2 =O), so the nostalgia factor maybe bumped those games a little higher [Edit] Hehe, I think comparing MM2's Wily 1 and MM4's Skull Man is like comparing two different styles of rock =P
  22. Levels now? I thought it was just a boss fight...?
  23. Hmmmm.... draw Poochy between them? [Edit] (I don't know who Isun is though, I forgot to ask)
  24. Awwwww Sad to see you go... Now I'm tempted to draw Dead Hand again... He's the sidekick of... ummm.... Crap-Your-Pants Man! Navi is also a viable sidekick option.
  25. 2-way tie for fourth... It's the best I've done in... MONTHS! =D And that's the first 5-way tie for sixth we've seen in... at least a month! Anyway, congrats! I thought Terra's somewhat imp-like appearance was pretty cool (and naturally you got my #1 vote ) Is it too early to start listing sidekicks in this thread? If we don't start brainstorming soon, we'll end up with 12 pics of Luigi and Yoshi... and Geno. ...Not that there's anything wrong with that ....Can we do villains' sidekicks as well?
