  1. I think your orchestration is very nice, it's the samples/mixing that is letting the piece down. Not sure if you can get a better mix out of what you have, or potentially try different sounds. Also, the cymbal/swells/tinkly chimes are too loud for my taste. Keep it up!
  2. Recognize the Slate drums, but they sound weak in this context. Would like to hear a louder kick, with more click. Try some parallel compression on the drum bus to beef up the kit as well.
  3. A certain Danny Elfman sounding track left me completely gobsmacked.
  4. Why is the lead vocal stereo widened? I don't know why people do that. Ditch the widener and add some more compression. Vox also seem quite pitchy in areas.
  5. You people are rationalizing too much. It's fun to buy new gear, and it's healthier than a crack addition. So go support the economy.
  6. Yeah I'm definitely hearing a lot of pumping on the mix, which I don't like at the best of times but is completely out of place in orchestral music. Ease up on your bus compressor, or preferably get rid of it.
  7. Sounds kind of dreadful. I'm glad I just do this for a hobby.
  8. Something is definitely broken. If you can replace the cord, do that. Otherwise, time for a new pair of cans. Unless you know someone who can repair em.
  9. Yes. Better virtual instruments can definitely help. Quality samples are easier to mix. Whether or not you indulge in them depends how much money you want to throw into the bottomless pit of music production. If you have the money and a sweet tooth, go for it.
  10. Sad that no one wants to join. I would, but I am slammed with too many project as it is. I haven't even had a chance to work on non-project mixes in months. I'm thinking late summer or fall I'll have everything done.
  11. I'm a big fan of parallel compression. it generally makes a drum kit sound better all around. I tend not to EQ sampled snares much, other than a lower rolloff. It's best to get the right sound at the source, rather than have to do bunch of fancy processing.
  12. I am enjoying the back and forth. I've found it interesting and informative so far.
  13. the problem as I see it, is that there is a lot more supply of music than demand for it. so it's a buyers market for game developers, and aspiring game composers don't have a whole lot of options available to them. add to that that we're in the age of music piracy, where people don't even want to spend 99 cents on a song. it's a tough row to hoe.
  14. Uh, isn't that the market in action? Unless you're proposing that home musicians unionize.
  15. Do people prefer keyswitches, or separate tracks? Up until now I've been on the side of keyswitching, though it's kind of getting on my tits lately.
  16. I've been tweaking my template for awhile now, it's pretty good though I still need to balance the volume for everything. Certain libraries seem to be louder than others. Reaper has very flexible track routing. It's a snap to route MIDI from one track to multiple other tracks. I'm thinking this might be useful to set up impromptu sections for unison playing. Then you have the choice of triggering instruments separately, or play one of the group tracks. IDK, maybe it's just a novelty idea with little value.
  17. I would volunteer, but there is no earthly way I can have a mix ready by Sunday.
  18. Maybe this? It's pretty short, though, and not all of it is 4 on the floor.
