  1. I don't remember it being in a writeup last year. Meanwhile... 25 with 6 reviews(whoo!)! 61 with 7 66 with 8 108 with 9 Great progress! EDIT: K.B.'s right, 61, not 71 of the 7 reviews.
  2. Even with the subtle variations, this mix is too repetative. A change of the chords and some bigger moves on the melody would make a world of difference. The sounds used here are appropriate, and cute. They work well to bring up a 'turtle in sewers' image to my head (I am unfamiliar with the source, so this will have to do). Overall, I start spacing out after a while, but the mix is cute and fun.
  3. Love the bassline throughout. It really drives the mix, no pun intended Good choice of synths, everything meshes well. Would have liked more done with the drums, they are the weakest part of the mix. Agree with Dshu, more eggshaker! Key change also works surprisingly well, even if it is sudden. Nice work, and welcome aboard.
  4. Update: 1 mix with 4 reveiws. 37 with 6 51 with 7 70 with 8 107 with 9 That's pretty awesome progress, even though it doesn't look like it. It would be awesome to finish off the 6 review mixes this year.
  5. Supah-funky. This mix rocks, and I agree with all reviews above. Awesome.
  6. Drumwork is pretty good here, and the track is catchy. Personally I don't get the "F-Zero" feel that DJP claims, but that's just me. Feels more like a battle theme, but I don't know the source, so that's a guess. The intonation on the guitar only really sticks out when it's harmonized by the synth. Then those out of tune notes stick out. Playing is good though, nice solo. Overall a pretty solid first submission.
  7. This is one weird mix. Unfortunately, that's not a good weird. It starts out military with 'war guitars', then goes into an upbeat drum beat, with a kinda weird melodic line that repeats, then combines the two. Very disjointed, and no overall purpose. I'm not crazy about any of the sounds either. Can't say they've aged well. Sorry, this isn't for me.
  8. Jimmy did a nice job on this one. Bassline at the beginning is pretty sweet. Nice use of tubular bells, also. I'm not sure if I'm feeling the fast section and transition. It works, but it feels a bit unnessecary to me. Overall, good job.
  9. The melody is catchy. I don't know the source, but I trust OA that it's apparently not changed much from the original. I can see a lot of places Beatdrop could have gone with the melody, so it's somewhat of a shame that he didn't vary things up too much. Overall, there isn't any big risks as DJP said, and therefore nothing really stands out. It sounds pretty run of the mill. Still enjoyable, just nothing big.
  10. Trancey indeed. The downward arpeggio thing at the beginning is cool, but a bit too long for me. That's somewhat a characteristic of the genre, so I can't fault, but it's too much for my liking. The melody reminds me of Top Gun. I have no idea why. Very 80's, and a lot of fun. We go back to the arpeggiated thing again, and it continues as before. Same comment as above, though if I focus more on the bass line it's not as bad. It's a fun track, but I'm not overly crazy about it.
  11. Wow, I can't believe this is only mix 184. The sounds on this are GREAT. I've always loved YI, and this mix is totally awesome. Perfect style adaption. Everything works wonderfully. The percussion is great, the bass line is kickin', and the sitar/flute combo on the melody works very well. Not much more I can say on this. Recommended.
  12. I never really noticed the panning on this mix until now, and it adds a nice touch at first but, does the song pan back and forth for the entire time, or is that just me? Gets annoying after a while. The percussion is nice. The hand drums, snare (not entirely crazy about the snare sound, but it's decent), and timpani work nicely together. Changing around from one to another and mixing them keep the piece interesting. Melody is nicely done, though the main line is left pretty straightforward. Little details here and there, like the pause at the beginning, and the altered bit at the beginning, really bring this piece alive. Nice work. Not the best SoM mix out there, but worth keeping and a good listen once in a while.
  13. Earthbound is on my 'to play' list. That list, by the way, is very long, but this makes me want to play it tomorrow. I love this! It's so quirky! Certainly not accessable to everyone, but I found it to be very enjoyable, and there is so much that could be done with this mix. Nice work.
  14. I actually liked how the beginning started almost exactly like the game, then drifted away from that setting. A little cliche, but it worked for me. I also enjoyed the first half of the mix the most, being able to see what was going on with the original and the upgrades. The 'voice sample' chant from the game made me smile a bit, though it was a bit strange. Suddenly everything gets very etheral, which was a bit too fast for me, and also kinda weird. I guess, overall, the song is kind of weird. It works, in it's own strange way. My issue with the mix is that once the 'etheral' trance comes in, I feel like all trace of the source is lost. Maybe it's in the bass line or something, but the song loses it's recognizability (is that a word?) after that.
  15. I will reiterate that this song is just cute. Techno, bubbly, quirky, and cute. Octave bass is a great way to start the song, nicely done there. The bubbled synth is a bit strange, and also very present. Perhaps a little overpowering. Some of the syncopated stuff begins to sound strange, but I feel like I was focusing too much on it. Perhaps if I have the song more background it won't feel so strange. Fun mix, good job.
  16. I would like to chime in that I fully support the third year of this endeavor. From last year until now we have gotten all mixes to have 6 reviews or more! How awesome is that? I'd personally like to see every mix with at least ten reviews. Right now there are 47 mixes with 6 reviews, 50 mixes with 7 reviews, 67 with 8, and 76 mixes with 9 reviews. That is a lot of reviews, yes, but I personally have yet to go through about half of those with 9 reviews, and every review helps! Take the time to do a review a day if you can. You'd be surprised what gems you'll find, trust me.
  17. I would like my own custom avatar, but I'm definatley not cool enough. As far as I know, I'm the only frequent poster that uses Katt, though, so it works out.
  18. I *gasp* don't know the source that well, but this still rocks. Great solo, awesome bass. Nice stuff. Oddly enough, the song really feels longer than 2:30. Like noticebly longer. It's weird...but maybe I'm just tired. Anyways, rock on.
  19. I really like the opening of the song. Very nicely done there. Overall, nothing sticks out in the track. I mean that in a good way. Damon mentioned that it was meant to chill out to, and it does absolutely that. The mood is perfect. The ending is the only sore spot. The fade out and then the sudden ending is a bit much, and unnessecary. Aside from that, good job.
  20. Personally, I don't care for this mix, but there's a lot going for it, and with the percussion/sound effects it can be very catchy. The mix feels very short, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it seems almost too short to me. There is also very little done to the source melody. The soundscape it's in is cool, but it feels to built up around rather than with, if that makes sense. Good stuff, just not to my liking.
  21. Great song that still holds up after these years. Wonderful name, as well. I found the organ to be my favorite instrument/part overall, but everything sounds really good. The sudden transition to the slow section/ending was a tad strange, though it worked well as an ending. The transition itself was maybe a little too sudden. Aside from that, really good.
  22. I love the tuba in this. Don't ask my why, it just makes me happy to hear it. What a cute little mix! The slow section is particularly adorable. The bubble effects are perfect. Great addition.
  23. I gotta agree with Zircon. I will hold a grudge against you if you don't finish and submit this. Really, I will.
  24. Overall, there's just a strangeness of the mix that doesn't sit right. We're in some sort of pseudo-key here, and somethings a little too off. Can't say this works for me.
