OCR00430 - Rygar "Caverns of Sagila"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I remember watching my brother playing this game. The theme here doesn't ring a bell to me, so I'm going based off what I hear in the mix. Guitars are pretty big, in a good way. Bass is prety rocking as well, like the bass line. The volume is inconsistant, as OA says, which is a drawback. The ending is somewhat awkward as well. Would have liked a bit more in that. Overall decent, and probably better with nostalgia involved, but worth a listen. -
OCR00421 - Mega Man 3 "SnowBro Intro"

Very classic. Little more downtempo than most mixes of the same theme, which is a nice change from the usual fair. Overall the energy was a little subpar in my opinion. It felt like the mix was trying hard to be more energetic, but wasn't getting there. Possibly a little more in terms of bass would have brought everything up a notch to me. Overall it's a minor gripe to a pretty good song. Still worth holding onto. -
OCR01830 - Gradius III "Declaration of War"

This song was entirely too energetic for me to review last night around midnight, so now that I've had a full night's rest I can dive in. Love the energy (now that I'm awake). This just shouts how very happy the world is and that we should go out with huge grins on our faces. I like how it never loses that energy too, nice work on that. Kind of odd that it's named "Declaration of War" though. What's up with that? I personally would have never noticed that this was a collab, the way things fit together so well. Nice combination of instruments. Scaredism rocks the guitars, and OA has his super fast synth solos. Nice work together, you two. -

This makes me think of some part of a movie where people are in a race to do something really important and OMG they're being pursued. Dark, technoish feel, anxiety strings, etc. Overall it's a pretty good mix, and I think it creates a nice atmosphere. -
OCR01828 - Super Metroid "Heat Vision"

The opening is fantastic, swinging the bass. Doing that alone made this mix win. Everything else is icing on the cake. This was one of my favorites on VARIAtions. Love the style for this mix, and I enjoy it a lot more than the original track. Nice work DS! -
Yep! It's still on my space if you need.

DA sent her stuff to Prophet to melodyne for Route 10. DA also asked 4 different guys to sing the Pallet town stuff. DA is waiting for that stuff.

OCR01817 - Tales of Phantasia "Just Go"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Fantastic job by both mixers. I definately can't see this one with just a synth lead, so Fishy really makes this stand out. Justin really knows how to get good sounds out of orchestral stuff, and it really worked quite well here. One of my favorites from the album. -
OCR01815 - Tales of Phantasia "Crisis Healing Salve"

I'm torn over this one. There are parts I really enjoy, there are parts I enjoy seperately, and then there are parts I'm not sure about. The intro is wonderful, and I think it fits Mint's theme perfectly. I would have loved to hear the entire song like that. The transition to the prog section was tenuous, I felt like scratching my head and wondering how it managed to get there. The prog rock section in itself was pretty good, with fantastic guitar work. Some spots didn't mesh well, as the judges mentioned (some string sections weren't quite meshing right). The section from 2:20 was pretty cool, I found that to be the best moment in that section. I'm glad people are willing to take a chance combining genres that we wouldn't expect. It didn't work overall for me, but there were moments I really enjoyed seperately. -
This is some creepy stuff. Not usually a fan of this style of music (sorry CotMM, just not my stuff), but I can appreciate what has been done to really create a sinister atmosphere. I had to read the lyrics to figue out what was being sung, but having them almost undecipherable makes them fit in just fine. Nice work, even if it's not my thing.

OCR01826 - Chrono Trigger "Fight for Our Future!"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nekofrog brings some awesome rock to this track, and I'm glad to see it get some coverage rather than all the more popular CT tracks that are usually done. The guitars and the bass really do the song justice. I can't say the drums do too much for me. It would have been nice to have those be a tad louder to really bring up the energy. I'm on the fence about the Schala moments as well; when it first came in I thought it broke up the energy, but as it transitioned to the next section it worked well. It will take me a few more listens to really get my opinion on that one. The rising synth line at ~3:10 felt a little out of place as well. It lacked the strong kick of everything else presented. Not sure what could have been used otherwise, but I'm not crazy about it as is. Enjoyable, but some things could really bring this track up in my opinion. -
Happy birthday!!!

The arrangement is fantastic! Really a great transition to an orchestral piece. Part writing is awesome. I'll agree with everyone on the choral part, but I'm more impressed with the background at the choral part, it fits perfectly. Can't wait to hear more from this newb -
Oh please; they can hate on you procrastinating so long when you know you're just gonna 'NO' it anyways.

OCR01820 - Super Metroid "In Your Prime"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I love this theme from the game, so generally anything that mixes it I love. That being said, this mix particularly stands out. Great percussion work and a mix of samples that really puts some energy into the mix. The piano lead up to the 2 minute mark stands out in particular. Nice work. -

That is some awesome trombone playing. He really has a great tone! Great mix, and a really good style adaption for this peice. Not something I would have expected, but welcome none-the-less. There were a few times I wasn't feeling the guitar as much as the brass, but since I was trumpet player for 10 years, I might be a little biased. Great job -
OCR01818 - Final Fantasy VI "This Hazy Place"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The ambience of this track is great. It puts me in a good 'space out' mood. But then again, maybe it's because I'm tired. I'm amazed that the theme doesn't come in explicitly until over 3 minutes in. How did that happen without me losing interest (generally I'm a melody person)? Kudos on that. Great genre adaption. -

Chocobo is coming along awesomely. Just to let the masses know. -
Ah right, I was thinking of the wrong theme. Makes much more sense now. Anyone I've shown the 5/4 video to is dumbstruck at how hilarious it is. I still want to know if the guy is series or pulling a bad prank, though.

What Ridley's theme is in 5/4? I only know Metroid and Super Metroid.

I can't believe I didn't check to see if the lyrics got posted. That's pretty odd of me. "Feel the rhythm of the night, Hold me close and let our hearts collide. Feel the rhythm of my moves, Let me show you what my body can do. Your voice takes me higher, Makes my heart accelerate. My soul is flying, 'Til you bring me down again." Thanks to everyone who reviewed. This was a different and enjoyable experiance for me. I look forward to working with Ambient again, he did an awesome job.
