OCR00312 - Chrono Trigger "Schala Ancients"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
OA got the word I was looking for. The track overall sounds muddy. Things have too much delay or something, because at points I almost lose what's going on. There are points where it sounds alright as is, but at times I wish things were clearer. The track is quite mellow, and it's nice to chill out to. I didn't think the drums were a bad edition, but maybe a little sudden. The original melody heard near the end briefly was pretty cool. I would have liked more of that. Ending is a bit sudden, even if the fade was longer that would have been better. Still an enjoyable mix, despite it's faults. -

Wow, this is really awesome. Usually it takes me a while to get into Shnab tracks, but this one is easily accessible, and you can tell it's deep. Get this. now. -

I'm a fan of this. It's really relaxing. Just what I needed after a long work day. -
OCR00013 - Phantasy Star "Alis Overture"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A pretty piece, maybe a little too sappy for my tastes. The piano melody is quite nice, and also apparently original, so kudos for that. More bass sounds in general would really help balance things out. I don't usually say that, but this is one of those cases where the piece is too treble, in my opinion. Some lower notes in the piano would have really evened it out. Overall, for it's age, the mix has held up quite well. Nice work. -
Good, fun mix. Love the funk feel overall. Quite enjoyable, and pretty polished even for an earlier mix. Love the details put in, like the various sounds you hear. Nice work.

OCR00496 - Vortex "Groove-Mecha"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Needs more attention, this mix does. Honestly, a sweet grooving mix. McVaffe really does a nice job on this, and I suggest more people give it a listen. DJP is right, however, a solo would have been a nice contrast the mellow feel of the rest of the piece. Then again, it might break the mood a little too much. Guess we may never know... OCR00558 - Super Mario Bros. 2 "The DarK Underground"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've always enjoyed this mix. It's long, I'll grant that, but it's not something that I stop and really focus on. Having it in the background is hypnotic, in quite a good way. Larry is right, there isn't anything else like this on OCR that I've seen, and it's worth having. -
OCR00603 - Chrono Trigger "To Far Away Timescapes"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm not too crazy about this one. There is little melodic variation, and not much in the way of changing sections around, either. Some parts repeat again, or somewhat ubruptly change to a new part, but nothing feels like it flows like it should. The chord changes don't always work, either, which is another detracting factor. The soundscape is decent, though the drums get a bit intrustive at the end which others mentioned. The feeling overall is light which works well, but with the tempo and the drums, I would venture to say it feels rushed as well, which doesn't sit with me well. Not my favorite mix, but it has some goodthings going for it. -

I really like this mix. Sounds are nice, and everything meshes quite well together. More people should be getting this one. -
OCR00310 - Xenogears "Soft Winds Cry"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I am familiar with this song, must have gotten to it somewhere in my short venture through Xenogears (it's next on my playlist, so I'll become much more familiar with it soon). That being said, this doesn't really deviate much, if at all, from the source melodically. I would have liked to have heard something new. Overall, the song is pretty, but I don't feel like the instruments mesh right. The synth contrasts with the drums (the snare hit is a little too loud for me, also), and the guitar just kind of feels...there. I find it distracting, and it takes away from the mix for me. Ending is way too quick. Not crazy about the fade out, either. Worth listening to, but nothing that I'm overly psyched about. -
I think the one thing that bothers me is the...sound...for lack of better words, that I keep hearing constantly in the more industrial section. It absolutely fits the track, but it really grates me after a while. Aside from that, great mix, as per Anso's usual. Nice deviation from his norm, but I was able to get into it reguardless, and it was quite enjoyable. Killer bassline.

OCR00404 - Xenogears "Dale of the Wind"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A very nice, peaceful track. More people need to comment on this one. Sounds are still good by today's standards, and the arrangement is nice. Nice CC reference, made for a great ending. Keeping this one. -
OCR00083 - Skate or Die "Subcrunch"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The background line really stands out in a good way with this one. I think it holds the mix together. Don't know the source, but the rock feel works pretty well with the melody. Kudos on that. Main synth is a bit out of place, but not the worst match-up I've heard. Retro, and enjoyable. -
OCR00080 - Shinobi "Shuriken Mix"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The first melodic synth is pretty grating. Certainly suits the style, and I think even if I were further from my speakers it wouldn't be so bad. Where I am now it just overpowers the rest of the mix. Bringing up the bass/rest of the mix might help that. Nice trance going on, doesn't get overly repetative. Catchy melody, and good sounds throughout, aside from the melody. Nice work. -
OCR00041 - Gradius "Horizontal Armada"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The first few seconds really makes me think of Star Trek. This is a weird concoction. Having the horn in the techno-y feel is very strange to me. Almost too opposite to really mesh. Despite that, the horn sound is pretty decent for the age. The rest of the piece meshes well together, and the mix is pretty energetic throughout. Oh, and the ending is pretty ubrupt. Overall, I'm not crazy about the mix, and have to unfortunately pass on it, but it seems that the other reviewers enjoyed it, so it's a personal opinion. -
OCR00084 - Bubble Bobble "This Is Not a True Ending"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It is strange to hear this song after hearing the remix of it. In a way it's cool to see the 'source of the source', but it also is a big contrast to asphixyated (or however that's spelled). In comparison I think it plays a little too tame, but if I'd listened to it first, I think the second would be too far out of whack. Very interesting. Overall, it's got potential, but the piece doesn't really bring it out into the open. Much more could have been done to this besides the key change. -
OCR00596 - Revenge of Shinobi "Chinatown (Bad Sushi)"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Drumwork is solid, which really drives the piece. Melody is nice, which kept me interested. Not sure if I'm sold on the synth choices, but I think it's more an age factor at this point. Nothings bad about them, but I would like to hear more realistic flutes, for example. I imagine it was pretty good for it's time, though, so I'm not really complaining. Nice work overall. -

OCR01768 - Ragnarök Online "Samurai Discotheque"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
My experiance with RO wasn't the greatest. I tried the free trial period. In that time, I met NO ONE who was around my level aside from a couple of friends I dragged into trying it with me. There were plenty of bots, and people had a tendency to spawn high level monsters right outside towns so that I was quickly killed more often than not. That and I failed about 4 times at getting a pet. However, this mix is really awesome. Definately uplifted my not so great mood. Thanks! -
OCR00291 - Blaster Master "Japanese Swamp"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The beginning is pretty odd, that's for sure. It took me a while to get into this one, as a result. I'm a little thrown off by the title, because as OA mentions, a few of the instruments are japanese, but they aren't used in a japanese fashion. The overall mood is set nicely, and certainly there's a lot going for it overall, but in general it's a bit too quirky for my tastes. Still a good job by Mazedude. -
OCR00645 - Lufia II "Time Preserved ~ April Showers"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix holds up well. Very enjoyable and relaxing. Everything is put together nicely, although overall it doesn't deviate from the original too much. I don't see that as a bad thing with this mix, however it would have been nice to have a small original section pieced in there somewhere. Mixed feelings about the darker section that comes in at 1:28. Feels out of place towards the rest of the mix. Not horribly out of place, just not a contrast I really expected or wanted to hear overall. Overall, nice work.
