OCR01860 - Little Nemo "Sunshine Through My Window"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like how the remix manages to stay close to the whole idea of sleeping and dreaming. While it is cheery and upbeat, it still manages to sound like a melody you'd play to a little kid who's about to go to sleep. Sweet dreams. -
OCR01859 - Final Fantasy IX "The Rose General"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Usually, the vocals in remixes are just another "instrument" to me; they enrich the soundscape, but I hardly ever pay any attention to what is actually sung. This, however, is different. It's the very first time that I actually pay attention to the lyrics (might be because the instruments complement the vocals instead of just filling the soundscape as noisily as possible), and I really like them. Quite the positive surprise. Nice work. -
OCR01858 - Super Dodge Ball "Rockin' the Yard"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Furious intro; the perfect way to start a song. The instrumentation here is wonderful. The drums, the EP, the sax, the guitars...it all comes together so incredibly well (though I do agree with what Bahamut said). Amazing remix. If that's how you roll solo, then I hope you'll grace us with some more remixes of this kind. -
VG Opinion Poll #13 - Has OCR helped you musically?
Martin Penwald replied to glasfen's topic in General Discussion
a. And that's true for the remixes as well as the stuff that was posted in the many music threads in Unmod. -
OCR01857 - Final Fantasy VI "Vision of Celes"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very nice pacing and instrumentation. While most of the remix sounds just like an orchestral remix should sound, i.e. very good, I have to say that my favorite part is 3:00 onwards. The brass and the melody it's playing really remind me of 60's/70's western movies, and that is something a.) I really dig and b.) we don't get to hear very often 'round these parts. Nice work. -
OCR01856 - SD Snatcher "Difficult Move Indeed"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely nailed the spy-movie feeling. The synth coming in at 1:45 is really nice, and I agree to what was said about the wah guitar, though I wish it would have been a little louder. -
OCR01855 - Mega Man 2 "The Wily Malfunction"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The intro is really weird, even for a Mazedude remix. But that's what makes his remixes so special and interesting. Listening to this remix (especially the middle part) wearing headphones is a blast. -
OCR01854 - Rygar "Don't Mess with Rygar"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very well done build-up, and the finale puts a smile on my face. Short, but very fun and quirky tune. Nice one. -
OCR01853 - Faxanadu "Ce pays me rend mauvais"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Digging the use of the chiptune, but I think it should have taken a backseat a litte bit more often. I really like the intro and outro, and some of the breakdowns are really nice, but I think the other instruments should've come out a little more. -
I was pretty excited when I read Shpongle in the write-up, but the remix proved to be quite different from what I expected. After I overcame my intial disappointment, I started to appreciate the remix for what it is: a nice and smooth arrangement with a very fat low-end. I was hooked, and I've listened to the song quite a few times since then. Nice work.

OCR01851 - Final Fantasy VIII "Devotion & Deception"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Starts off with one of the most memorable melodies of FFVIII (probably because you get to hear it over and over and over in the game), which is a good way to start off a remix IMO. I do agree that it sounds somewhat fake, though that is not too much of an issue. Fairly relaxing first part that picks up a bit at 2:25. Still radically different from what follows at 3:15. The latter half is much more dramatic, and the choir samples definitely add a lot. Digging the instrumentation here. -
OCR01849 - Phantasy Star Online "Ragol Weather"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I get a certain 90's/16bit vibe from it, too. I guess that's because of the lead-synth, which is absolutely wonderful. -
TranceAddicts.com VGM Remix Album torrent here.

I remember this. It's pretty good; if you didn't get it back then, you should get it now. -
OCR01848 - Neverwinter Nights "Kara-Turian Nights"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Agree. Overall a really good remix that manages to marry traditional orchestra and asian influence pretty much perfectly. But I wonder, does anyone else get a 24 vibe from the part starting at ~2:05? The melody the brass is playing reminds me of the BGM of the series. -
OCR01847 - Final Fantasy VII "The Shinra Shuffle"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I love jazz remixes, and this one is among the best. I can't help but follow the beat with my fingers, tapping them to the rhythm. I hope they submit more in the future. -
OCR01845 - Legend of Zelda "Zelda Heineken"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm with djp on this one, in that I don't think the arrangement would have been enough on its own, i.e. the novelty factor helped to get the song on OCR a fair bit. But then again, what does it matter. It's a great idea, and the song itself is good times, too. -
TRANSLATION REVIEW NEEDED: Japanese, Spanish, French
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I assume you want to know which of the two words should be used in this context? Using the sentece "このサイトのXXは" (This site's mission is...) yields 375.000 results for 目標 and 23.500 results for 目的, so I'd go with the former. -
I don't know the source, so I cannot comment on the arrangement, but as a stand-alone song, this piece is brilliant. Even without a melody, this song has more energy to it than many of the more elaborate remixes posted here. About the title: I, too, was a little annoyed when I saw it on the front-page; not because it has Jesus Christ in its name (to be honest, I never thought that someone could get as worked up about it as some of the people who posted in here did), but because I am tired of the meme and don't really need 4chan jokes in my remix titles. Anyway, great job, DU.

OCR01843 - Civilization IV "Destined for Greatness"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Lovin' the flute, but I'm not much of a fan of the vocals; they don't sound very august and miss the oomph of the original. The rock part is nice since it takes the song into a very unexpected direction. -
What a bunch of complete and utter crap. That painting thing? Fucking Mario Paint let you do better stuff than this.

OCR01839 - Final Fantasy VI "City Corner Lullaby"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely delivers what the title promises: a lullaby. It's like several people mentioned in this thread; if you don't pay attention to it, the remix will go right past you, but I think a lullaby isn't really supposed to grab your attention and never let go of it anyway. -
OCR01838 - Portal "Live from [SUBJECT HOMETOWN HERE]"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
At first, the not-quite-great performance and/or recording turned me off, but I gave the remix another chance, and it quickly grew on me. It's a live performance, so some things can and should be forgiven, and it actually adds some nice touches to the remix, like the quiet laughter at e.g. 0:58 and the applause in the end. Also, I like the singer's voice, and the choir is a nice addition.
