Precursors - The Ur-quan masters Star Control 2 inspired music. Pretty good stuff.

This is incredibly sweet. Very intense atmosphere in this one. The bassline coming in at 0:57 kicks ass. Dunno, but this one seems to have a richer soundscape when compared to some of your other songs; there are times when there's a lot of stuff going on (e.g. up until 1:57, and after the following breakdown). Nice, somewhat creepy synth coming in at 2:48. Very ambient breakdown at 3:07. Fits perfectly into the song, and the latter half of the breakdown reminds me of Super Metroid. Which is always a good thing. Very nice work. Keep 'em coming.

OCR01594 - Final Doom "Hung Like a Pinky"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The atmosphere TO's Doom remixes generate is always great, and this one is no exception. The intro is somewhat cheesy, but it works nevertheless. Good one. -
Holy. Crap. More than 7 hours of music. And a lot of Izmar in there as well.

You pretty much missed the point. This isn't about character design etc. Just as dsx said, it's about the fact that it's a licensed game. If a company produces an absolutely new game/franchise, they have to put great effort into it, since they need to attract as many people to it as possible. However, if they produce a game based on an anime/manga/movie/whatever, they can slack off and will still sell heaps of copies to the fans (as long as the game isn't a complete pile of crap).

Groovemaster is right; the intro from 0:15 on is reminiscent of Pacific State. The synth entering at 0:30 makes this one an instant winner. I simply love this retro-house style. See also: the breakdown from 2:00; nice way to end it with some heavy drums, btw. The outro is too long IMO; it's 45 seconds with basically three parts, every one 15 seconds. However, there isn't enough in there to warrant 15 seconds for each.

OCR01592 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Malicious Fingers"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like the intro. Adds a little fun to the remix. Everything else: the usual Snappleman goodness. This time it's not only about kickin' guitar-solos, but also snyth ones. Amazing stuff; really gets your blood boiling. -
Something remarkable has happened - CPS3 emulation
Martin Penwald replied to Necrotic's topic in General Discussion
Funnily enough, back when I first heard the news about the emu, I thought about a comment you made on that a few months ago. -
Well, considering how well their last anime/manga-based fighter (Shijô saikyô no deshi Ken'ichi, 3D fighter with some 2D mechanics) turned out, I'm looking forward to the new game. Here's to hope that the manga it'll be based on isn't complete crap.

Well, it's a DrakeSword mix, so arrangement and production quality are top notch. No need to comment on that. I really love the atmospheric feel the song has to it. The melody takes you on a four-and-a-half minute journey that ends with the masterfully incorporated lullaby. Thanks to the fantastic choice of instruments, the song keeps you interested for the full time; there isn't any part that could make your thoughts wander away from the song. Truly epic. Very nice work.

OCR01590 - Highway Hunter "Fast Cars, Russian Cigars"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The intro is indeed very different from what follows. Nice idea. The song itself is a quirky, upbeat tune, especially from 1:00 onward. For some reason, this remix makes me think of a town in a Suikoden game; it all sounds so lively and bright. So yeah, russian cigars and fast cars aren't exactly what I think of when I listen to this, but the mental image it evokes is nice nonetheless. Also, I don't mind the synthy fell it has at all. Works well with the atmosphere. Nice work. -
OCR01589 - God of War (PS2) "Minotaur Nightmares"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
An industrial waltz? Now that's something you don't hear too often; however, it works incredibly well. Furthermore, the track has a spooky, hellish vibe to it. Listening to it evokes pictures of demons and devils dancing augustly in some dark, blood-red dome. Very well done. -
OCR01107 - Mario Kart 64 "Frappe Cafe Vibe"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Another nice jazz-remix by Joshua Morse. The saxophone sounds good to me, and the bongo sections add a certain something to the arrangement. The only real complaint I have is the occasional clipping/crackling in the background, as it is clearly audible when listening to the song using headphones. Nice work. -
OCR01588 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Breaking the Ice"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
While it is true that Ice Cap is a fairly popular track, I like what DigiE did with it here arrangementwise. However, I really dislike the synth coming in at 0:46. It's too high and too loud in my opinion. The other synth is pretty annoying as well, particulary in the breakdown around 2:30. The piano sounds pretty average in some places, but gets the job done surprisingly well, especially in the end. In conlusion, nice arrangement, but the choice of instruments/synths isn't my cup of coffee. -
OCR01587 - Chrono Trigger "Dignity Ark"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Although this is one of the games/songs which have been remixed to death, I still like what the remixer did here, since this rendition has a pretty unique feeling to it. As has been said before, the guitar sounds very realistic. Nice. -
I haven't downloaded anything from here in quite a while; I need to get back into the game.
-
The vocals blend in so well that I didn't really realize they were there the first time I listened to the song (or maybe it was just too late...ahem). Very epic feeling this song has to it. It's almost 5 minutes long, but despite not having anything resembling a "usual" buildup and climax, it never gets stale/boring. Which shows how well the arrangement was done. Good job.

Skies of Arcadia - Smooth Skies WIP
Martin Penwald replied to J.B.Garren's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Overall, this is pretty nice work. Some points I'd like to mention: - drums are too loud/dominating; try to tone them down a bit - the flute needs to go or be replaced with something better; it's too quiet and too high-pitched - I like the string plucking; adds sort of a mediterranean flair - the piano does sound a little dry IMO - ending is way too abrupt; I'd like to second nec5's suggestion about a "hurrah" kinda ending. -
The Remixes are listed on the page of the game itself, e.g. this (click me) is the page of Final Fantasy 1&2 Advance. If you scroll down, you'll find a category called "Remix" where you have links to different sites (including OCR) offering remixes for this particular game. Lots of dead links, though.

"The Fourth Garden" - ambient chillout
Martin Penwald replied to OverCoat's topic in Post Your Original Music!
More left/right panning, plz. Very ambient stuff; the bassline (???) from 1:04 is a nice addition. Nice beat from 1:38 on; also, very interesting transition into this part. I like how the one sound becomes louder and LOUDER until the song is released into the next section. The chorus sample (or, what I think is a chorus sample) would be better if it sounded cleaner/softer IMO. Uhuhu, nice echoes used from 3:18 on. I like this one. -
Broken Dolls - little ambient groove
Martin Penwald replied to OverCoat's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Hm, I don't really like the way you start the song off; it kinda sounds like a nerve-shattering version of Jean-Michel Jarre style. It gets better at 1:02, though, once the drums come in. Makes it more...whole or something. Nice breakdown section from 2:03, pretty atmospheric stuff here. Ending: pretty good stuff from 3:35 on; again, the sound which is used from the end of the breakdown up until 3:35 is a little too psycho for me. Or maybe it's just too loud. -
OCR01583 - Super Mario 64 "Spinlock"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
As Vig says, since Intense Color, there hasn't been any remix featuring this kind of out-there interpretation of the source tune. Very interesting take on it, and certainly nothing you would expect when thinking about a Mario 64 remix. The slow section up to 1:22 didn't really catch my attention, but once the song picks up afterwards, it becomes better. The piano part from 2:19 took me by surprise (when I first listened to it, I assumed that this was already the next remix in my playlist), but it's a pretty cool part. -
That's what I was afraid of from the very beginning. Good looking sprites, but crappy animations. No thanks, I'd rather have some TS or MotW. The sprites may not be high-res, but at least the moves look smooth.
