Give the gift of reviews! (part 3)
SwordBreaker replied to OceansAndrew's topic in General Discussion
Review the track that Hale made and I sang on in the WIP boards. -
Wow...I really didn't mean to start an argument here. Seriously, even though I really meant what I said about a potential FF7-OCR deal, I didn't give it much thought while writing it and perhaps should've clarified more. I won't argue about the whole system exclusivity thing because I can write an article worth of ideas and options. The reason why I wrote PS3 in the first place is because that system is what first comes to mind when talking about FF7. Sony has funded Square-Enix through and through with the PS1 classic and even had the liberty of distributing Advent Children, so it's natural for me to write PS3 and leave it at that. Moreover, what's wrong with being optimistic that the remake actually exists? S-E will make one as long as the positive reaction remains. Heck, even Crisis Core's ending teases us with a "to be continued". Even though it's a tech demo, did you notice how positive the reaction was from internet murmurings? The n64 had a tech demo of FF6, the PS2 had a tech-demo of FF8...yet nobody even knows that SE experimented on these systems like that. It's the same thing with a potential OCR inclusion for the FF7 remake soundtrack, the deal doesn't have to be exactly like SFHD. Perhaps Square-Enix can take some of the best-produced and most fitting tracks from Voices of a Lifestream and produce other tracks on their own. It can be anything, really. It's really not a silly idea like one of you suggested. OCR working under Capcom for SFHD was a silly idea if one suggested it years ago, but that just happened as you can see. The downloads on VotL have been excellent, the response has been extremely positive, and zircon even had the honor to hand the album to Nobuo Uematsu himself...I bet a lot of people thought that this "historic" event would be silly or impossible, but guess what: it happened! About SF's so-called "dying popularity", let's not forget that Street Fighter II for the SNES remains to be Capcom's best-selling game of all time. So to be working on a remake of Capcom's best-selling game (not a direct remake, but you know what I mean so please don't nitpick) is extremely flattering and I don't think Capcom would've taken the risk if they didn't know that OCR was good enough for the job description. Plus, it's free. As for Asphalt's quality compared to other OCR albums, I actually think that it's good. Not the best in the world, but good overall. I mean...I have to admit, it was the least interesting one to me. I only had Blind's Sagat mix, Sixto's Ken mix, and Jose's Vega track in my playlist. Yet after SFHD OST came out, my interest obviously sparkled so I downloaded the Asphalt torrent. If it was that bad, then how come I think that some of the remixes are actually superior to the remastered HD versions? Including the three remixes I already had on my playlist, I was extremely surprised by how good the lengthened versions of Fei-Long and Cammy are. Even though Asphalt didn't cover the whole SFII Turbo soundtrack, I think that it's way better than Hedgehog Haven and Relics of the Chozo. Bah. I sound like an OCR whore. But I don't care. EDIT: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/superstreetfighteriiturbohdremix/review.html Gamespot Review. 8.5/10. Received a "Great Original Soundtrack" Emblem. Here's what the reviewer says about the soundtrack: "Adding to the phenomenal visual delight is an energetically enhanced soundtrack. A fusion of heavy metal guitar riffs and groovy electronica will pump you up with retooled versions of classic jams in the menus and during fights."

Wish I did. I'll try to reach Hale and see if he can give it to us again. The competition thread had a link to the instrumental before. @J3 We'll see how this goes. I'm not too hopeful on anything, but it wouldn't hurt if I try to submit for laughs. Still need to get Hale's approval of course. The thing is, I wish I can improve it ASAP...but I don't have my compo work anymore. I'll have to re-record everything from square one, which is a huge undertaking for me right now. I do know of that infamous Zelda track you linked and another one by Shael Riley titled "The Music of My Groin". Those are still the quirkiest tracks of OCR, and we haven't seen much of those recently. @Kizyr "Isn't your thing" is a comment that has been echoed in the previous feedback as well. It's too quirky for your tastes perhaps. I don't mind you telling me anything constructive if you want to. I'm really glad you can relate to the lyrics, though. Hope your med school friends feel the same way.

Thanks for the comments. You definitely echoed some of the criticism I've gotten from the competition. About that odd stereo effect, that was basically an experiment that didn't work, which is why it sounds really awkward. Thanks for noting the tone. Didn't get a lot of comments on the quality of my voice. All I got was that I sound like a confident singer. Glad you found the intro to be funny. You really think this is OCR-worthy, though? Vocals included?

Regarding the whole "getting paid" issue, I think it's an excellent decision for OCR to do this for free. First off, that builds up a very good relationship with Capcom in general. I mean, think about it...OCR does it for free the first time, and with all the heart and soul put into the SFII OST...that in turn builds up a huge possibility for Capcom to hire OCR for another project, this time from the ground-up. When that day comes, I'm pretty sure that OCR remixers involved will get paid for all the effort. Right now, I'm hoping that Square-Enix contacts DJP and zircon to remix music for the inevitable FF7 Remake on the PS3.

It's really not fair to compare this trailer to IGN's work. For one thing, like friendlyhunter said, IGN's trailer was fake. Also, IGN had a much bigger budget so they hired a professional company to make this trailer for them (Rainfall Films). The Hero of Time movie, on the other hand, is fan-made work that's a full-length feature. I've heard of this project a year or so ago, and I'm happy that these fans are ambitious enough to complete this task...despite not being as perfect as we all want. Have you guys heard of the previous fan-made film called "The Legend of Link"? It was a completely humorous take on the Zelda franchise that made me laugh out loud numerous times. Plus, they've used music from OCR with credit. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7573426796770713155 Part 1 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8113238663847801210 Part 2 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7966235459721003522 Part 3 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7532616152204191764&hl=en Credits

The Source Tune: http://hale.voidaudio.net/music/vocr3/vocr3_ode.mp3 The Remix (thanks to Hale-Bopp for continuing to host it) http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=17574 VOCR3 Competition Thread Yup, this vocal compo was held awhile back. Obviously, Hale-Bopp is responsible for the track itself while I and several others did our best to fit in vocals. In other words, I wrote the lyrics, worked on the vocal mixing/production, created the melodies/harmonies, and sang my heart out. While my entry is more suited for Overlooked Remix, I've decided to share it with you all. Hale by default has done an excellent job with the track, so I don't think that anyone will have problems with his work. It would be nice to hear everyone's praises Hale in this thread nonetheless. Curious to hear thoughts on the singing and lyrics, though. I've gotten some feedback from the compo but I'd like to hear more from you guys if possible. I've had a lot of fun and experience with this compo either way. Lyrics are inspired by my life as a medical student. I've just increased the emotion and expression ten fold. Don't forget to check out the competition thread for the other awesome entries! You won't be disappointed! Lyrics: Intro (Spoken) Woo…Been awhile since I’ve been on stage Nonetheless, let’s show ‘em how it’s done boys VOCR style! Verse 1 Getting knocked down everyday Having doubts I think I may Give up…and just drop dead Being told I’m no good I just dunno…I think I should Kill myself…by eating lead Chorus Waiting for this shit to fall Is careless…it’s your own fault Take the lead and climb that wall Don’t stumble…just open that vault! Arabic Verse الليلة ليلتي الله يخليك يا أبتي عاشني عاشني فنان السنة سنتي ادعيلي ياجدتي عاشني أبغى انجح Translation: Tonight’s my night…for God’s sake, dad Because…because I’m the best! This year’s my year…pray for me, grandma Because…I want to pass! Verse 2 Friends say I’m way behind Maybe somehow I can rewind Great Scott…1.21 gigawatts Oh God I’m losing it Blowing out all candles lit Can’t breath...can’t connect the dots Chorus Waiting for this shit to fall Is careless…it’s your own fault Take the lead and climb that wall Don’t stumble…just open that vault! (Take it away, Dave!) [Note: David is Hale’s real name.] Guitar Solo Chorus Waiting for this shit to fall Is careless…it’s your own fault Take the lead and climb that wall Don’t stumble…just open that vault! Finale Goodnight OCRemix!

Rock/Metal Medley: Mega Man 9
SwordBreaker replied to FreddeGredde's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Wow...that is some awesome guitar playing, man. You've really done MM9's soundtrack a huge favor here. I'm extremely surprised that not a lot of people have decided to remix the tracks. Glad that you've decided to do multiple ones into a Medley. Despite some of the abrupt transitions, I'm LOVING this and I'm glad to have stumbled upon it here. Even if OCR does not accept this tune due to the site's standards (you should still submit nonetheless, what do you have to lose?), you should look to submit it elsewhere such as ThaSauce and VGMix.com! -
Well...yeah, I couldn't get into Sonic Heroes for some reason. Wasn't that interesting. The first Sonic Adventure was pretty disappointing for me as well...but that's because I played it late (the GameCube port). Didn't play Sonic 2006 or Shadow the Hedgehog. Reviews scared me off.

Lufia I & II: The World Will Know (symphonic rock)
SwordBreaker replied to Nekofrog's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Not familiar with the source...but this sounds extremely tight, man. Loving those guitars. Can't wait for the singing to come in...I'm familiar with DrumUltima's awesome vocals (it was the bacon he ate last night ) but I don't think I've heard Starla before. Regardless, keep up the good work. -
I'll probably go with the PS3 version once it's out. I recently learned that the next-gen versions are bigger than the Wii/PS2 ones...2 more levels, I believe. Speaking of next-gen, are there any framerate problems with the 360 version? If so, then I assume that it's going to be the same if not worse with the PS3 one. I'm not really sure what to think of the feedback so far. The Werehog gameplay has been bashed to bits by everyone, yet the 2D gameplay seems to hold up well and borrow elements from the DS's Rush series. The Sonic fan in me is telling me to go for this game despite the flawed Werehog stuff. After all, I LOVED the Rush games.

Castlevania Judgement should do the trick for you then.

OCR01783 - Street Fighter II "Red Cyclone"
SwordBreaker replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Shael, pat your band buddies on the back for me, will you? Seriously, when I first listened to this track in-game, I was shocked because it sounded so awesome. I didn't recall being that attracted to the Asphalt version this much (no offense to the original remixer) so I kept wondering whether the HD version was a completely new track or the same one remastered. Also, I noticed "The Grammar Club" in the game's credits and kept wondering which track did you guys contribute to. Anyway, enough of my blabbering. Loving this track. Don't have anything in particular to complain about aside from Capcom's "short length" stipulation. -
As other comments echoed, play Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii, JDP. The game is a Nintendo fanboy's dream come true. Plus, Solid Snake is a guest character alongside Sonic.

Like you David, I just downloaded the game (PS3 version) and got my ass handed to me by T-Hawk in medium. Are my old school skills dead or is this game harder than it was years ago? The game's nostalgic as always. Can't get the moves quite right due to the PS3's not-so-perfect control pad. New graphics are excellent, obviously. As for the music...well I listened to a couple of levels, and I'm liking it so far. Really sounds improved over the original OC Remixes...if only they were longer than the 2 minute restriction it would've been perfect. The intro remix of Ken kicks ass, who made that track? Of course, Sixto's Ken remix is still as good as ever. Love the character selection music. Zangief's tune rocks. E-Honda's really suits the stage...who made that one? Dee Jay's tune is really, really, really catchy. I have a bit of beef with Vega's remix, though...even though Jose tweaked it up to make it closer to the original flamenco-style (nice acoustic guitar additions) yet still kept that hip-hop vibe he had, I wish the vocals were still present. I bet Capcom has something to do with this. Still though, very nice work, you guys...especially with the "fast" versions of these tunes. EDIT: saw the latest updates and I got my answers to Zangief and E-Honda. Shael's band made Zangief, eh? Very interesting...

HD Remix soundtrack: What files/encoding quality do you want?
SwordBreaker replied to Liontamer's topic in General Discussion
I'm so glad that you guys are releasing this album for free. Can't wait to give it a listen and compare the work to Asphalt. Anyway, I voted for higher quality VBR mp3s, but it would be great to get WAV lossless packed in with the torrents at least. -
Don't have the game yet, but I just downloaded the main theme from the PlayStation Store for free. It's extremely catchy and radio-friendly. Excellent vocals. Would love to see someone in OCR take a jab in remixing this (coughJillforvocalscough).
-
Forgive me for not typing the whole title 'cause it's completely ridiculous. Anyway, reviews of this game will start pouring in as the release date closes in. IGN just posted the first review, singing praises everywhere. http://ps3.ign.com/articles/932/932390p2.html 8.7/10. On OC Remix's contribution: "I'm very impressed with the contributions of the OC Remix community. The music in this game is sweet and a great tribute to the original soundtrack." Can't wait to download this myself. Just a couple of days left.
-
Well, you've been quiet for a long while, Joe...I thought you quit the remixing business. Glad to see that you're still alive and kicking. The Ken Song is one of my favorite remixes of all time and I still listen to it from time to time. So damn catchy. Can't wait for that "Ryu Song". Keep up the good work. ~Gotta love it breaking people's bones. Though supernatural you don't mind to bleed alone!~

Philly People? NorthEast People? See The OneUps?
SwordBreaker replied to Mustin's topic in General Discussion
Alas, wish I can come. WAY too far for me. Oh well, I'm really enjoying Volume 2 at the moment. Glad I ordered it. -
Speaking of the game's music, it's awesome, wouldn't you say, guys? Does anyone know the names of these tracks and their artists? 'cause I think Media Molecule took the licensed route with this game ala Braid. We all know the Swinging Safari one due to obvious reasons. But I know nothing about the rest. *sings* If you ever step on my bush, I'll bring you down. I'll bring you down!
-
So...anyone playing this awesome game? I'm still going through the story levels. Extremely creative and awesome stuff. Audiovisuals are great. Controls are the weak point of this game so far. Too slippery. I have yet to start creating a level, but I did play one of my friend's. Also played online with random people and so far the game runs well. I'm wondering if any of you guys created levels yet? Maybe I can play them or something.
