OCR01745 - Double Dragon "The Secrets of Sosetsuken"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This one isn't as memorable as, say, Twin Blood, for me, but it's still a very strong track in its own respect. I don't really feel like the electronic elements are very engaging and it starts to feel repetitive after a while, but the guitar is well produced, well performed, and pretty much carries this song for me. Nice solo, that was definitely needed by that point in the song. Not a favorite, but I still enjoy listening to it on occasion. At the very least, there's a well-produced rock song with some cool riffs that might not be as creative as some of his newer mixes, but ain't bad compared to a lot of other rock schtuff you hear around the net -
OCR01930 - Final Fantasy IV "The Still Land"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like how you took a very simple source and started off with a similar minimalist soundscape for quite a while before expanding it. I think fans of the original will like how you stayed true to the original but also be able to appreciate all of the tasteful embellishments. Very good rendition, I couldn't think of a better way to do this song! -
I've had this one on my playlist since it came up on DoD and it's become a staple in my listening routine. The wahwah guitar, the fun bass, and the incredible soloing tops the list of favorite Sonic 3 mixes, favorite PoD mixes, and favorite jazzy-rock mixes all in one fell swoop. Glad this one got posted, it's incredible!

The thing I love about Protricity is the utter sense of respect he seems to have for the DKC2 soundtrack, and as a result the songs all end up feeling very true to the source but cranked all the way up to 11. This one's no exception, I love the rock/synth/orchestral hybrid, and the percussion during some of the breakdowns too. Whatever instrument you've got going at 1:41 and again later in the snog is my favorite part, though, it fits so well with the urgent mood of the rest of the song. Killer work!

OCR01629 - Jade Cocoon "People Made of Stone"

AnSo's debut mix is still one of the most impressive ones, and it's up against some really strong internal-competition with his other songs! I love the instrumental variety that unfortunately feels kinda lacking from some of the songs I've heard from him as of late I definitely wanna hear more stuff like this in the future! I can totally see this being used in a variety of different contexts and having it fit great in any of them. Epic final battle, car chase in the streets of Japan... I dunno, but it's a great multi-faceted remix that should not be left unnoticed! -
OCR01946 - Final Fantasy VI "A World of Decisions"

Yeah, I'm glad this got on the site I'm a sucker for emotive, flowing piano mixes and while this isn't as technically-incredible as the other solo piano mix we had posted today, I actually think I like this one just as much. It's a bold arrangement that I think succeeds, even though I don't know the source so I can't comment on how true it stays to it. Congrats on your debut! -
OCR01949 - Panzer Dragoon II Zwei "Lagi's Takeoff"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was just talking with halc a few seconds before I listened to this mix about how I was kind of getting a bit bored with straight orchestral mixes and how the genre was growing stale for me. When I downloaded this and listened to it, it felt like karma was rewarding me for complaining or something This is fresh, atmospheric, and really surprised me! Great debut mix! My only complaint is the ending, though... wtf happened there? o_O -
OCR01948 - Final Fantasy VIII "SeeD Mission"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
You guys really can crank out awesome tracks like no other. This one's no exception, I didn't have an issue with the strings but I do think the opening snares were pretty weaksauce It doesn't detract from the song though. I particularly thought the way you segued from hard rock and gradually broke down into something more electronic and mellow was expertly done! Nice acoustic guitar, too, that sounded perfect! Really killer job on the arrangement, playing... looking forward to hearing more out of you two! -
OCR01947 - Super Mario 64 "Big-Band Battlefield"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Stylistically, big-band is about as far as you can get from my favorite musical genre and it's not something I typically enjoy. However, between the source tune and the clever embellishments I think you guys made it work for me Like everyone's pointed out, it feels completely real and engrossing with the live jazz feel you've got going on... never has a remix made me feel like I'm really there listening to the band play more than this one! The random people talking are there only for enough time to establish the atmosphere but not enough to really distract from anything, which is pretty lucky when you're recording in a room full of people. You guys rock, please don't stop submitting gems like this! -
OCR01951 - Secret of Evermore "Canine Labyrinth"

This is definitely Sam at his finest. I don't mean to sound unappreciative of the talent that he's shared with the community, but a lot of his mixes are so fast-paced, technical, and spastic that I have a hard time listening to them as background music. I'm happy to say that this mix is just as interesting as his others in terms of sheer talent (especially for an improv!) but it's melodic and mellow enough to provide wonderful study music. This is some of Sam's finest work, IMO, this opus should not be missed! Also, this is my longest OCRemix that I have downloaded, it might even be the longest on the site. Good work -
Rozo, you kicked MAJOR ASS on the production end of this! This whole remix sounds like it's made of glass and everything is perfectly nestled into its own niche into the soundscape. Weak metaphor, but this really is beautiful even though the arrangement is a little weak. You've really raised the bar here, this is my favorite mix so far from the birthday flood and from you in general!

Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business - History

Is this just contingent on the 3 remaining mixes being completed? Or is there anything else that needs to get wrapped up before going live? -
http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26469 There's a couple on Metroid Metal too.

OCR00304 - Super Mario World "The Dark Reaches of SMW"
Emunator replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's hard not to compare this one to AeroZ/Zircon's more updated, fleshed out takes on the same theme, but even with those in mind I still think this one has its charms. The string samples feel weak but all the synthetic elements fit really well together. This one honestly feels like the kind of thing you'd hear passing the judges panel today, if the organic samples were updated and the arrangement was a bit more creative. Really nice work for such an early mix! -
OCR01131 - Sorcerian "Cursed Piano"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The piano tone really gives off an eerie mood that's reflected in the arrangement. I've always been a fan of this one - I have a hard time articulating just what I like about solo piano mixes but I wanted to express the fact that I did like it and think that the piano sound meshes wonderfully with the arrangement itself Lovely! -
OCR00180 - Punch-Out!! "Iron Mic Challenge"
Emunator replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like all the extraneous elements aside from the bass and synths. Particularly, I liked the bell ringing sound effect the first couple of times, but this one feels like the remixer threw together a 30 second loop and played it four times with just a few minor variations. Someone should freestyle over this song and upload it That would make it a lot more awesome. -
OCR01743 - Doom II "Crushing Headache"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I agree with Bahamut, this one didn't strike me as "amazing" like it seems to have with the other remixers. It's got a great soundscape and the percussive elements were done well, but the bass progression seems like the central focus of the song when you're not using it as background music and I think it's a bit too repetitive. Whatever happened around 3:00 made me start liking the song a lot more... I'm not sure why Dunno, the production quality on this one is high and most of the elements work well for creating background music. Not bad, and it definitely has that DOOM feel to it, so I guess... mission accomplished -
OCR01570 - Shadowgate "Crypt Rock"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Really aggressive but ultimately I don't really feel compelled by this song. It's got a lot of energy but it doesn't feel melodic enough to listen to for fun, and it feels way too powerful for background music. Phoenixdk did a pretty good job with it but for some reason I'm just not feeling it -
OCR00653 - M&M's Minis Madness "virt's Madness"
Emunator replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Eww, the brass doesn't sit well with me, but aside from that I think most of the other elements in the song are cohesive enough, even though they sound a little bit mechanical. This still has that traditional Mustin feel to it, so even for an old mix I was surprised by the personality to it Obviously Mustin's improved a lot since this but it's still not bad by any means. -
OCR00089 - Phantasy Star IV "Millennial"
Emunator replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
OWW! This one's way loud, I got quite a shock when I listened to this for the first time with the speakers all the way up. The intro's pretty trippy but unfortunately I don't think it transitions very well at all into the actual song. The growling synth bassline is relentless and gives the mix most of its bulk. It grows repetitive toward the end but I guess it's not as bad as some other songs I've heard from this genre The ending was kinda neat, too. -
OCR00710 - Kabuki: Quantum Fighter "USB MindLink"
Emunator replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The ambient effects that start off the mix are pretty cool, they remind me of a disgruntled monster growling at the bottom of a dark cave. In fact, it feels like they're sampled right out of Star Fox Adventures from the Krozoa Shrine. On to the actual mix though... I don't have much to say It's completely generic techno aside from the neat ambient effects (and I guess the pitch bended lead is pretty interesting, too) and I can't say I recommend this unless you're a huge fan of the source or the genre.
