  1. Heh, that band name made me think Autechure (sp?) I'm a big fan of the game, but it's been a while since I've played so the originals aren't fresh in my mind. It sounds like you're just giving samples of the songs rather than the songs themselves. It's hard to tell how far you've developed the themes without more. Also, are you planning to keep these as a medley or separate them into different songs? Anyway, right off the bat, the lower notes on that string thing are sounding slighty off-beat. Not sure why things all faded out at :43 even though it sounds like both sections are part of the same song. Instead of just dropping things and picking them back up, create a transition between the sections that moves the piece along. Things are still sounding a little sparse so far. You've basically laid down a loop with the low guitarish string part and then just add new parts in without any changeups. Drums, pads, other synths each come in and are on loop. This needs quite a bit more on the arrangement side to develop additional ideas. Things fade out again and a different sounding track comes in ~1:20. Hmm, same lead synth as last section, just playing different notes. This part doesn't develop much before fading out. Another section comes in for a short time. The trancey pad has some awkward gating on it. Doesn't quite sound like it's on beat properly in some places. I think it would be helpful to release more content of the songs if you want better criticism. You've got a good foundation for these tracks, but I can't tell any more at this point. Hope this helps. EDIT: Links to the originals would be very helpful also.
  2. OA gives some good criticism, but I just wanted to add a few things: Drums at the start sound a little dry to me. They need to sit back in the mix a bit more rather than being so exposed. Things get really muddy at 1:01 with everything coming in, and continue to get worse as more things come in. I can hear a lot of distortion on the cymbals and the backing pads. Might want to try EQing out the low end on the cymbals, but up the high end a bit more so they cut through more like what OA said (or use a different sample). You can clean this up by bringing some of the volume levels under control and EQing out frequencies that the parts don't need to occupy. Things get messy again as soon as those cymbals come in and things build up again later. Same advice as before. On the plus side, there are some cool, dark sounds going on here. Drum work at the end is nicely done, though it gets buried as soon as more things come in. Keep working on this one, it has a lot of potential.
  3. I'm not familiar with the originals, but it sounds like this needs quite a bit more development arrangement-wise. The track doesn't seem to be driving at anything. It just plays one theme, then the drums fade out, then come back in for the second theme with the same synths. You need to think about how you want to structure the song as a whole and then work on more dynamic variation. A little weird panning on this track. Not sure why the entired intro is panned hard left. Also, the objection samples seem more slapped on to the mix rather than acentuating anything or adding any value to the song. You might want to consider removing them completely. Either that, or save it for until it makes sense contextually in the song to have this sort of sample (i.e. as part of the climax of a big buildup or a transition between two sections of the song). Don't get too discouraged though, I just think you need to listen to the structure of songs in this genre to get an idea of how the piece should flow. I look forward to hearing your next version.
  4. Until DJP gets the site patched, maybe consider signing off your blog post with your name? It's very confusing right now
  5. This would normally belong in the Fruity Loops section of the Remixing forum, but I digress. Click the green light to the right of the instrument button to highlight an instrument. Right click the filter group button, click add to filter group, then type in the filter group name. There's also something in the top file menu i think, but I'm on the wrong computer to check. Sounds like you want all your drums going to the same mixer track. Bring up your newly created drum filter group. Click the green light next to the first sample. Hold shift and click the rest of the drums. Click on the mister track and hit ctrl + L (quick way to link an instrument to a mixer track). Now, put your compressor on that mixer track and you're done. You can also set the mixer track an instrument is assigned to by clicking on the instrument button on the step sequencer and changing the FX box on the top right of the window to the number of the mixer track.
  6. Nice mix that's stood the test of time. Kind of a chilled out version (at least I think so) of Under Logic. Very cool and creative use of acoustic guitar. Piano, of course, is classic McVaffe. So, who's the other mixer DJP refers to in the writeup?
  7. Page is broken for Ziwtra - Terranigma 'Blue (Shooting Star Mix) http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01251/ EDIT: and http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00538/
  8. Projects usually seem to start in the Requests forum to garner support and remixers before moving to Community, then to WIP forum once the songs are started. Also, http://www.ocremix.org/info/Album_Project_Guidelines.
  9. Just a few things I forgot to mention about this track: -Most of the sound effects were free from www.soundsnap.com - very cool site. -Voices obviously are from the n64 version of Star Fox. -If you want, try and pick out what's being said for the announcement at :49. -Elevator music is a song I did for the PRC 95 competition titled, well, Elevator. -Music at 2:28 is from the original Star Fox Corneria track with an extended intro
  10. Great, I remember back when this was in WIP before it was submitted and I'm glad you've revisited it. I remember that I commented on it before I was even into mixing myself and didn't hear any problems. When I saw the judges decision a few months later and then listened to the song again, though, I heard the clipping problems right off the bat. I guess a little bit of experience makes a big different. Nice intro, I still like it. I think the flute still needs a little bit of work. The attacks sound a little akward to me - like they are different samples sequenced together rather than someone playing the notes. I think it needs to be smoothed out a bit more. Also, is the panning moving around between notes? Once the beat comes in, I almost think you could pull the harpish sounding instrument back a bit. :55 - awesome 1:22 - same thing with the flute attacks from before 1:26 - might be on purpose, but that pad thing gets pretty loud and covers things for a few seconds. Not a big deal. Hmm, drums just stop suddenly at 4:13, I didn't quite understand that. Long subtractive outro. It's up to you if you want to keep it, but it seems unnecessary as it just seems to be original stuff not having to do with the OST. Still loving this track. Keep it up.
  11. Thanks guys, this was a lot of fun to make. And yeah, barrel roll had to be in there.
  12. Well, just go to the recycling bin and... oh, right Google-fu: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=deleted+recycle+bin
  13. Here's hopin I didn't kill ORC . I was actually thinking of making a bonus track for this, but didn't realize the deadline was already here. Someday I'll have to create the track that I envisioned this in.
  14. Why not just recruit some people to download the files from the links provided and upload them as "Anonymous contestant" on the compo page? Provided you can move it back to entry stage. Then again, maybe it's too much trouble. EDIT: Oh, it's still in entry mode. Are you cool with several of us each grabbing one of the songs and uploading?
  15. Hence the need to check her PM's . I didn't want to say it out loud in the thread...
  16. Ok, so I've been up a lot of hours the past few nights, trying to get the baby to go to sleep. This is the result : http://nutritious414.googlepages.com/CorneriaSpaceport.mp3 It's basically an attempt at creating an audio cutscene that takes place before the first mission of the original Star Fox (or Star Fox 64, either works). This took quite some time to finish and has a huge amount of sound effects. Not meant to be taken too seriously, it's just for fun. Enjoy. Edit: Either headphones or a setup where you can hear panning is recommended.
  17. Yeah, it does, but for some reason I can't get it to work. Does it need to be enabled or controlled separately somehow? Maybe I missed the fader for the line input on the volume control...
  18. The duck-jump thing (I've heard it called bum rush before, lol) actually can be done by hand... at least on the endless stairs. I played through sm64 a few weeks ago on my n64 and was able to get it to work on the last set of stairs to get to bowser with 52 stars.
  19. You get the warm, fuzzy feeling inside that you helped ocremix
  20. Ok, so I was backing up my sound files a couple weeks ago and most of the stuff related to this song mysteriously disappeared. Therefore, I'm starting over . New Track Death Wind OST I decided to take a new angle at the intro, incorporating the Death Wind track as a buildup - rather than generic chords. I think it fits the fzero style a lot better. I've just started working on the Win Theme part of the song, so it isn't very developed yet. I'm considering changing the orch hits to follow the pattern of the Title Screen OST, which may be a nice allusion.
  21. Ah, EMU 0404 already has 1/4 inputs. Good buy? EDIT: Yay for finding useful threads. Thanks guys.
  22. Yeah, I didn't mention it, but I tried lowering the volume as much as I could and dropping the input gain, but still couldn't get it working. I'll look around for a decent card. Thanks EDIT: Ok, I'm looking at some of the M-audio cards, but am a little confused on the inputs. I've got 1/4" outputs on my keyboard, but the cards I'm looking at have what looks like RCA inputs. Am I going to need some sort of converter cable?
  23. Ok, so I've got a Korg N1 and a Desktop with Sound Blaster Audigy (sigh). I'm trying to figure out the best/most cost effective way to directly record the sound output of the keyboard onto my computer. I've tried using a 1/4" to 1/8" cord from the output of the keyboard to the input/mic plug of the soundcard, but the signal is overwhelming the input of the card. I've also got a usb compressor mic that I can use to record the output from the external keyboard speakers, but the speakers aren't that great sound-quality wise and I'd like to have as clean a recording as possible. Any help would be appreciated.
