  1. This was a fun arrangement to hear as a huge fan of FF4 and its soundtrack, a really cool variation on the original. It made me smile.

The pacing was fairly deliberate, especially the chiptune sounds kept a fairly even energy level throughout. I can see where the comments about perhaps being a bit too steady come from, but I enjoyed the approach overall. I thought it never going absolutely crazy was a valid way and made for a particular listening experience.

  2. This was a good episode. "A Personal Note" is missing from the writeup above I believe. I quite appreciated the focus on a specific composer, it's an interesting viewpoint and a great addition to the lineup of segments. I found the use of Japanese honorifics in English a bit weird. That's a little thing. More importantly I didn't really know Kikuta's career path and realized I'm mostly aware of Secret of Mana and its follow-up, and it was nice to learn a bit more. Looking forward to the next installment!

  3. Really cool track! There's indeed a lot of mileage wrung out of the sources, and it goes by pretty fast, you just want to listen to it again. I absolutely love the fiddle, but there's cool trading licks between the sax as well, sweet usage of the skids sfx, cool Seeeegaaaa at the start.. what a great way to open up the album, and the track stand on its own as well!

  4. I liked the scale here, taking its time before the vocals hit, the lush soundscape and the kind of maximalist arrangement and all. I thought there might have been some off notes that didn't feel good to my ears, but I'll need to get a better listen and timestamp them and so to be sure. I thought the style went well with Katamari for sure. Lyrics are fun and they look kind of unsingable, but flow really well.

3:50-> there's the Katamari On the Rocks theme in major mode over minor mode backing (or something to that effect), which does sound icky to me.

0:41-> the transition from the intro to guitar strumming, the intro seems to be in minor mode and the next part in major mode - this is fine, but the problem to me is that the minor mode "tails" into the major mode (like reverb or sustained notes) and creates a conflict.

I think I'll give this a few more listens with proper headphones.

  5. For sure I'd like to get one of these. Star Fox 2 (and officially re-released Yoshi's Island, and Star Fox 1 actually) are really nice to see. It sounds like it's going to be a limited run though, so I doubt I'll have the opportunity to own one, just like with the NES Classic.

Fairly straightforward version of the OMF2097 title theme. The name (wip?) comes from the fact that this uses some C64 samples, though it doesn't sound that Commodore 64 in the end. Made during the free round of People's Remixing Compo in December.

Not intending to do a ton of more work on the track, but probably the bass mixing needs a good pass, and the very quiet pad might have some harmony issues with long release tails. If you have any feedback, please let me know! Intending to submit soon-ish.

  7. Good one once again! Loved to hear about Rakuen. The game sounds lovely.

Some more versions of the Monkey Island title theme:

Amiga is interesting to listen to, since it's MOD music and doesn't use a synth specific to a soundcard (or n square waves), or CD audio, but has four channels to play whatever samples the arranger loaded up. Nice lo-fi sample quality too.

Atari ST sounds like something between the beeper/Game Blaster versions, with actual polyphony but less channels and mono.

Macintosh version sounds kinda synth-y but has a nice noisy sound quality. I assume this is Mac Classic II (judging by video title). I don't know much about Mac sound, apparently it's 8-bit samples in 22 kHz sample rate (and mono).. I wonder where the sounds come from, my guess is this is MIDI with in-system samples?

  8. Very enjoyable longform symphonic rock track, good performances to add some extra life into it. There's a small harmonic wart with the organ at 1:47 when transitioning between parts. That's about the only thing I personally object with the track, I see a bunch of production crits but my ears were not bothered by the production. I like the variety of the instrumentation and keeping everything fresh for the whole duration is an cool achievement. It really sounds quite effortless actually. The track also has a very strong sense of forwards drive, which is nice, it constantly feels like it's going somewhere. It's also interesting that the parts do not differ greatly from another, and since everything else is clicking, this emphasizes the sense of forward momentum.

  9. Really good episode once again. Between the Lines was just superb, really well structured and based and something really clicked for me with the "these changes work because of shared tone and the rhythmic ostinato" (heavily paraphrased) conclusion, I feel like I really got something out of it why some "weird" harmonic progressions seem to work and others don't. It was even a dramatic climax structure-wise in the segment, well done! :D

  10. Really loved this one, from concept to execution. Maaan, I feel like firing up the original SNES port for nostalgia AND to check out the speed of action.. I think the reinterpretation here to the new groove is very cool and more than sufficient from what I expect from an OC ReMix.. there would have been some "design space" for more variation in textures / instrumental palette / density of the arrangement - everything is pretty much playing all the time throughout as far as "thickness" of the arrangement is considered, a section in the middle where the soundscape wasn't quite as filled out could've made the arrangement "breathe" a bit more, but I'm not really complaining, it's goooood. Reminds me a bit of YMO's version of Firecracker, probably a lot because of the pentatonic scale but also tempo and some of the instrumentation. Cool debut!

  11. Wonderful episode. Amy brought a sense of calm wisdom to the interview, I was impressed with that, and you had a good conversation both ways. I think I got something out of the interview for my own work, but it was also just great listening to you guys talk. Score Scholar was great as well. I could've done with a little less gushing about the excellence and importance of the source tune etc - that I've all heard before - but once it got into the meat of the segment, the theoretical analysis of the piece, it was super exciting and enlightening. Will obviously loves this stuff as well as VGM, and it's a wonderful combination. You've done a lot of good episodes but this did a lot that I personally loved. Thanks everyone.

  12. I'll add to the pile: I've started all of PS1-4 and played each of them quite far, but I haven't finished any of them. (I *did* finish PS Gaiden, which is far worse than any of the mainline games though, but I played that on the go - plus it's quite easy).
