  1. Very nice, at first I was concerned that this source has been overused (kinda like Super Metroid's Red Brinstar area), but you've done something very unique, and I really think the vocals so far are great. Definitely different enough from The Megas' version (theirs is more rock) to stand on its own. Be curious to see what else you come up with for this piece, I think this is going to be "one to watch" for a while.
  2. Holy crap, old post, but anyway, just as long as we're on the subject, I was thinking to myself the other day that now that The Black Mages have gone through the bulk of the boss themes or combat-themed, upbeat tracks, it might be interesting to see what they can do with some of the more regular tracks. There was some of this on the second album, with Matoya's Cave for example, and I always thought that turned out well, would be interesting if they decided to do a 4th album (got no indication that that was the case by checking their wikipedia page, not that that's the end all be all of information). Even though most people seem to have hated it, I liked their take on FF6's opera... it wouldn't be The Black Mages without some ripping guitar at some point
  3. Well this is nothing short of epic, everyone I've showed this too has laughed out loud at various points, me most certainly included! I think the parts with the princess and Matoya were my favorite parts, just... ridiculous but hilarious .
  4. Man, got to this thread way too late, everything I wanted to say has already been mentioned! Let's see here, I can actually think of a few that I didn't see mentioned: Lighthouse (Myst-style first person adventure game, great story and atmosphere, I still want to go back and finish this game someday) Ultima & Ultima Underworld Series (depending on how far back you go in the series, these games are somewhere between extremely old school or late-dos era) Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (First-person adventure game, surprisingly scary game, which goes out of it's way to illustrate the various ways in which your character can die) Warlords 2 (Turn-based strategy game, with some bad-ass voiceovers "Greetings Warlord!" "Farewell Warlord, we shall meet again!") Legend of Kyrandia series (I wasn't that into this, but it was a high quality adventure series, sort of like Quest for Glory) Aside from that I can only echo what a lot of people have already: Quest for Glory 1-4 Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure, aka Little Big Adventure (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, still rather good even by today's standards in some regards) Prince of Persia 1&2 Lemmings, Oh No More Lemmings, etc Commander Keen Series Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny Doom 1/2/Final Doom (although realistically, you'd be better off getting one of the modernized launchers for this such as jDoom and playing with much nicer effects) Monster Bash Series Halloween Harry (not sure if this was a series) And if you want to go really old school, here are some other ideas: Captain Comic (old-school platformer with good play-control, check out my speedrun for a sample of gameplay) Castle (or "Castle Adventure" as I think it was officially called, basically you explore an ascii-castle using basic text commands to look around and find things, with a little fighting thrown in for good measure.) The Bard's Tale 3-Demon (you could say this was a really, really, really early FPS if you wanted to) EGABomb EGATrek EGARoids (as in Asteroids, not Steroids ) QBert Centipede Amazing Maze Kong ("David's Kong" might have been it's official name, Donkey Kong-style game)
  5. Good luck, boy would it be nice to see this on the front page! This latest version has changed things a fair amount as well, some new work with the drums at the start, the tones are a little different throughout the piece as well, but like all previous versions, I think you've only continued to move it into a deeper, secluded atmosphere.
  6. Seems we have quite a few requests for "relaxing," or "peaceful," mixes on these forums, as usual, I'm going to take this time to plug Brinstar Bonsai Garden by Red Tailed Fox, it's Brinstar, at some dark jazz club! http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01473/ Follow that up with Midnight at Club Corel (Red Tailed Fox and Shnabubla) from the FFVII: VotL album, and you'll be in pretty good shape, hell, throw in Hyrdophone Breakdown (JigginJonT) while you're at it.
  7. Wow, such a large number of themes here, and yet somehow it's all woven together in a way that makes perfect sense, at least to a longtime OCRemix listener . I really liked the organs, and bassy synth that gets a little higher and higher as the song goes on, with the piano finally adding an offsetting, peaceful element towards the end. Not always a fan of merger mixes but this one is money, and I can't wait to hear more!
  8. I'd totally do Obsession if I had any remixing skills, which I of course do not ;x. But I'd be happy to promote this project if you have any custom sigs for non remixers or whatever!
  9. This is pretty cool, I was actually only familiar with the source for W&W2, but I checked out the source you provided for this one and like what you have so far. Always been a fan of turning simple songs into something a little bit more involved., it may be a little repetitive at this point, but I do like the way it ends.
  10. It was nice to see some more detail in the combat system, not that I actually understood what was going on since it was in Japanese, but good to get a bit more of a feel for how it plays out with the various options and stuff. In other words, it was nice to see that there really is a game under all of the CSs we've seen so far, reminds me of FFVIII as well, in a good, not having to draw 100 times a battle kind of way . As for Versus, I find it hard to say too much about that unless it's been confirmed that it too will be a full-on, FF style rpg. For all we know at this point it could be another Dirge of Cerberus, although either way, it *looks* like it will be very cool too (not like we have to choose between them if they both end up being good games).
  11. Could've sworn I saw a WIP thread with someone working on this song recently, was either this or one of the other Lufia 2 battle songs.
  12. This is another one that I'd love to see revived if you ever get around to it (hopefully you already have!). I think that, unlike so many "vs" mixes, you actually had a pretty good idea and combined the melodies well, and with a little cleanup could have a very cool mix on your hands here. Think I already said that earlier, but a little more motivation never hurt.
  13. Spending time in the WIP forum is actually a lot of fun, at least for me. My comments are rarely technical but I'd like to think they had at least some small helpful effect on people, if nothing else but to say "hey I listened to that, and x part was cool, you might be onto something here!" among other things. Most of us here have to have a pretty major passion for video game music, and it can be very interesting to see what other kinds of ideas people come up with, whether they be destined for ocr fame or not. That and, when a WIP you commented on does finally get posted, you can't help but feel good, like maybe, you had like .0000000001% of an effect on how it turned out, or, you know, maybe more . Then you won't feel out of place giving it a review when all is said and done too!
  14. lol my brother and I have said that many many times, slightly different wording maybe
  15. Here's a good one (SMB2) that I honestly remember from when I was like 5 years old or something like that. Probably the only NES game commercial that I remember, I don't know why I remember it, but when I saw this thread title, I figured I'd see if I could find it.
  16. Woo more Tree Hopping! This is officially the WIP I have followed for the longest time now so I'm glad to see it's still alive. It's still basically the same song, it just sounds even "deeper" now, if that makes any sense. When the percussion comes in this time, it sounds more natural, as well as throughout the song, it really blends together nicely and doesn't distract as much as it did in the previous versions. I think that was one of the main concerns of some others, not really positive but I'll keep cheering for this one, you have to be close now!
  17. Pretty repetitive, but also very unique. I think you succeeded with making it sound like an Enya song, and the level of production seems pretty high to me throughout. I'd say you have a decent chance aside from the fact that it really sounds like the same song all throughout, not sure how much of a role that will play if any.
  18. man this made me laugh, definitely listened to a lot of that song over at a friend's house while playing earlier snes games like SMW and Mario Kart .
  19. Ok, so I finally got the Captain Comic speedrun up on youtube for anyone who was interested. Sort of off-topic, but honestly, I think if I posted this alone it would be buried under 100 posts by the end of the day . Going to try a couple things here, I know you can embed videos on the forums here but it isn't immediately obvious to me how, so the URL for the 2-part playlist is here. If someone could PM me the tag that is used on these particular forums for embedding, that would be appreciated.
  20. I have the last... 5 or so WIPs or something, was always hoping to see this one finished but it's been quite a while since any updates. I'll see if I can get the latest one up for you if the old links aren't working.
  21. This is really something else, it's pure chaos, yet logical as far as the progression with the SMW soundtrack. Once the MMX comes in I'd say the rails are right off, but that didn't mean it wasn't very entertaining! As far as the Thriller and NGGYU references, pure gold!
  22. This worked pretty well for me, always liked the source and your take on it seems pretty solid. It's definitely slower, and trying to evoke the setting on a grander scale, which I think it mostly succeeds at. There was a part in the middle that I expected might be building to something big but instead things quieted down and you took the piano route, which is fine in my book, it could have gone either way. Overall it's a very low key mix, and I like the way it slowly faded out with the signature prelude on the piano, very nice touch. I will never proclaim to be an expert but I think you're either very close, or ready to submit.
  23. I'm going to have to go way off the map on this one. Don't take this the wrong way but reading some of these posts about people playing snes games at like age 4 is making me feel very old, and I'm "only" 26. But anyway, back in the day, it took my parents a really really long time to come around to the idea that my brother and I weren't going to be happy until we had an nes, so we had to find something to do in the meantime. What we did have, was computer games, only problem was, we wouldn't always have a computer, my dad would often bring his home from work over the weekend, or sometimes (and this is the more vivid memory) he would ask if we wanted to come with him into work on the weekends, so that we could spend virtually an entire day playing our games on some random person at his office's computer. One time I can even recall that I was playing something on a guy's computer and the guy actually ended up coming in to work on that saturday as well, and my dad had to come over and explain why some 6-8 year old was playing video games in his cubicle. Another thing I can remember is that my dad showed me how to change directories and execute programs in DOS at a VERY young age (around 3-4) so that I could switch between the games I was playing without having to bug him every time I wanted to switch. This no doubt was part of the start of my career path, as I am now a computer support person/systems adminstrator/whatever the hell you want to call it kind of guy. As far as what games, well, basically ancient pc games, Castle, 3-Demon, Centipede, Packman, EGABomb, EGATrek, Othello, Breakout, some weird ass fishing game called Basstour that we didn't even remotely understand was about fishing and instead pretended was some sort of boating adventure game, and probably the most memorable, Captain Comic. I actaully completed a speedrun of Captain Comic over DOSBox recently just for fun (and yes I will get it up on Youtube!), and it sure was funny to finish a game that I used to spend hours with in a whole 20 minutes. Course I am still an avid PC gamer now, with games like the Quest for Glory series, Wolfenstein 3-D, and Doom all high on the list of old influences, but if you want to talk about memorable moments, I don't think you can beat the older days at my dad's office. Eventually we would finally get our nes, just a year or so before the snes came out, but it was certainly better late than never, definitely one of the best christmases I can remember. The system had been out for so long that we already knew what games we needed, SMB1-3, Zelda 1 and 2, Metroid... you get the idea. Course it wouldn't be long before we'd be exposed to the snes, and I will always remember wanting to tag along with my mom to Costco to play the snes that they left set up for people to demo, for pretty much the entire duration of the shopping trip. I knew we had to get Super Mario World, it was so amazing on so many levels at the time, but having only recently gotten the nes, it was going to be a difficult road. After that, my mom (as you might guess) had no intention of getting us an snes, but my brother and I took it upon ourselves to do whatever it took to get one asap, which in this case, was getting a paper route so that we could afford to buy it ourselves. Another great day when we finally got that, I think SMW was the only game we had for several months, but it was enough. After that we'd get into the truly epic games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and of course, Final Fantasy "II" and "III" which I wouldn't dare to refer to as anything other than FF4 and 6 now, but hey, back then, who knew. I don't think any gaming series will have more influence on me than Final Fantasy, and FF4 was the starting point for me as I never got into the original on the nes. Anyway I guess the moral of the story is that I always seem to get these things late, never had a PSX, eventually finally got a PS2 (thank god for backward compatibility) so I was able to fill in the blanks, and as you might guess, don't have a PS3 yet but will most likely look into getting one sometime before FFXIII comes out. Well, Wall-o-text, but I certainly enjoyed reading some of the other stories on here so I hope this doesn't scare too many people off .
  24. Nice trance mix, I don't always like trance mixes since they have a tendency to get "distracted," from the source, but I was actually fine with the long buildup for this one, that's just how trance is, for the most part. I'd say what has me curious in the end is why this is considered an FF6 remix. I mean I guess you had to choose a game, but as far as I can tell, the Prelude has pretty well been shared between just about every FF game, and I'm just not sure what about this ties it specifically to FF6, and not say, 4, or even 1.
