  1. Damn, listening to both the NES and version of the song, they're really miles apart, when it come to the flavor they give. Yeah, I'd love to see this get remixed, as well.
  2. Your setup is immaculate, bro. The production is top freakin' notch, here. As much as I'd love to say it's perfect, though (it's pretty close, but... I'm picky as hell), I think it has one or two things about it that could use a little work. Everyone has mentioned it's conservative nature. Probably no need for me to mention it again The lead at :56 bugs me - it just doesn't belong to this soundscape at all, so next to the rest of the track it's grating. It might be the warm tone to it that gets to me (the rest of the track is warm, so it fights for space), it might be the synth design (it's like an 80's instrument thrown into a modern soft jazz arrangement), or maybe something else (possibly some fuzz, though I'm listening on some crappy headphones right now), but the sound of that instrument doesn't go well with the rest of the track. Why am I focusing so damn much on a single instrument? Because your track sounds perfect otherwise. When everything sounds perfect one's mind tends to focus on imperfections more intently, like an uncanny valley. So yeah, I love this arrangement, I could easily see it on OCR with the proper attention given to the arrangement. I'd love to hear something so close to perfection hit everything perfectly, so I hope you take a look at the one offending synth. Yeah, awesome track.
  3. Haaaaa, that's some good stuff, man. Pretty high quality, too; surprised it hasn't caught on yet.
  4. Oooh shit, look who's here. Glad to have you back with us, man.
  5. Closing this due date out with a proverbial whimper, but most everyone it referred to has either sent in something to show their continued interest or have already progressed significantly enough where I don't feel I need to kick them in the rear anymore. Looks like Bahamut is rolling back in now, so I suppose it's about time to get in touch with him.
  6. OH YEAH, deadlines today for the newbies. Hope I see some moar stuff tomorrow (though I've gotten quite a bit already, I'm always happy to see more ).
  7. This was in the works for the first compo, but it doesn't look like it got off the ground. BTW, you should also check out the other two compos in the same vain, and be sure to spread the word. Also, welcome to OCR
  8. He's easily forgotten because he couldn't contribute a track. Yeah, he's someone that I'd have loved to have seen in more of in this compo.
  9. I would've liked to have seen more Gario in this compo.
  10. I suspect SonicThHedgog. It is in line with his sense of humor. ... alright, I'm just saying that because of the similarity of their names.
  11. ... well shit, the other games look great, but I can't DL them (all the links in my URL are dead ). Seems they closed shop before I got wind of it. Why am I always late to the party when it comes to these things? *grumble* Oh well, I paid for the five games, so I suppose I shouldn't complain about missing out on the other seven.
  12. I'm not complaining. I'd just like to know what the official stance on it is, that's all.
  13. Xarnax, I don't know if the old deadline still applies, since rerolls have been a bit mixed up and such. I suppose it wouldn't hurt me to get started on my mix now anyway, but are the September deadlines still official, or will they be pushed back for the people that rerolled?
  14. ... Man, that's terrible. I suppose the show could offer it's availability to other sites such as Gametrailers or Screwattack, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, I don't know what to say. This whole past year's been legal hell for my own family, so I feel for you. Best of luck with your show, man - it's something I've looked forward to for the past year, so I'd hate to see it drop off the planet
  15. What I meant was I don't think my computer could handle this new generation of games. It struggles with Borderlands, as it is, even on it's lowest graphic settings (though that one is, fortunately, still playable). I'll get over it, though - one day I'll be able to afford either a home console and/or a computer with enough power to actually get into this generation of games. X-com, Deus Ex, Diablo III... I better start saving up.
  16. *sigh* I want this. Unfortunately I don't have the hardware to play it. Ah well, I'll just play the original again.
  17. I just got through this game, so what better time to give this a proper review. Let's give this a whirl... The sound quality is pretty good if this is your first time mixing and arranging music - your friend Anterrior must be a pretty good teacher. The actual mixing is a bit random, though. The purpose of mixing is to place the important elements in the front while the textures and such lay further in the background. The feeling I get from this is that some of the important elements are being thrown behind the textures a bit too often. The melody is presented well at 1:03, so you should probably try to get the other melodic elements to match those relative levels more consistently. The actual arrangement sounds pretty close to the original, save for some of the neat effects you placed throughout it. The minor harmonies you mesh with the original melody, though, don't mesh well. Either be prepared to adjust the melody so it matches the minor harmony you sometimes have in place or have the harmony match the key that the melody is in. The clash is jarring sometimes. Glad to see that Bowser's Inside Story is getting some love in here. Keep at it.
  18. Oh hey, man. Glad to hear you'll be back soon. Hopefully you'll be glad to see where the projects have been going, so far.
  19. This is... gorgeous. It's sending chills down my spine. I love the empty, hollow soundscape. The otherworldly sound produced from the intro is great. When the meat of the track comes into play I feel that the mixing clutters a little bit, and the drum beat is somewhat dry and unfitting, but other than that it really evokes a neat sound. I really like this one. If this is but a taste of what is on the non-OCR anniversary album then I can't wait for tomorrow, man. This is awesome.
  20. The sound of this remix is awesome. I love the glitch you've got going on here. The mixing is a little on the strange side, sometimes - it's crystal clear for some things (like the tick sounds in the drums) while it seems a little muddier in other areas (some of the square wankery toward the end, for example). Clarity with every sound will help with this genre, and you show that you can do it. (I know some of the less clear sounds are intentional, by the way, like the high & low cut instrument in the beginning, which was awesome). I hear the connection of the song in this, but the direction it seems to be going right now seems to be a little too liberal. A single texture and wankery over it won't cut it if you're shooting for OCR. The use of the source in the beginning was great - throughout the track you'll need more stuff like that if you want a shot. I agree with Rockos about the bass drum - it needs some more power behind it. Compression & sidechaining the bass will be your friend, I suspect. The primary drum pattern gets pretty boring pretty quickly. There are some really cool details that you have going on throughout the drum track, but the bass/hat/snare/hat undercurrent is lame. Don't be afraid to break that pattern up. I really like the approach you've got for this. Transposing the melodies like you have is very effective when you use it, and the glitching is great. You just need some more melody and themes incorporated - I hear what you have going, but I don't think it'll be enough, yet. Can't wait to see what you do with the next section of the song.
  21. I love Super Metroid, and the handheld games were pretty good, as well. Plenty of people love the Prime series, but for the time I played it I just...couldn't get into it, for some reason. Ah well. Favorite moment would be in Super Metroid - when I discovered a way to beat the game without getting the Varia suit... it takes a shitload of luck manipulation, but it can be done.
  22. I don't need to comment on Sam's awesome abilities. I will comment, though, on the upcoming 25th anniversary album that IGN didn't comment on. I mean really... ... oh all right, I'll comment on Sam as well - he's a badass at arranging VG music. He's also a badass at chiptune music. He's just... badass. The violinist was also pretty rockin', too - some of the percussion techniques were very well placed.
  23. Gario

I also saw you on the frontpage roughly the same time, so I think a double congrats is in order.

    :D

    Yup, it's awesome.

  24. Just popping this up for the newer members - I haven't forgotten about the due dates. The next one is when Bahamut is coming back from his boot camp experience (I think), so it's there more or less to give him a nice 'Welcome Back' surprise. Oh yes, I'm not above laying on the guilt to get people workin'. Yup. August 12th, it's a week away. Let's see some magic.
  25. I agree - it's hard to pick favorites this round. That's why I just picked myself for first, second and third place*. *not really In all seriousness, though, my favorites from this round actually are not the professionally produced tracks (though they're awesome, don't get me wrong), which is highly unusual. There's so much goodness coming from this compo that I don't know how PRC200 will be able to compete.
