Well, halc, you've gone and done it again. This is a totally chill version of the source - I like how you maintained the eerie version of the original. This screams halc!, and that's a very good thing. I know you've already done it, but, please fix the ending. Otherwise, I think it's submittable.

Whoa! SMG hate! Who'da thunk it? In my opinion, it's the second/third best Mario game ever made, and it did a great job of replacing the bitter taste of FLUDD (at least, I hope that's FLUDD) from Super Mario Sunshine. Galaxy threw platforming on its head - it offers the same 'impossible last few stars' that Super Mario 64 did, which gives it replay value, and the physics I found worked out. The music was also Godly - most importantly, Galaxy feels right. It's a natural successor to SM64 - pretty, interesting, and revolutionary. At least, that's what I think.

Umm... First off, this made my night - I got a mental image of Jimmy T. from WarioWare dancin' down at the Kremlin Discotheque and I was sold. Definite, DEFINITE props for originality. The wavy sounds that pop in at the beginning are a bit too...wavy. Too much frequency-hopping for my personal taste - maybe control that a bit? I think it really wants to be a natural-sounding guitar, but it's stuck wiggling about. The sound-clips are classy to the max - to be as neutral as I can, this piece gets a lot of charm from them. If you're aiming to submit this, you could probably squeak by on originality - then again, because you're using the cap theme underneath all the time, you could get the 'too-conservative' stamp. As it is, I bloody like it - it's fresh, original, and charming. Some instrumentation (the synths) need a bit of rework, but this is totally submittable with a few modifications. Great work, man! And thanks for making my 15-minute writing break random and awesome.

If this counts, everything in I Wanna Be the Guy. Play it for about 5 seconds and you'll understand EXACTLY what I mean. Especially The Guy. Holy Hannah...

Fair enough - thanks, folks! I did get .FLAC to work with VLC - I still don't hear much of a difference (there is something to it, but I dunno what it is and the test was hardly blind), but if it works for you, more power to ya! Not gonna lie, though - finding .FLAC torrents ruins my torrent hunts. I also realized that this is totally off-topic and I ought to have made a new thread for it - mea culpa. This may sound heretical, but - why FLAC? It's the single most inconvenient formatting I've ever seen. It doesn't play with anything, it's massive, it doesn't burn, it doesn't sync, and it's really not a great audio boost, so far as I know. Listening to the two (and I may sound like a stupid for this), I can't tell them apart. So, unless someone out there has a mecha-massoton of speakers chilllin' by their compy (and I'm sure that someone exists), what's the point? I'm not saying don't release it in .FLAC, I'm just not-too-sure what the point is of .FLAC at all.

As you may know, I'm a totally old-school gamer. In the home, I've got: - A NES - A SNES - An N64 - A Gamecube - A PS2 - A Genesis - A Master System - A Dreamcast - An Atari 2600; and - A DS, GBA and GB (not sure it works, but it doesn't matter 'cause GBA does) My favourite games are platformers and RPGs; I'm partial to Nintendo (obviously...) and I love the Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man (Megaman?), Bomberman, Pokemon, Mother (yes, I know...one game plus a fan sub...), Tales of, Double Dragon, F-Zero, DKC (+64 - the rest wasn't so hot) and a host of other games and series that would last forever if I listed 'em all. In fact, I'm forgetting series, too. Outta curiousity, what sorta systems do you have? Got any recommendations for consoles/games I should have? Post your stuff and likes - I'm hoping I can hear of a few new series and games and stuff - and who knows? Even I could join the new generation!

I'm kinda stuck wrapping my head around that one, too. It sounds like there's more political intriguing going on with the New Californian Republic coming back and all. I don't know if anyone else has thought of this, but a Fallout USA would be totally awesome. Think about it: you could travel to any US city, spreading GECK-based hope to the places that've been badly poisoned or bringing down the hammer and robbing places blind. I think that'd be so awesome - I am aware of the differences, but WoW's world is huge. Of course, to store that on one computer isn't exactly a likelihood.

WHAT! Another Lufia!! I rented that when I was a kid - wowzers! I only played Lufia II, but I'm already stoked for this one! What system is it for? I may need a modern console after all...

Treat it like 0AD - it never happened. Go from 1999 to 2001. Then, tell fables of the missing ReMix - ReMix 2000, the legendary ReMix which, when played backwards at a slow speed, tells you the answer to the Ultimate Question: why do hot-dogs come in 12-packs and buns in 8-packs? My bet's on a djp mix of epic proportions. Which is epic. Either that or a huge compilation of a host of epic ReMixers - ReMix 2000 is actually an album!

This is an odd bump, but whatever - it must be said. This is a magnificent mix. A ready favourite for wandering to school on cold winter days...Lotsa good times on this one. There's nothing really to complain about or even say - just let its majesty unfurl on you. You'll love it - downbeat-ish with a solid, solid core. Definitely recommended.

Okay - all in all, this is neat. I like the concept, but I think you're putting too much in the soundscape. It seems cluttered and you're making overtones you don't want to be making (I don't think). Maybe try shedding some parts - for example, do you really need the orchestra hits? In my opinion, this piece SCREAMS to be ambient/downbeat. This approach gives you two big benefits: 1) you're splitting from the theme, giving you more OCR chances (though you need to do a bit more original work and do some volume work), and 2) you're making less work for yourself when you polish. This may sound like I'm dictating style - I apologize if that's how it comes off, because that's not how I mean it. In my experience, though, the more you have to work with, the tougher it is to balance. Less can be more, especially in a piece like this. This has serious potential in it - like Gario said, for three months, this is EPIC. Keep working on it - if you wanna keep it as is, just do some volume adjustments and stuff. Probably the best suggestion I can give you is to go Tubing. Find a pile of electronica artists you've not heard of (Colorpulse, Boards of Canada, Bochum Welt, µ-Ziq, Bola, Brian Eno - just throwing names to give you a hand), then search 'em up. See if someone really catches you and work with it. Mimicry makes your own style. Hope that helps! Great work, man!

Yeah...the other thing too is the controller. The big beef I have with the FCTwin and friends is that they use their own BS controller, which in my mind feels like using something from Dollar Zone to play. Totally not cool. I'unno 'bout this one. If it has the Genesis controller ports, re-released cartridges (*coughWILYWARScough) and the Wiimote bit isn't turbosuck, it might be worth it. Otherwise...with respect to Sega, they just aren't a console company any more.

Oh, when I write music, I'm a character. Last night, I recorded the sound caused when my apartment has a different pressure than the outside (I put the A/C on and opened the windows) - it's a neat whistle. None of my stuff is OCR-worthy, and I'd be ashamed to waste the judges' collective times with it. I just fiddle with it - I take the sounds, mix 'em together, and see what happens. By the way, the sound of a breeze can be mixed to another sound. I recorded a few leaf crunches in the fall and stuck that to the wind - it's really a neat percussion...sadly, it died with my old computer. In time, you'll get back to it. Don't make it for anyone but you - I mean, I consider my music really personal, and I don't like sharing it because it's so simple and my talent so limited. Just do it for you!

Whoa. Nicely done, OA! I was in a really bad mood today (bad class and worse argument with a good friend), so I came here just to write a pissy thread. Instead, I found this. It reminds me of when my Animal Crossing town was one of the more important things I had to worry about... In short, you've written a smooth, recognizable, and soothing tune that harkens back to easier days. You saved OCR from a pissed-off angry thread, and, if possible, you've heightened even further my respect for your musical abilities. I'd say that's a pretty good song, right there. Thanks, man!

Personally, I write music from what I whistle and hear in nature. Basically, I always start composing by writing the soundscape - the sounds which define the tune. Then again, I always write ambient music, so...I tend to wander about with a recorder when I'm in the mood to write music. I just walk, hands-in-pockets-style, and I listen when I get home to what I've got. I know that sounds like a retarded John Cage-esque method, but it's good by me. I just take sounds that I like - a good gust of wind, some birds, those shutters on triangular bill-boards... That probably doesn't work for other genres, though. Sorry...
