I third/fourth/fifth any suggestion of Super Mario RPG. Damn that was something.

I don't know why but I strongly feel this would work better as a separate project outside of OCR... at least in the initial stages, especially if it allows any old person to tag songs. But in imagining how complicated of a system I'm suggesting, it might be a good idea to integrate. I would imagine it would be a smart move to first create a short (50-100) list of descriptors that you can tag a song with, such as: Genre (rock, metal, jazz, "pop", rap, new age, techno, trance, R&B, classical/orchestral, classical/piano) Instruments/vocals (piano, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, oboe, ukulele, flute, cello, timpani, drums, synth (should be various types i suppose), male vocal, female vocal, chorus) Lyrical/non-lyrical Length (1:00-1:59, 2:00-2:59, 3:00-3:59, 4:00+, etc) Other various descriptors (chill, upbeat, relaxing, reviving, angry-with-your-significant-other-so-you-drive-80-miles-an-hour-with-this-song-playing-on-the-car-stereo-system-and-you-scream-along-with-this-song) That way, the tags will be limited in quantity and thus accessible, constructive, and unique (no repeats). New tags could be proposed and ratified through a simple, democratic poll (maybe even on this forum). With a well-crafted interface system thing with the song database, interesting statistics could be taken on the songs to see how commonly, say, the piano is used in remixes or what is the most commonly used genre in remixes.... Meh. Anything would be cool though.

Or if you have a PS controller to USB device, but...all the ones i've tried have pretty obvious delay issues. -

College: Both university and community

Great, now I'm to be likened to some black man on the telly, eh? Don't you (we) have critiquing to be doing? #1 is UCLA, #2 is Cal State Fullerton. -
College: Both university and community
SoulinEther replied to Darth Lime's topic in General Discussion
It's strange that for me the main requirement for college, after already having finished applying to the colleges I thought I wanted to get into, was that my school be small so that I would have many different opportunities to be very personally involved with others and not be a number. It was for that very reason that I chose a small college in Connecticut over California's biggest public university. ..lol, then my life got all changed up and i'm attending california's second biggest public university (and i'm not even dorming). Moral of the story: apply to many colleges/university of different shapes and sizes, both local and afar, because you never know what you're going to want. And Yale, Princeton and Stanford are hard to get into -

I filled out my FAFSA in January.. it was due in what, March? I didn't apply to any JCs/Community Colleges but every college gave me a financial aid package to work with. I am assuming you filled yours out then, though, on time.Make sure you're going to get your money, whether it be Pell grant / state grants / subsidized or unsub loans. Call/speak with your school's financial aid office and ask them to confirm that they have received your information from the FAFSA and that they have a financial aid package available for you - you gotta be more proactive about your education in college than you were in high school. And if college hasn't started yet, you're going to have to make payments on tuition probably after you sign up for your classes, but if you are supposed to receive financial aid, and it's enough to cover the cost of attendance, you probably won't have to pay anything and the school will just take the financial aid money instead. Community college eh? It's probably pretty cheap, but if your Pell grant, State grants, and scholarships (if any) don't cover the complete cost of attendance, and you've been given the opportunity to get them, you have to fill out some forms (online for me) for the Stafford / Perkins / Federal PLUS loans before you can get them, and there might be a short waiting period before you'll get the money, so make sure you're in communication with your school's financial aid office so you don't get shafted monetarily. One of my friends wasn't too proactive about her financial aid and maintained a past due balance (for tuition) with a Cal State university for like 3 weeks after she enrolled in her classes and ended up getting all her classes dropped, even though she knew (and I think the school knew too) she was supposed to get financial aid to cover the cost of tuition. Moral of the story: take the initiative and find out before it's too late. Well, what do you think will be the biggest shock for you? What are your expectations for college student life? -
I ride around on a tricycle with those big box speakers attached to the back, playing mostly mariachi music really loudly to drive everyone in a half-mile vicinity crazy.

WCT - The Writing Competition Thread [Short Story Results]
SoulinEther replied to Imagist's topic in Competitions
+1.I just dropped my math class. AND IT WAS FOR YOU TWO MR. MAVERICK AND HAJILE. *sniff* Nah it was for more time and less stress. I swear I'll get around to it. Oh and, i had one more point to make.. .oh yeah If nobody is going to be taking over this competition, can this last competition be Freeform, since it allows for both short stories AND poetry (and other genres), and .. it's sort of .. well, enough of my rambling, what do you think of the matter? -
And +1 to my post count. Happy birthday(s) (would that constitute a plurality if it is indeed the same day?)
-
Damn, with that in mind, I have no need to worry. Thanks mang. Now if only I would work on those critiques - the survival of my offspring and my offspring's offspring might not even make it to that subx3nuclear hell if I don't.

What if your body massaged itself from the inside? Our existence would have to be redefined.

Yeah Hydrogen is pretty damn neat IMO.

Even though I'd get to live, wouldn't it be futile since once they're all dead the surviving men can't procreate anyway?

Do you also worry about the genocide taking place in the world as we speak? (edit: that's not to say you shouldn't)

Two questions: 1. Can it handle Shnabubula's awesome NES sound? 2. Will it blend?

Meh, don't know the exact details about it but it has a sort of system for connecting sequencing programs to audio sample programs to audio recording programs. I mean to say I use it, but I can't exactly describe it to you.You may consider installing Ubuntu Studio, or at least the Ubuntu Studio (meta)package(s) and stuff, because they contain lots of video/audio/graphics editing and making programs. Just so you know, a metapackage isn't really a software package, instead what it does is it depends upon / links to other actual software packages (like in the case of Ubuntu Studio's package, I think it includes like the GIMP, Ardour, Cinelerra, Kino, etc). The main metapackage for ubuntustudio is ubuntustudio-desktop. However, you can (maybe should) individually download it in pieces - ubuntustudio-audio, ubuntustudio-plugins, ubuntustudio-video, ubuntustudio-graphics. Install them from the command line/terminal (sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio) for the fastest, easiest installation. The ubuntustudio-audio package includes a TON of programs and libraries and such - check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/PackageList for a complete list of programs and http://ubuntustudio.org/ for ... well, that isn't so useful but it is the website for it. The ubuntustudio-plugins includes some audio and i think video effects plugins that you might try. ubuntustudio-graphics gives you Inkscape, a vector graphics design program, which is somewhat sophisticated (but I don't think nearly as sophisticated as Illustrator, though, in all fairness, I only tried Illustrator for a few days and I didn't really get a chance to (not) appreciate it). So.. yeah.

Things That Piss You Off When Recording
SoulinEther replied to TheSnowStorm's topic in General Discussion
I think that it would be kinda funny if, one day while seriously recording something and you get interrupted, you stop singing and explode and rant about some *expletive expletive* piece of *expletive* truck and that *expletive expletive expletive* fucking dog and then upload it to the internets and come here and post a link to it. Just a little funny. -
You'll probably need to set up a JACK server (not that hard) for low-latency audio, just install a few packages from the repos (qjackctl will install JACK and a frontend to manage it simply).

WIP-Releases: Feedback, Discussion + ?s
SoulinEther replied to Liontamer's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The Ubuntu forums (running on vBulletin as well) have a "thanking" system in place for people who can solve other people's problems, and every user has a total count of "Thanks" they get from people, listed alongside post count. I'm not sure if this was coded by the Ubuntu web staff or if it's part of vBulletin or if it's a plugin that you can purchase. But it shouldn't be too hard to implement I imagine... maybe. I'm not too sure lol. Should anyone be able to "vote" for the best critiques in any thread? or should it only be the OP - the person with the WIP seeking criticism - who can vote for the best reviews? While I'm at it, I'll copy and paste my thoughts that I suggested in the VGMix thread on the matter of the future of the WIP board. --- I probably should PM this or something because I'm not sure if you'll read this here. But here goes. How exactly do you suggest we go about making specific recommendations? I think there are obvious issues behind opening a new thread in Community asking a very broad question, such as, "How do we make the site better?", and even "How can we improve the WIP/Feedback forums?" might result in ideas that are too unwieldy, unclear or underdeveloped for real progress to be made. Besides, if every interested user posted in it, and if every forum troll posted in it frequently, it would become difficult to sort through the ideas, let alone consider the advantages of one over another. I'm not exactly sure if this community can handle it, but... as in some open source software projects (KOffice is coming to mind), when some software/group of software reach(es) a point of maturity and stability, but need new features or a slight overhaul, the maintainers of the project might hold a competition of sorts where people submit a complete, detailed description of the changes they would like to see implemented, perhaps even including mockups of how the software would look with the changes. And best of all, because of all the work involved, it prevents every single user from writing up such a suggestion, and it helps ensure that there is some coherence to the ideas being suggested. I propose OC ReMix hold a similar event, where people submit basically a paper/essay/proposal (vocabulary is failing me, I'm sure there's a better word for this) that outlines, details, and helps envision what changes should be made to the site. The main problem though is that only you really know the in's and out's of the code that makes this site tick, and I guess I doubt you're willing to give too much information away, although information may not be necessary, since you're going to be the one who is implementing it anyway. If an idea is just impossible to implement with the current infrastructure, then it just can't be implemented. And, once everyone submits their fully-elaborated ideas, you could (or ... the judges? or someone? this will probably be the most time consuming aspect) figure out which idea(s) are the easiest to understand and visualize, the easiest to implement, the easiest to maintain, the most useful, the fastest, the least compromisable, etc., and perhaps even fuze aspects of different ideas to create the actual site. AND even if the main goal of this method is to limit the ideas that pour in, I still believe it is possible to include any user that wishes to make suggestions: through devolution. Obviously it would be difficult for one person to read every user's ideas, but if a subforum could be devoted to the discussion of ideas of how to improve the site, where users interested in making a proposal can take the ideas discussed within it and present, as a thread, a draft of their proposal to the community, and then (here's the devolution) each individual proposer can deal with the feedback they receive on their own ideas and finally create a substantive proposal to be submitted for evaluation. Which, ironically, would make this sort of like the WIP forum, where users are instead critiquing other users' ideas and synthesizing them to make their own massive... proposals. And of course this would need a serious (and not-too-distant) deadline. You can't just leave it open-ended: procrastinators with good ideas will not be able to sit themselves down to write their ideas (I don't know about you but I get some of my best ideas and thinking done under pressure), and because the proposal(s) (themselves) will take time to implement. Plus the average user is none-too-patient: a deadline would do much good for people to see that steps are being taken towards change, to know that, "Alright, by x date, we'll have seen all the ideas and given input on them, and we'll know that the ball is now in the admin(s) court." Now the ball is in your court Mr. Pretzel. (this is making me hungry) I've given you my idea. What do you think? --- Though the issue is this thread is not getting the attention it needs to be getting - probably needs more publicity or something. Because at this point suggestions aren't becoming out of hand or unwieldy. Except maybe for this one. lol. -
