  1. Great town music and the cinematics are generally good, but I didn't like the sailing theme as much as most people and I think the dungeon music is awful on the whole
  2. I thought SS' soundtrack was alright. It's not as good as LTTP, LA, OoT, or MM to me but I thought it was a bit better than WW and TP. Only place I felt it really disappointed hard was the end credits, Zelda was on a really stupid run where every console game since LTTP with the possible exception of MM has had amazing credits music, had to end eventually. And with a few exceptions that I do love such as space junk galaxy and gusty garden galaxy I also feel like SMG was overhyped a little, good soundtrack but I didn't think it was amazing
  3. Most Americans are extremely out of touch with the values our country was founded on, that's why something like the NDAA can pass and there is no real outrage. There's no sense of how badly the government is overstepping its bounds until it's far, far too late.
  4. FL studio is capable for orchestral music but you'll have to look elsewhere for your samples, most of them that come with FL or that IL sells aren't very good. EWQLSO is the de facto recommendation of most people from what I've seen, GPO and VSL also being popular. If you're really on a budget you could even go for free samples but the results obviously won't be as good. I've been working on a setup recently cobbled together from those templates and this library but it's not totally free since I use DW instead of sfz where possible... Also in addition to sample quality, sequenced piano won't sound natural unless you put a lot of effort into it, humans don't play perfectly with the same velocity on every hit. Even then you tend to get better results actually playing it, a MIDI controller is a good investment. If you're "music illiterate" it's a good idea anyway since learning piano will teach you a lot of theory as well
  5. It's sensationalist to say that everyone who has ever used megaupload is going to be prosecuted, but he does make some very valid points about our prison system, the ridiculousness of our copyright laws, and how the police have grown increasingly aggressive towards ordinary citizens, effectively treating everyone as criminals. This country has a lot of momentum heading in a very scary direction, I'm honestly not so sure that we haven't already crossed the point of no return
  6. It's sad how anyone that's read a history book at any point in their lives should see this shit coming and yet so many people still go "well I'm not a pedophile so this doesn't affect me herp". The executive branch has already claimed the power to arbitrarily detain people without due process and even to assassinate american citizens, again without any kind of due process. People don't notice that this is patterned behavior?
  7. My approach has typically been to learn the melody by ear and then toss everything else, I'm terrible with harmonies and this ensures that it will be different from the original as well. A few times I've looked at MIDI's if I want to more closely replicate the feel of the original, but only to learn it, I think it's always a mistake if you take a MIDI and try to just start arranging from that, it's easier to change things starting from scratch
  8. I was the same way, like I'd download old ROMs of out of print games, but nowadays most of those games are available on places like virtual console and PSN, and I've bought a lot of them(I only really play old games on my Wii...). Same goes with music, movies, whatever, a lot of the initial onset of piracy was because the market was slow to adapt to the technology. It is an issue but like any bullshit laws our government puts out, you can follow the money trail and see that it has more to do with who's paying the most than what is actually important to the country. Prescription drug companies, the military industrial complex, alcohol companies, oil companies, and media cartels like the MPAA and RIAA are pretty much collectively raping the people, probably missed a ton of them too...
  9. http://choochoobear.tumblr.com/post/16047028443/sopa-lives-and-mpaa-calls-protests-an-abuse-of-power Some of the strongest hypocrisy I've ever read, if I were trapped in a room with these people I'm not sure I could restrain myself from projectile vomiting every time they attempt to speak. I'd like to say that I'm boycotting them over this but I'm not a big film guy to begin with, it's already been a year or two since I've bought a movie anyway.
  10. Can't make any recommendations on orchestral libraries myself as I've also yet to plunk down any serious money on it either, but if you do get FL don't even consider their Varazdin library, it's awful, significantly worse than free soundfonts even. Also don't bother with bundles unless he expresses an interest in electronic music, pretty much everything IL makes is geared towards it so it would be of little use if he's just trying to make classical music.
  11. I've got -33% on valve -50% on valve -Extra copy of Frozen Synapse I'll trade for pretty much anything(just want the achievement) but I'd prefer anything that would help me get Skyrim Dead Island Dead Rising 2: Off The Record Sonic Generations Saints Row The Third Deus Ex: Human Revolution Will also trade for coal My steam name is IAmLiquid
  12. love the concept for this project, going to play with some of the unclaimed tracks soon and see if I can get something going that I like
  13. notice how the zora in LTTP are dramatically different from all the zora in the other games? yeah
  14. for now you can still use the blocks, my only beef with FL10 is it trying to ram the ABC piano roll down your throat by switching back to it constantly and every time you start the program, I wonder if the graphic piano roll is also considered "obsolete"...
  15. the child and adult endings of OoT leading to MM and WW are already pretty much accounted for, they've already existed in zelda theorydom for years. the link fails path is where nintendo has apparently made a serious retcon, because it's really inexplicable no matter what angle you approach it from
  16. WW probably takes place many hundreds of years after OoT, I've heard that's a translation issue the timeline is pretty silly in general, I just try to look at each game as mostly being it's own entity. probably the best philosophy I've heard on the series is to just think of it as a literal legend, oral traditions are living stories that change over time depending on who's telling them
  17. and it's dongleware attempting to eliminate piracy at the expense of your legitimate customers is not something to be proud of, if I were ever on the fence about reason, this would have pushed me off of it very firmly towards the "do not buy" side
  18. you'll need to upgrade if you want new software but whether or not new software is a necessity is highly questionable, there's a lot of great music on this site made with some extremely "outdated" software. skill is most important as snappleman said.
  19. this is terrible and you should feel terrible. OCR is great for what it is but vgmix has definitely left a gaping hole in its absence, neither site invalidated the other so it's ridiculous to celebrate the death of either
  20. http://twitter.com/#!/YasunoriMitsuda/statuses/121759174047707136 never was a big fan of how apple ran its business but there's no denying the impact jobs had on technology, he will be missed
  21. Audiosurf Bastion Braid BIT. TRIP. RUNNER The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Gattling Gears Jamestown NEOTOKYO° Nightsky NyxQuest Portal Super Meat Boy Swords and Soldiers HD Team Fortress 2 World of Goo Xotic
  22. reason is more of a budget product, it's not cubase or protools where they have a lot of misinformed old people making ridiculous claims about it's "audio engine" being superior to its competitors. $2000 would be shooting themselves in the foot, even $500 is kind of questionable when you can get reaper, renoise, or FLS cheap and a few hundred dollars of VSTs...and most people find it necessary to buy such a host and rewire reason into it to begin with.
  23. eh, there are a lot of bad indie devs out there that just do weird for the sake of being weird, but I can't say I take exception with any of these guys I mean really, you're saying super meat boy is mediocre?
