  1. I actually am rather taken aback that so many people are as surprised as they are. We've seen some of expertly crafted chiptune arrangements from the likes of virt and Shnabubula that almost have a symphonic quality to them. Sam's "NES Jams" has been heavily praised. halc just introduced 9-bit records -- granted, the synths on the debut album were a bit more advanced than what Bobby uses here, but they still show off their versatility. I'd have thunk the members of this community would almost think it obvious that chips can function as an instrument in a vast array of ensembles. As a novice mixer still looking for my own style, I've often considered that symphonic chiptunes have been woefully unexplored and could very likely be a direction I end up focusing toward. So I'm not surprised at all how well this works, but I'm thrilled to see it getting out there. I love the timing of this release, too; I just bought the Wreck-It Ralph soundtrack a few days ago, and while the score is primarily straight orchestra, there are handful of cues that fuse chiptunes into the mix. About the piece: gorgeous.
  2. That's funny. I was playing this on my keyboard as I pulled up your post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zc6GmXLMM8 Not as recent, but Tales of the Abyss had a good handful of really memorable tracks, too.
  3. I've been needing a push to get back in the game. This should be just the ticket! Sign me up as a novice, please. If the Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet was any indication, I like playing with a variety of styles, but haven't really found a voice in any... http://soundcloud.com/xarnax42/power-outage-spark-man-in-wily http://soundcloud.com/xarnax42/electrostatic-spark-man-in-mr http://soundcloud.com/xarnax42/tower-power-boogie-spark-man EDIT: Not sure if it's pertinent, but Reason is my DAW of choice.
  4. I wouldn't count this one out just yet. However, with the announcement of Balance and Ruin, the aggressive timeline just isn't necessary. I'm pretty sure a good chunk of claims are still being held sincerely. Of course, rabid fans of the game's music will always want as many mixes as they can get, and the sooner the better, but it does make sense, if this project is going to continue, to push it back maybe even a couple years.
  5. I'm not entirely confident that this game is safe for work.
  6. Thanks, Matt. I'm definitely most naturally suited to purer tones (operatic, choral, pop, whatever) I recorded this choral arrangement in my apartment a couple years ago: O Domine Jesu Christe (Palestrina) I'm also always looking for opportunities to branch out. I tried my hand covering a rock metal song the other day. It's a lot more work and wears my voice down fairly quickly, but as long as I'm not performing live, that's not such a big issue. Here're the results so far: http://www.jessedeacon.com/music/jdvoxdemo.mp3 Original here ( )Really, the biggest thing that's held me up from getting more recordings out there is backing tracks. I prefer not to karaoke over another song's original vocals (although I think it worked out okay on the sample above...), and I've had considerable difficulty finding tracks without them.
  7. With the plateauing of pledges since the $100 level was filled, $150,000 seemed just out of reach. Kudos to the bidder that pushed it over. Wow. As for things to get excited about down the road (beyond the obvious), I'm really intrigued to see what comes out of the 22 requests on the table.
  8. Got official word today that we have leave authorized through January 7, so I am go. Now on the hunt for the cheapest way to get back to Anchorage within 30 hours of check-out.
  9. Inspired in no small part by the Final Fantasy VII playlists that Zanquino E.S. put together, I thought it would be really helpful to make everyone's playlists easy to find and easy to share. Now that the new torrent is out, I've gotten a rough start on this, but could definitely use help from just about every angle. If you have any playlists that are particularly suited to a particular occasion or mood, or that just get so much replay that you have to share*, here's the place to do it. For now, I've got the above-mentioned FFVII lists thrown together for your downloading pleasure. I thought there was a way to create .m3u files with relative paths, but I couldn't figure it out. As long as your tracks are all in the same location, though, it's a really quick fix. In any case, any suggestions on how to package or streamline this better is welcome. *I'm not trying to start a favorites thread, here, so if a mod has any guidelines they'd like to suggest, that would probably be helpful. BONUS! With Halloween just around the corner, you may also want to grab Liontamer's 2011 thread in playlist form, here

  11. Here's a good place to start: http://ocremix.org/forums/tags.php?tag=funky
  12. Never really played much Sonic, and I'm not familiar with the OST, but I'd definitely be willing to contribute some tenor vocals to anyone who may need them.
  13. I'm home! If anyone is looking for a vocalist, I'd be happy to contribute. Here again is a link to the choral piece I posted before, recorded a couple years ago: http://soundcloud.com/xarnax42/o-domine-jesu-christi More recently, I sang on Calum's entry for zircon's Final Fantasy 6 contest, which was more of a bossa nova style: http://tindeck.com/listen/hsvm
  14. Just in case anyone who's interested missed it, you can download a demo of this in the eShop for free.
  15. When I was a kid, I'd frequently start humming Final Fantasy 4 - Prologue, and shortly thereafter wonder when I slid into The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Epilogue (Beautiful Hyrule) Also, these three all have a fairly long section that's very similar: Pokemon Blue/Red - S.S. Anne Tales of Symphonia - Colette (and slow version, "It is Sad") OC ReMix 1049 - Song of the Mountain (Chrono Trigger) by Urza
  16. I remember seeing this in the oldest issues of Nintendo Power as their experts' greatest gaming achievements. Actually requires more patience than skill.
  17. Not sure if you've come across the Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet yet, but you can find it here. Unless Gario or Chernabogue (representing Magnet Man and Crash Man, respectively) are hosting their tracks individually elsewhere, you'll need to grab .zips for the whole round they're in. Not really a bad deal if you ask me. The compo resulted in over 100 tracks; over half of them are still in a regular rotation on my playlists.
  18. Blargh. I had a decent concept, I think, but it was apparently too ambitious for the amount of time I ended up with. I'll try to keep working on it over the next couple weeks, but right now, the file is too much a smattering of ideas to make any sense of in time. Particular apology to Enigami - I was bound to steal someone's top choice, but at least if it had been someone else's, it wouldn't have come as such a surprise.
  19. This week has been a lot more hectic than I had hoped, so far. Hoping (and it's looking like) it will slow down a little bit. I did, however, just manage to listen to my themes on repeat for half an hour while enjoying a cigar. Aaron: it's on.
  20. My name begins and ends with X, and I'm in the X bracket. See you in the finals.
  21. I've only played through X1, and barely touched any of the others. Obviously, I'm extremely partial to 1's themes, and generally prefer the SNES tracks over the later ones. Still, Optic Sunflower has a few excellent motifs to work with. I'll do everything I can to get matched up against someone who can do it justice. Also, glad to see where my first, second, and third picks landed. I'm expecting some good stuff to come of those.
  22. I fully support this endeavor. Also...Yuzo Koshiro. Very yes. Pretty sure if you search the forum for "Legacy of the Wizard", you'll find about half of all my posts. Best that not enough people know about, no question.
  23. You are a fantastic person. I'd be happy to hold onto that for you.
