OCRA-0033 - Mega Man X: Maverick Rising
jnWake replied to Bahamut's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
Maverick Rising also missed most of the boss themes, so there is material for a sequel! -
finished Mother Title Theme: Yo Momma
jnWake replied to AlmightyArceus's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I posted this on the competition topic: "Yo Momma - Nice source! And nicely arranged too. At times I feel the song sounds a bit muddy, maybe because the synths are too similar. Maybe you could have used more varied samples for this." I think the arrangement is fine, I didn't find it boring, but I'd spice it up with different samples. Strings would be very fitting, to make a contrast with all the synths. -
I don't think the submission process is causing any delays... Like Mokram mentioned, one of the obvious bottle-necks is the posting. Since djp doesn't have all the time of the world, it's obvious he can't handle to post mixes on a daily basis consistently. I agree with Mokram in that having more people (not many more) posting the mixes on the front page could help. Maybe try to organize it so that a mix gets posted every 2 days. Now, about judging, I've noticed one thing that may slow the process. I opened the first 10 rejected mixes on the judges subforum and ALL of them had at least one vote that said "No (resub)", with most of the mixes receiving only "resubs". Encouraging people to resub is a nice thing, but when you do this, the judging queue doesn't get any shorter than before judging the song (assuming most people actually resub). I haven't read the votes in detail, but maybe some of these "resub" posts are being too picky and could instead be changed to a Yes, which would slow the posting queue, but speed up the judging one. Otherwise, they could just be changed to a straight No. After all, no one says that a No means you can't resubmit.

I didn't mean it in an "OCR" way But it's true, the original song IS like many songs pasted one after the other. That leaves room for other remixers to tackle the other sections of the song.

Nice competition! I'll make (short reviews) of the tracks: Before the World Ends - I loved the natural sounding intro with the flute and guitar. I didn't know the source, but after listening to it, I felt it was nicely used. Only thing I disliked were the drums. Very unfitting samples IMO, especially the snare which is just bad. I expected a more natural sounding snare. Also, the synth starting at 1:45 could use some filtering since it feels too "static". Broken Wings - Good song, very dramatic. I wasn't that happy with the source usage since the original song has many sections and you elaborated on very little of it. Still, the section that you picked was nicely developed. Production is very good (for my standards). A deserved winner. Scarf Face - Fun song. The rock approach was cool, and fitting for the source. Production wasn't that good in my opinion though, especially regarding the volumes. Drums are very important on rock songs, and they are very low here, making the arrangement feel a lot less powerful. Guitars were very cool though. Synths are a bit dry. Upon New Shores - Source makes my nostalgia meter rise! I liked the different rhytm for the intro section, but I felt that the introduction of the drums was a bit too sudden, drowning the synth. Actually, drums are a bit too loud for most of the mix imo. Arrangement is interesting, the electric guitar usage reminds me of Chrono Cross! Source is nicely used on the song. Vertigo - Being very honest, I didn't listen to this one carefully. It's looong and I'm not a big fan of techno/electronic music... Also the link provided for the source wasn't very good. I'm not too familiar with this kind of music, so I can't really offer much advice. The synth at 4:55 felt a little weak though. Most other stuff sounded nice. Yo Momma - Nice source! And nicely arranged too. At times I feel the song sounds a bit muddy, maybe because the synths are too similar. Maybe you could have used more varied samples for this. I'm a novice, but I hope this helps!

Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2012
jnWake replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
I tried to stay away from the original X game, since it's been way too overremixed... I wanted to try new songs. X2 and X3 have odd soundtracks, most songs being too guitar based (with some notable exceptions though). X4 was a bit meh, not good or bad. X5 and X6 have interesting soundtracks. I didn't like X7's soundtrack and didn't listen to X8's one. -
Flat Notes: A Paper Mario ReMix Album - 7 TRACKS AVAILABLE!
jnWake replied to RECKENEFIN's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
That is fine. Considering the large amount of projects and other stuff, we MAY have enough time for people to do enough Bonus Tracks! I'm pretty advanced on my song. Should I PM it to you? Or post it somewhere? -

jnWake replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
Sign me up: 1. Mega Man X2 - Wire Sponge. 2. Mega Man X6 - Blizzard Wolfgang. 3. Mega Man X6 - Shieldner Sheldon. 4. Mega Man X4 - Cyber Peacock. 5. Mega Man X5 - Volt Kraken. I hope someone picks the themes I don't get, they're so good. Also, for people that can't find the tracks: OSTs of X2 to X8 uploaded by this user. I don't know if he uploaded X1, but somebody else can probably find a link for that. -
Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2012

When remixing 2 part songs, both parts can be used in the remix right? -
It doesn't sound bad but it is lacking a lot of originality in my opinion. You basically grabbed the 3 sources, put one after the other with abrupt transitions and then inserted synthetic sounding samples to play the melodies... The sounds are okay, but it really lacks some innovation, unless it is meant to be a cover. I'd recommend you to experiment with the melodies and, if you're making a medley, to work on a way to actually mix the tracks, instead of putting one after the other without a real connection.

Flat Notes: A Paper Mario ReMix Album - 7 TRACKS AVAILABLE!
jnWake replied to RECKENEFIN's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
Yeah, I understand those concerns. I guess it all depends on how big you plan the project to be (8 more tracks wouldn't make it that much bigger though) and, more importantly, when do you plan to have the project ready. If we get the official project status, it may be easier to get people, so I think this matter could be delayed until the project becomes official. Some examples of tracks I miss (and that I'd be willing to tackle!): - : Beautiful track. Not sure what chapter it'd fit in though.- : Mysterious. Could be mixed with the next song:- : Eerie song. Both from Chapter 7. -
I started playing piano when I was 12. Obviously, I didn't compose back then. Instead, I played tunes by bands like Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica! Anyway, I started doing my first "songs" when I was 14/15, using Guitar Pro. They were mainly crappy imitations of my favourite band's styles, so they were crappy lol. Then I just kept composing, and my song writing started to turn the right way when I started to develop an own style. I've made a lot of songs, and I'm quite proud of a good number of them. However, they were all done in MIDI, and only on my mind they had decent quality sounds. Only this year I started "producing", thanks to these forums.

Flat Notes: A Paper Mario ReMix Album - 7 TRACKS AVAILABLE!
jnWake replied to RECKENEFIN's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
I'm advancing in the Crystal Palace arrangement, some kind of orchestral progressive rock right now I know it took a while to get a full roster, but haven't you considered adding a second track for the 8 chapters? There are some amazing tunes we are missing -
Oh, this sounds so fun... But I'm busy on Sunday How often is this held?

finished ZeldaStep - Princess Zelda Theme ReMix
jnWake replied to Garrett Williamson's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Interesting take on the theme. The slow drums are the what makes this special IMO. As a suggestion, I'd add a second kick in every bar between the second and third beats. I think it makes the drums feel a bit more full. The strings help the song in avoiding excessive repetitiveness, even though the main theme does get repeated a bit too much without much variety. I'm also a bit surprised by the fact that you don't finish the main theme with the high note that the original does. It'd be more interesting to use that instead of the descending notes every time. -
wip Final Fantasy VI - "Coin Song" & "Edgar and Sabin's Theme"
jnWake replied to jnWake's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I didn't use much reverb on the piano, that's true. But I tried with more reverb and I didn't like how it sounded... Maybe I can blame ReaVerb for that? All other instruments have a fair share of reverb. In fact, I was afraid I had used too much reverb lol. I used compression on most tracks, but not really strong ones. I wanted the mix to sound as natural as possible. I also used a limiter to raise the overall volume. I'm kinda new to this producing stuff, so thanks for the comments! -
wip Final Fantasy VI - "Coin Song" & "Edgar and Sabin's Theme"
jnWake replied to jnWake's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I only asked in case I needed to change the thread tag back to "Finished". I appreciate all feedback of course! Anyway, I worked a bit more on EQ and instruments placing. Also, I played the piano track with a MIDI controller. So, this is (for now) the final version of the song: http://soundcloud.com/jnwake/coin-song-figaro-castle-fv . Hope you like it! -
Anybody can vote, right? I'm not familiar with most of the sources, but I'd like to support this!

Being from South America is completely bad for these kind of things

Does writing music scare you?
jnWake replied to Sam Ascher-Weiss's topic in Music Composition & Production
Unless you approach remixing as writing original music. If you just grab a source and change it slightly, it'll be boring, but if you try to compose a new song while using a source, then it is as fun as writing original music! Well, to me at least -
finished Zelda - Great Fairy Fountain (Classical/Ambient Remix)
jnWake replied to Iceferno's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Wow, the remix is super long. Your production is always nice (what the hell is Clouddrifter?). I like the "The Light Spirit Appears" section, it is very beautiful. The Lost Woods before it was good too, but not as impressive. The lead that starts at 3:50 would be nice with some delay IMO. The transition to the Great Fairy theme was good. The attack on the string pad is a bit too slow, I'd make it a bit quicker. The bass synth at the 4:50 mark is unfitting in my opinion, it needs to be more mellow sounding. Like Elder Kirby said, the 6:36 section is uh... not really fitting. I don't the harp that enters at 7:02 is abrupt though. However, it is quite loud, drowning the flute and pads later. The sound at 8:22 (or close to that) is way too loud. The fairy arpeggios get repeated a bit too much too... The variation at 10:10 is very very welcome. Nice touch. Overall, a pretty song, similar to what you usually do. However, it is a bit too long and OCR would probably reject it because of its medley-ish nature. I like the first themes on the intro, but the song could just use the fairy themes and it'd have a better chance at becoming posted (I think). -
OCR02472 - Mega Man X3 "Super Fighting Robot X"
jnWake replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is one of my faves from the album. The synths are so cool (they remind of Van Halen ). Solos are fun and the general mood of the song is cool!
