Ever used REAL tape saturation?
suzumebachi replied to bustatunez's topic in Music Composition & Production
back in high school an eccentric musician friend of mine layered songs together using 6 or 7 of these old hunks of crap: ...not that the songs were any good or even listenable mind you, but those junky old tape recorders can probably be bought for a dime a dozen. yes i realize you're all talking about reel to reel, but i thought i'd offer a more cost effective and potentially hilariously embarrassing solution. -
mmm... superior.

CPU Performance issues in DAW
suzumebachi replied to Nutritious's topic in Music Composition & Production
This. I've probably said it 500 times, but god damn, Audigys are probably the worst cards ever for music. Out of curiosity, are you using ASIO4All? On the off chance that the Audigy isn't the culprit, other possibilities would be your RAM, like Andy mentioned, or, especially your hard drive since you're using so many disk streaming samples (EWQLSOSE). -
what the hell. i finally gave in and got vista less than 2 months ago, and now a new windows is coming out? so basically instead of fixing all the problems vista has, microsoft is gonna crap out another OS for us to buy! awesome. and they wonder why their shit gets pirated

speaking of spiked orange juice, sorry about crashing the OCR acoustifag party in the lobby, but god damnit i hate the little mermaid but i still love you guys. anyways, just got back in the 505. MAGFest was awesome yet again. here are some thoughts in a completely unorganized stream of consciousness format before i render myself unconscious for the next 18 hours to catch up on sleep: didn't get to hang out with the OCR guys as much this year, busy busy busy, but still good to see you all! didn't get to rock out at JamSpace like, at all. always some kind of scheduled shit going on in there . still fun to watch, and again i enjoyed the open mic concerts though. next time i should bring more CDs, or at least sleeves or jewel cases or smth no it's not a potatohead! i need to learn how exactly one tunes a melodica, geez hilton needs to learn how exactly one tunes a piano, geez i should buy rockband apparently when i'm sober i'm quiet. apparently when i'm drunk i don't shut the fuck up. note to larry: next time you interview me for something make sure i'm either sober or completely smashed, not somewhere awkwardly in between! escariot has polymer89 as a ringtone. i lol'd. metroid metal is amaaaaaazing i may have a gay crush on Karnov (<3 ubik) and many more!

So you wanna make chiptunes?
suzumebachi replied to OverCoat's topic in Music Composition & Production
man i really want to get into YM2612 stuff but TFM Maker seems pretty lacking -
"that game" originated the sad excuse for an FPS all you suckers constantly pawn over like little girls playing with Bratz also, what the hell do you mean failed attempt at gameplay? TF2 is the one that fails. being stuck in tunnel vision while your stupid gun charges up is retarded. holding in your shot and being able to zoom in and out at will waiting for the perfect moment to release is simply superior. there's doo doo on your head edit: how i manage to double post? i swear my last post was before this chucklehead

on a related note, let's play Action Quake 2

I'd be down for some Mega TF or Deadlode. Unfortunately I don't have HL anymore, so TFC is out.

Remixing Application : Korg DS-10
suzumebachi replied to Suma's topic in Music Composition & Production
I doubt you'd get on OCR with something made right out of DS-10. I mean, I suppose it would be possible, but very unlikely. However, if you wanted to do something with like multiple recorded layers of DS-10s and processing, you'd likely get much farther. Anyways a few quick thoughts on DS-10 as a tool for music: By itself, DS-10 is pretty lacking. I realize it's supposed to be a faithful recreation of the MS-20 of old, but honestly, the DS sound engine is capable of SO much more, so the limitations here are more frustrating than anything. The biggest drawbacks in my opinion are twofold: first, is the lack of any kind of arpeggiator. Just that simple addition would make the DS-10 a serious amount of powerful. Second, the limitation on patterns per song. Considering each pattern is only one measure (depending on the BPM I suppose) that's really, really limiting unless all you're gonna make is ultra repetitive techno. This makes DS-10 just shy of useless for sequencing music ideas that pop into your head on the go, which is essentially what I got it for. So when all is said and done, DS-10 is more of a toy or gimmick than a bonafide music tool. Fun to play with, and still handy for some things on the go, but not at all practical for actual application. -

Need help buying an acoustic guitar.
suzumebachi replied to Hy Bound's topic in Music Composition & Production
I agree with what these guys said. Any given acoustic properly micced and mixed is going to hands down sound better than an acoustic/electric. I prefer the sound of my $50 Rogue dreadnaught micced over the sound of my $500 Ibanez acoustic/electric. A/Es just sound unnatural and... plucky. Of course you can always buy an acoustic/electric and mic it... If you were me (OR vice verse) I'd start by finding a decent starter acoustic guitar to learn on first. You can get one from rondo for $40-50 (more if you REALLY feel like splurging) and save your Guitar Center gift cards or whatever for buying recording equipment. My $0.02 USD. -
Do you listen to albums or songs?
suzumebachi replied to Lie Mf B's topic in Music Composition & Production
Well, in that case you might as well be listening to your mp3 player set to shuffle. Albums are generally meant to be cohesive. Honestly though, I don't mind those types of variety albums (or whatever you would call them, if there is a technical term). It depends on the album, the style, my mood, whatever. But I have a tendency to like cohesive albums on the whole more. It's nice to have an album that plays well front to back. Like any Pink Floyd album, or even Relics of the Chozo. The problem with these albums are sometimes the songs are weak by themselves. For example, Dark Side of the Moon. 'Great Gig in the Sky' isn't a bad song by itself, but it just makes so much more sense when you listen to it right after 'Time'. But on the other hand, sometimes it's nice to have a variety of songs that can stand well enough on their own. Like most Led Zeppelin albums, or Voices of the Lifestream (or <shameless plug> An Ideal Euphemistic). But some of these types of albums are hard to listen to all at once, especially if they're long like VotL. But before you go and say "oh my god you're so not helping," in my opinion there is a (super) happy medium. Albums with lots of variety that are still cohesive and work well as an album, comprised of songs that also stand well on their own. They do exist. The Beatles had a few albums like this, notably Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band and the White Album. The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds might be another example. I realize I'm setting the bar pretty high here, but if you're gonna strive for something, why not go balls out all the way? -

What addons? I could probably use some. I usually get 400-600 on Illidan. Unless I'm in Dalaran or Alterac Valley, then it goes up to about 12,000. -
Find a levelling guide for Horde (just google it there's tons of them--but preferably a newer one that takes into account the Dustwallow Marsh and group quest changes) and get the QuestHelper mod. Don't run back to turn in a quest as soon as you complete it, especially if you have other quests nearby (QuestHelper will help a lot with this). Don't be afraid to set your hearth to the nearest quest hub and actually use it. Don't be afraid to use whatever cooldowns you have to kill things faster. Also, certain classes will level up a lot faster than others. For example, warriors level pretty slowly (lots of downtime for healing up), but hunters (any spec), mages (probably frost/arcane for AoE grinding), and druids (especially feral up until level 60 or so, then either feral or balance after that) level quickly. The other classes are capable of leveling quickly but generally require better gear in order to do so. Another tip is if you're levelling a highly hit-rating dependant class, like rogue, warrior, or enhancement shaman, don't be afraid to grind out a level, but try to avoid grinding on mobs that are higher level than you. The amount of extra XP you will get for killing them won't be worth the extra time it takes to kill them and the extra downtime it takes to recover from a fight. Stick to mobs ideally 1-3 levels below you, you should be able to tear through them fast and easy with little downtime, and make more efficient XP gains. This also goes for AoE grinding. Really it goes for just about everything but hunters. If you're a hunter just kill anything yellow, even orange if you need it for a quest. Also, finding a questing buddy at or around your level can help, but only when you actually work in tandem (ie: mage AoEs fuckton of guys while priest keeps him alive, etc). Otherwise the XP split will hurt more than it helps. But this isn't really needed anymore, especially since there are very few, if any, group quests before level 60 anymore. But most of all, use a levelling guide and get questhelper, that alone will speed you up a ridiculous amount. Also if I'm on (Grundyman or Wolfenleid on Illidan) and you need a run-through a dungeon and I'm not in the middle of anything, I'll be happy to help.

Or I could spec frost? XD -
I have a hardon for Gradius. Especially Gradius III. I played that game till my fingers bled back in the day. Some day when I am rich and famous and have free time I will make a Gradius III arrange album. Some day.

Starting a new character, sure. But people like my brother who was already level 70 (three times over: paladin, priest, mage) hit level 80 in like 4 days. He spends most of his time now farming blacksmithing mats because there's not enough other level 80s to raid or PvP with. Anyways DK is 72 now. Once I hit 70 and went to Northrend, my leveling speed dropped significantly. It took me a full day of questing to go from 70 to 71. Quest itemization is serious crap, I'm still wearing the blue shit I started with and it's starting to show. I can't AoE tank 5-6 mobs at a time anymore. Hell, it takes 3 Unholy Blights and 2 Death and Decays and about 500 blood strikes to kill things now. Pretty frustrating. On the other hand, Northrend is pretty epic. They put so much more detail into it than Outland, it makes Outland look like a piece of crap. Warsong Hold and Vengeance Landing are both pretty sweet. And the crazy Vrykul villages built all along the inside of the canyons and shit... It's like they actually put effort into it! Plus some of the quests are actually fun. Like the one where you get the siege tank and go blow up 100 scourge and talk smack to Kel'Thuzad. Even the models are higher quality. The new worgs don't walk around like deformed wolves with metersticks permanently shoved up their asses. And the vrykul actually have like, faces! It's nice. Except for the Taunka. Taurens with busted faces? What's that all about? They use the exact same models and voices even. Lame.
