TheChargingRhino reacted to BardicKnowledge in Final Fantasy VI playthrough with commentary from scholars
Me, Drumultima, and two scholars not on OCR (Dana Plank and Michael Harris) have begun playing through Final Fantasy VI while we talk about what's interesting in the music as we go along.  The first quarter or so of the game is done and posted to YouTube here -- join us Thursday, 2/9, at 9:00 PM EST for the next session (likely to include the opera scene).
Any particular things you're interested in hearing us muse over between leaving Narshe after Terra flies off and departing for Thamasa (as far as we're likely to get next time)?  Let us know!
EDIT: Our second session is up on both YouTube and Twitch -- we got as far as the escape from the Magitek Research Facility.  Doug couldn't make it (thanks to the Northeast weather) so we called upon Julianne Grasso to sub for him.

I've got a bunch of projects that use various EWQL (multiple patches) and various Kontakt (multiple patches) all the time. No issues. Win10 pro, updates, drivers, all good to go.

it was almost definitely an issue with the system bus drivers not being installed correctly, or having multiple sets of drivers overlapping, so the VSTs couldn't requisition IRQ channels without getting overlaps or interrupts. reinstalling windows and reinstalling the system bus drivers likely would have taken care of it. reinstalling w8 had the same effect.
also, bricking is a term that denotes damaging the firmware of a ROM chip meaning it can't be used. that doesn't sound like your issue...not trying to be a pedant but bricking vs. screwing up the os is a big difference =)

This reminds me of some material from an English course I took in undergrad on alternative media for literature. I really like things like this, and I would certainly enjoy doing a creative endeavor along those lines.

You could also do music yourself, or work with a musician, to turn your poetry into songs.  You could use the poems as lyrics, and edit them to make them fit to a melody of an existing game tune, or you could write original music with the poems as lyrics.
As somebody who has tried his whole life to write good poetry/lyrics, and failed miserably, I would jump at the opportunity to turn somebody's poetry into a song.

New build today! This one is huge. Since my last update here in November the game looks better, has way fewer bugs, way more content, more quality of life features and options... it's just way better. So your feedback is greatly appreciated! Play for free!

    Tangledeep is now on Kickstarter!
We're raising money for extra animation polish like walking & attacking animations, plus special guest composers like Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu 3) who is already onboard!!! If you want to get access to pre-release builds after April, get the digital soundtrack, Steam key, or immortalize yourself in the game, check out the campaign!
    WHAT'S TANGLEDEEP
It's a 16-bit, FF/Square-inspired dungeon crawler. A true roguelike that takes inspiration from classic western games and JRPGs alike. Tactical turn-based combat, procedural generation, deep customization, lots and lots of loot, and monsters to battle. I've been working on this for over a year now and I'm about 40% done - your feedback is appreciated! The game is playable on Mac and PC right now, but eventually will be on Linux and possibly consoles/mobile too.
I'm doing all the code & design for the game (along with music, of course) while @OA is doing beautiful UI, environments and tiles, and a couple other artists doing characters, battle FX, and items. We're hoping to release the game by the end of the year!
As of now, though the game is definitely shaping up, it's still pre-alpha with some placeholder art and lots of content yet to be made (and balancing to be done).

Today we have a wide spread of new art, polish, bug fixes, balance tweaks, and content. The biggest game experience changes are that you now start in the town, and you now have a permanent 'town portal' item that can be used anytime to return to town. You can then take a portal back to where you were. We're also experimenting with walking sprites - starting with the Hunter - which look pretty amazing, in my opinion!

The current cast of characters, monsters and NPCs. Some new art + palette improvements here!

A snapshot of the world as it looks now. Improved grass, trees, better lighting, better fog of war.

    Walking animation!?

Very good atmosphere here, more good stuff than bad so Its easier if I just name the stuff I wasn't grooving to....In descending order from most noticable
    1) 2:09 the gating just really pulls me out...I know what your trying to do and it should work, but Ive never been able to pull it off successfully, maybe something... faster? less sinewave-ish?
    2) 0:27 the toy-box/ kalimba pluck, is really dry...maybe soak it in reverb for 20min then hang dry?
    3) The kick jumps in towards the end which sounds nice, but with all the glitching going on it remains fairly static, maybe a few fills?

Odder-den-dat, I like it the samples, they were used tastefully and clearly and this represents a nice project to be fleshed out

No restrictions. You can do an arrangement that covers several sources as long as it's cohesive and doesn't feel like a medley. My only posted mix that I arranged is of that type!

Yo man, in my arranging of Meteo, check this out - the B section modulates to a Lydian bII key signature.  So the tonic moves up a half-step and raises the new 4th scale degree.

Ten years of music. I never expected to be involved in this project for ten years. I love that I've had the chance to do this for a full decade. So it is with no regrets that I am stepping back from An OverClocked Christmas and turning the project over to The Coop. While I will still be involved in the website, I will no longer be directing the project. It is my hope that this wonderful project will live on for as long as OverClocked ReMix does.
I did not arrive at this decision lightly. But to be honest, I thought it was time to pass the torch. That said, I want to thank everyone who has participated over the years in the project. I especially want to thank The Coop for all of the amazing 8bit art that he's done over the year's, as well as djpretzel for the yearly signal boosts via ReMix posts. I'm so glad to have been part of this project.

    Thank you all.

I suppose a good question is what you'd like to know about it?
The form of the track is pretty standard; Intro - AABBC : repeat. Chord structure for the A section is I-bIII-ivb-bVI-v6b, B is I-bIII-ivb-bVI-vb(-I) and the C section II#-v.
There is an interesting tidbit for the A section in that the chords are mostly open, so whether they're major or minor is up for debate. Due to the harmonization of the B section, though, I argue that it's a major tonic with a good deal of primary mixture throughout (that's how you get the bIII-ivb-bVI-v6b combinations; in minor that'd just be III-iv-VI-v6), though I could see the argument that the B section opens up with a primary mixture I# chord instead of the rest of the track utilizing primary mixture. Intentional or not, that's ambiguous - there's a strong argument for both cases. There are no real cadences throughout the track, as there is never a motion V-I(or i); if you're a first year theory student you might find it interesting that a lot of modern music doesn't utilize the true V-I cadence (root on scale degree 5, raised 7th scale degree), instead opting for a v-I (lowered 7th) or bVII-I pseudo-cadence instead.
The production is decent for the NES. It's no Follin track, but it does utilize nifty tricks like reverb to give it life. It's uses a staple KONAMI sound, which isn't surprising since ULTRA was a branch of Konami. I don't catch any particular themes of interest (like references to the Turtles theme, for example) - it just seems like a self-contained little tune. Well produced, but self contained.
There's my theory contribution of 2017!
