  1. I remember this from the One vs Many DoD back in June; was a little stumped over why it was merely going to be an Alternative entry. With no familiarity over the source material, and remembering the skills you had in previous years, the least I did was managed to check out what I could. I did notice on the first listen that the rhythm guitar playing felt really loose; no idea how it can be seen as an artistic choice as it felt more like a technical concern to me and makes it feel difficult to folow the rhythm. There have been artists that have similarly struggled past the panel for backing instrument timing, so don't feel too discouraged. The writing here though is strong, and in regards to vocal performance it seems as if you have also shown some improvement there within the years you took a break from this community. So I can say that's a great thing to have prospered upon. Also out of personal preference it kind of seems to end a bit quick for me and might've warranted another verse and a longer solo after it a la Deep Purple, but it might have depended on how people might've wanted to expect from the track. Don't take it personally ^^* It's a shame that you don't really want to work on another revision because I liked the ideas the first time around, and I had a lot of confidence that you'd refine things for a resub. But I know that with great improvement to your vocal tone and your ideas still being in place, I can see you being re-posted here soon enough. Keep up the effort
  2. I could've sworn when I first saw Ethan Mars in Heavy Rain, I thought "this character looks like my old Music Technology tutor back at University". Then on closer look between the pair, I could've seen a perfect match if Ethan shaved more often. I apologise for the small picture, but that was the biggest resolution of the tutor photo I could even locate.
  3. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with forming opinions. It's just that I'm reaching breaking point with all the amount of unjustified disliking just because of the album name alone, and to see people compare with other albums as well only just makes matters worse. We are fine to take criticism when criticism is due, definitely - just not on what can be strictly seen as artistic direction, which is giving me the impression that everyone involved on this thing didn't do their job. And yes, "I didn't enjoy the album, I enjoyed another album more" is definitely written as "album A is better than project B" in a person's point of view. Comments like that to me feel really unsettling, and can similarly be unsettling for when others compare projects beforehand. Remember a few posts before the history thread was closed when someone brought up "Threshold of a Dream" for that same reason - didn't like the artistic direction but thought this one would be more cohesive? How did you and the rest of the project staff feel to see that comparison being brought up?
  4. Quoted for truth. People wrote the tracks not necessarily to reflect on the title or the pacing, but on how they personally felt on the tracks to be arranged. Personally I would've just taken it at face value until you stated that you felt the NiGHTS album was better. Don't get me wrong, Stevo did a fantastic job in getting everything together, but the last thing anyone would've wanted in a thread like this was "this project sucks, another project was better" - all it would seem to do was just completely derail the direction of the thread as well as add more unnecessary shame upon the mixers. There was a huge discussion about the genre directions further on in the thread, and true to some people it may not be the direction they wanted, but let's face the facts - with a total of eight tracks posted as individual mixes and a ninth one coming on its way, the strength of these mixposts heavily outweigh the unnecessary critics, therefore on a technical point I can say The Sound of Speed has achieved a lot. I want to be fair to say that this is, by FAR, the proudest album I've been involved with
  5. Ideally it *has* already started, and given that you're one of those that accepted the first pick you should still be fine to work on your entry. But between OP upkeep and those that went for re-rolls, things somehow don't seem to be as organised as previous years; not going against the staff, but it does somehow seem to feel that way. :\ I say if you're in doubt over something, the best idea would probably be to log onto the #thasauce IRC channel and get in contact with Starla, otherwise a forum PM to either her or Rama would most likely be a safer bet. As for myself, I'm pretty confident I'd have something set for the September 2nd deadline, even if it's going in a direction that I didn't originally have in mind
  6. Either virt or CarboHydroM would have you beat at the 200MB Wav front, if you think "Crystal Flash" and "Unsealed" respectively would be considered passable site material To draw this back on topic though, I wish I could help out in some way, but "Tomorrow's Wake" is already a 192 CBR encoding (and even then I lost the wav >_>), and "Time's Anxiety" definitely can't be done as long as GrayLightning is absent. Either way, keep up the good progress.
  7. Shut up Wes; I didn't miss anything!
  8. So, looking down at the forums today is the birthday of one of our Workshop Operators/OCAD Presenters. Clearly one of THE most determined guys in the community, and a great person to talk with as well for whatever the occasion, this community definitely won't be the same without Stevo. So, happy birthday to you! And let's hope somewhere out there is a ska buffet just waiting for you
  9. Just popping by to say that after learning Zorlaxseven's track, I've got a fully performed take on my hands! Give me a couple more days for post-production and I'll see what he (she?) thinks before deciding to call it official
  10. It's funny you brought this up because I've been in a few of those conversations with other site members about them thinking OCR prefers to promote the most relevant people in the community, or those "badasses" you speak of. In OCR's defence, I feel the communication between staff and musician has improved greatly over at least the past couple of years, so it's definitely fine in regards to the most determined amongst us. There DOES, however, feel as if there's some kind of selective process in regards to artist promotion, with most examples being shown in either mixposts or OCR's Twitter. Hence, for some it DOES feel like being politely ignored. But I am sure some VGMix-like system would still do some good. Sure, there will STILL be some celebrated badasses here, but if people get the ball moving when/if the idea surfaces, then such alienation may be reduced depending on ways of communication with others. Much like djp stated there are some small cliques within the community, but they can also be broken down much further than just how they feel about OCR
  11. As someone who both has a longtime "association" with VGMix AND someone that had waited several years between submissions, I am definitely in favor of it. Considering now that OCR has a tendancy to draw in a much older artist pool than previous years, a VGMix-style setup would be great for younger blood and hobbyists alike to really get into the ropes. Remembering Stevo's post in particular in that "beware djp" thread regarding artists' initial frustrations in passing the panel, as well as various heated tensions around other sites in the remix community, it will function well to be able to make music at free will, taking criticism when necessary and even experiment with ideas that might otherwise not make it past the panel depending on the person. Course, given the site's popularity it might still need some moderation to weed out the MIDI rips and other such blatant arrangement offenders. But if this all goes ahead, then it should hopefully be able to provide more peace of mind within the community, and would also more than certainly improve the communication between the artist and their peers
  12. Yeah, I'm sure a handful of us ended up starting out at OCR on the wrong foot (though my case was in regards to fandom likes/hates), but no one can expect a kid to end up quickly learning the ropes and getting posted up quickly, especially in this current environment when it seems like most remixers are in their 20s or 30s. Not including 4-Eyes, did anyone debut on the site when they weren't even 15 at the time? I can't see the video from my office desk, but I'll be sure to witness my head rolling by the time I get back home. As for the cousin part, I'm sure Larry or Stevo are men enough to beat it to a pulp either way
  13. Yes, but to be fair, to my knowledge the re-rolls weren't delayed last year. This however is a huge error on the staff part that might affect the general outcome towards the challenges. :\
  14. I can't say I'm a keen fan of summer due to past experiences with the beach, but I do have a few contributions to share. Coco's Jetski levels tend to offer a little less melody than expected (outside of probably the marimba and steel drum parts) but it speaks itself more with its adventurous soundscape approach. You can see how it fits so well against a backdrop of an ocean expense, tropical islands, and the occasional pirate fleet. Katamari Damacy - "Katamaritaino" I always really liked this one from the Katamari score. It tends to offer a laid-back-Cuban-atmosphere-at-night approach, which similarly is reflected once you translate the original Japanese lyrics. It even works calmly well outside of the game's context, and thus can stand strong in the real world as something to hear when casually strolling in some South/Latin American town during the evenings. Heard in Altamira, the theme seems to capture its multi-purpose-resort feel, making it appropriate to sense during the day when on the beach and using the funfair as well as at night when seeing the theater and casino. It's literally the city that should never sleep, and the backing music indeed give it justice (although not enough for the Tales album 2 years ago; oh well).
  15. Are OCR bio alteration requests allowed here? Not sure if this is the right thread or not, but I'll try here anyway. I still wish to be credited as Rexy on the site, but I'm requesting the real name field to be updated in its longhand form of Beverley Wooff. I was originally going to request a longhand if I was to tie the knot, but at this day and age I can't see myself getting any younger. I hope you consider the request
  16. Well, it pretty much came and went, but thank you so much for the birthday wishes! I did fine over the weekend, had a load of visitors, handful of gifts and felt safe by their side. For those confused about the picture: <Brandon> i thought everything (sent to OCRemix) was supposed to be kept secret <Brandon> not that anyone necessarily tells you that, until you make something public <Brandon> i dont have enough of a following on youtube to make releasing music there worthwhile <Rexy> I'm kinda weird in comparison though; prefer to make something public, THEN send it through xD <Rexy> but that was back in the vgmix days when that task was so much easier to pull off <Brandon> yeah i've heard good things abotu vgmix <Brandon> never used it myself, for whatever reason <Rexy> if you DID use it yourself, we could've met so much earlier xD <Rexy> I bet we would've ended up on bad speaking terms by the time of closure though given how much of a dickbutt I might've been * Rexy ¯\(°_o)/¯ <OA> mmm dickbutts <Brandon> hahaha <Rexy> are you implying that I sound good with ketchup <Rexy> ? <Rexy> O.o <Brandon> you're a dickbutt <OA> not a fan of ketchup <Rexy> eh, we're only human * Rexy ¯\(°_o)/¯ <Brandon> now i must put dickbutt in kesha lyrics <Brandon> cause your butt your butt your butt, is dickbutt <Brandon> wake up in the morning feeling like P. Dickbutt <Brandon> dont stop, make it pop, dj blow my speakers up dickbutt <Brandon> hmmm <Rexy> okay, another example on how ideas from 2 individuals can be lethal and deadly o__O <Brandon> everybody getting crunk crunk, boys try to touch my junk junk gonna slap em if they get dickbutt <Brandon> you build me up you break me down, my heart it pounds yeah you dickbutt * Rexy facedesks <Brandon> this might have to venture into other bands as well <Brandon> i am in love, with what we are, not what we dickbutt <Brandon> and i am starstruck with every part of this whole dickbutt <Rexy> I think we need to get to the bottom of this <Rexy> what is with you and kesha anyway? <Rexy> xD <Brandon> RAH <Brandon> I eat boys up, breakfast and lunch, then when i'm thirsty i drink dickbutt <Brandon> that one fit perfectly <Rexy> yeah, but it still kind of feels disturbing o___O <Brandon> it's dickbutt, dickbutt, gotta get down on dickbutt <Brandon> everybody looking forward to the dickbutt <Brandon> partyin partyin yeah, partyin partyin yeah, fun fun fun fun, looking forward to the dickbutt <Rexy> for some reason, that somehow made the original recording sound more appealing <Rexy> ... Yep, Brandon's literal Google image search wankery never fails to amuse me
  17. You know, sometimes I wonder what the heck the state of my musical pursuits would have been like without you. It's something that not everyone may realise right off the bat, but once they do, then they definitely owe the person in question in more ways than one. So, here's to a happy birthday to you, djp! And be sure to keep the U.S.S. OCRemix floating
  18. Damnit Kyle, both Threshold and Alehouse are freakin' old xD "Hogging Molly" on the other hand is currently being judged, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes down. And yes, the other Crash mix waiting to be judged is also another one of mine. This is what you get when you really, REALLY want the series to get some representation on OCR - try and take it into your OWN hands o__O
  19. Brandon, I had no idea you would react the way you did. Sure, I had my moments with past rejections, but without mentioning what happened here, your reactions absolutely terrified me. But I'm glad enough that we got the resub sorted in the end
  20. Just so you know, I haven't forgotten the deadline and I shall have a demo ready by this time next week. It may be piano only, but it should provide an idea on the direction to go
  21. To be fair I thought it peaked at Sonic & Knuckles, but I actually enjoyed the GBA (Advance) and DS (Rush) titles so I can't argue here. But I swear to God that their response to Project Chaos was so much more optimistic than that, so surely you can see how their reactions purely baffled me. O_o
  22. I can has first post? Anyway, of all tracks shown in the trailer, this was the track that I was looking forward to the most. I didn't play NiGHTS, sure, but of the soundtrack that I heard, "NiGHTS and Raela" clearly became one of my favorite tracks and so when the project came out, this was one of the first tracks I decided to hear. Overall I got to say it was a very impressive collaboration. The intro was awesome with the reference to the infamous mis-interpreted line in the game ("There is no Nights"), the arrangement feels faithful while still being able to branch out, and the production in general felt really sharp for the most part, which definitely showcased the guitar/saxophone duetting in a very positive light. If there's anything I may have to nitpick it's some elements of the drum programming in the beginning being a little 'meh' to me, but it starts to pick up more interestingly as the track went on. In other words, you three did amazingly well on this track and really did it justice. See you three in the listening party chat on Sunday when I gash more praise on you
  23. Larry, it seems that most of the community hate spawned from Sonic Retro, which I have to say was one of the most disturbing things I have seen as a musician. There are hinters lying around elsewhere too, just got to google them out. O.o As for resubbing "Hogtied", I may be annoyed that a SECOND passed arrangement of mine got retracted but I'm determined to push for a revision to go onto the site. However, with Brandon taking the news a lot worse than me, I don't know if the OCR version may or may not feature a completely different collab partner. But no matter what, I'm determined to succeed x)
  24. "Them Bones" from Alice in Chains reminds me of the Mother Brain battle in Super Metroid, partially due to them both having the same time signature and similar chord progressions/styles in the verses. O.o
  25. Happy birthday not only to Will, but also to Flik as well! Make sure you have a good time
