Mustin Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Interestingly enough, They Might Be Giants is the EXACT reason I have spelled the word "sexxy" for the past 11 years. Nice work on DJP's part. Thanks for the kind words and promotion! Quote
MechaFone Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 30 seconds in and I have to say........I likey. Now that bass solo. Mmm. Phat beats. Funky. Sagat really is a smooth, sexxy thai gai. Quote
big giant circles Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 This is slick. Really tight groove going on, good funk factor. Mustin doesn't disappoint. This definitely belongs on a "chill playlist." Quote
SnappleMan Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Great chill song, but doesn't do it for me in terms of arrangement. All the elements that made the original so great are gone, replaced by a completely different song that slightly follows the originals bassline. In terms of production it's good, I would have taken care to keep the low mids of the guitars under control, but otherwise good. But the arrangement doesn't meet the 50/50 rule OCR seems to hold so dear. Quote
Liontamer Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 But the arrangement doesn't meet the 50/50 rule OCR seems to hold so dear. Nah, the original is used more than half the time: melody, countermelody and bassline. :39-1:13 - bassline 1:14.5-1:32 - melody, bassline 1:32-1:49 - melody, bassline, countermelody 1:49-1:57 - bassline 2:34-2:51 - bassline, countermelody 2:51-3:08 - melody, bassline 3:09-3:26 - countermelody 3:26-3:36 - liberal melody 3:40-3:46 - liberal melody There was also the very light sustained string in the background, starting at 1:14, mimicking the sustained string in the original. The irony of Mustin getting this criticism after he's done it to other tracks here isn't lost on me. Quote
JJT Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 But the arrangement doesn't meet the 50/50 rule OCR seems to hold so dear. Not every judge adheres to the 50/50 thing. I sure didn't. Yeah, yeah, offtopic. Quote
DJMetal Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I had to back and listen to the original for this one. I'm not all that familiar with Sagat's music, but having reviews both the mix and the source material, I love what you've done here Mustin. It is, like everyone says, extremely funky. A solid mix, and in my top five "Songs I could listen to for hours on repeat without killing someone". Good Job. Quote

This is way below 50/50 in terms of preserving the original. Quote
Liontamer Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Oooook, you and Mustin can duke it out. I've already laid out why this is more than fine. Your ears are broken. Quote
Mustin Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Fight! Fight! Fight! [maniacal laughter] Fight for me! Fight for my love! [maniacal laughter ensues] Quote
Palpable Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Nice take on the theme, man. Keeps a lot of the groove of the original, while messing with the melody. Very chill. I really like those panning delay effects you've got on the guitar too. Quote
noTuX Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 The first 10 times I listen to this mix, I could not figure out the source tune to save my life. Its really buried down under all of that smooth sexxyness. Then I read the title and thought about what country the characters are from in the game, and was like, Love this one and I'd like to hear more. Quote
Salluz Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Unique, man, and not of any mystique, crazy, avant-garde bullshit I expect to hear on the radio on the daily. Everything was mellow, proportional, catchy... The mix held (no, increased) it's ability to be both deep and pleasurable. Quote
Martin Penwald Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 What a strange little mix this is. The first few times I listened to it, I thought that it is way too liberal. But before I knew it, I would wake up in the morning, humming the tune to myself. Other than that, the overall smoothness of the song is wonderful, and it's definitely going on my jazzy/chill-out remix playlist. It took some time to grow on me, but now all I can say is "Well done, and thank you". Quote
Mtlbro Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Cool bass solo, and I dig the bells(?) and how they play off the guitar work. Groovy baby Quote
OceansAndrew Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 everything sounds like it should on this one. The extended bass vamp really had me anticipating the beats, and they fit in perfectly. Great mood to this one, it's languid and smooth, and the performances are great. I love the counterpoint and live performances make this great. Excellent work all around. Quote
Crulex Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 So smooth and chill, absolutely lovely. Perfect for a chill, relaxing rest session. Really nice all around. Quote
