m68030 Posted May 16, 2002 Share Posted May 16, 2002 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Gerudo JV' Clean synths and sharp arrangement make this remix a nice little track. On top of being a great theme by itself, this remix makes nice use of a minimal lead line over some nice drum works. The tom hits are a bit loud, but that's just me griping. What I meant is that it could have used a bit more differentiation from the main melody, which is the same version of the Gerudo theme over and over. In fact, this one is very good... probably my favorite Gerudo Valley theme. I do agree that it's not extremely imaginative, but I still think it's great. Everyone knows the Gerudo Valley theme, and there are a lot of remixes of it on the site, so a mix of it has to be something really special to get noticed. This mix takes a minimalist approach for the first third, content on grooving to the chord progression, with the drums firmly in front, but eventually brings in a synth guitar with the melody that sounds a little fakish, but is decent enough. The brass is also a little weak, samplewise, but I think the reason the brass and guitar stand out is that the rest of the synths fit the drums well, making the instruments that should be real sound extra fake. Rozovian Posted December 6, 2007 Share Posted December 6, 2007 I like the drums. It's minimalistic, and feels very much like a remix, in the in-between traditional and ReMix sense. Not much original content, but it doesn't need it. While the isntruments are fakish, the theme and how the remixer treated it isn't pretentious enough for the simple synths and samples to matter. That's what I think, when hearing it to review. I've heard it before, and haven't really listened to it since. A sound update and recorded guitars and trumpet would make it really cool. I'm not crazy about the minimalist take overall, but it works for the theme. Not my favorite Gerudo mix, but it has it's charms, and it's worth having around. The instruments are good enough, the bass sounds good especially, but the guitars sound fake, too fake. I would have just used something else instead if you couldn't get them to sound more realistic. One thing that bugs me is the chord sequence; it make the song seem a little slow , especially in the beginning. Your choice of instruments for the melody is great, and they switch between each other very smoothly. I also liked the drum solo in the end. (oooo, exploitable) I give it 8.5 out of 10. Unfortunately, the samples sound quite fake to me now, and the arrangement is fairly straightforward, which is ok. The background beat & backing compliment well with the straightforward progression of the melody, although some of the background instrumentation could've been brought out more like the guitar. So I've gone out of my way to listen to many a versions of the Gerudo Valley theme, which I feel is just about on the level of Terra or Schala or Ice Cap or Time Circuits when it comes to how many people take it on. Which means a lot of what people have done... has already been done. *yawn* But! This piece is different, so props there. I'm also very happy that the beginning from the original wasn't cut out. I've heard various arrangements that cut it out completely to dive into the main melody, and while I love the main melody, I feel you gotta lead up to it. In this piece, there's certainly a lead, however... I felt it a little repetitive, but I think that might not necessarily be a fault of the piece, but moreso that I'm not one of those people who are really into percussion. Personally I would have liked to have heard the main melody in this a little more, but that's just me. I can at least give credit that the percussion sounds good, and it's interesting. In any song, when the percussion is bad or overly repetitive, I just can't listen... I did not care for the brass part about 2:15 into the song. I'm not sure why. It just sounded a little too.. muffled, I think? I think for people who like music that emphasizes the percussion and beats, they'd really like this. Rexy Posted December 30, 2011 Share Posted December 30, 2011 Wow, a Christmas mix from 11 years ago xD I can't pass this one up. You'd think you'd be in for a straight cover of the source with the awkward acoustic guitar patch in the intro, though it soon turns itself into a more 80s-hiphop/rock-esque setup with the kind of sounds gone for, all the way down to the reversed percussion sounds, record scratches and everything. It's all written blatantly with MIDI patches, which I emphasized with Electron's MIDI-guitar-based source that there have been live guitarists extending a few months prior to release, though for the time they could be seen as fun and lively sounds but these days can be seen as painfully aged. The arrangement itself can similarly be seen as straight forward in regards to melodic arrangement, but the genre adaptation and firm writing on the accompaniment manages to give it a good kick. So this track may have aged considerably on both arrangement and production fronts, but at the time the execution managed to feel very solid and upbeat, and should be a good checkout if you just want a fun Gerudo Valley interpretation. It's a shame JV kind of vanished off the face of the earth, as the brief encounter I had with his work back in the day was very compelling to me, but I do hope he takes what he did with pride Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
