Terminal Chillocity, however, is an awesome term and I hope to use it in my everyday speech.
Bleck
I played a chunk of Sonic 4 today and despite being mostly neutral on my interpretations, it isn't really good at all. It feels like a fangame made in Game Maker. Also the music is just terrible.
EC2151
A friend of mine who is knowledgeable about games and game music posted about the music on another forum. Since I kinda agreed and had nothing to add, I'll just repost it: I absolutely refuse to believe the man who wrote this composed this garbage It's quite obvious with the track I just posted that Jun Senoue was trying to imitate Masato Nakamura's (Composer for Sonic 1 and 2) style and it just does not work. Senoue has a completely different style and that not only works well for him it works DAMN WELL for Sonic. I don't know what the hell happened. Maybe some producer at Sega told him to do that. Maybe Senoue himself for some odd reason figured that the old games all of a sudden sounded like complete shit and they all used the same exact horrible sounding synth in every goddamn song. Maybe he just figured if he slapped in the Sonic 1 and 2 drums (Psst, the drums you used in Sonic 3 and 3D Blast were a hell of a lot better, by the way, Mr. Senoue!) it would pass for the "It sounds like old Sonic" test. And hell, what am I saying? A lot of people fell for it.

wildfire
I played the Sonic 4 demo. It's very disappointing. At least I enjoy playing old games over and over again, cause I feel that's the only way I'll get to play a good Sonic game.

Level 99
You know, I hear all of these complaints about the little things wrong with the game, that seemingly add up to a whole lot. I'm going to get it for PSN whenever I get the chance to see for myself, but speaking in gross generalities, Sega fans and ESPECIALLY Sonic fans are nearly impossibly hard to please. There are so many, that like so many different particulars about the games, that there's no way they can win over everyone. I think many people would agree that, regardless of whether or not you liked the 3d Sonic games, at least Sonic 4 Ep1 is a step in the right direction for the franchise. Understandably, the original team that created the Sonic from "the good ol' days" is long gone so there's no way that the original magic can be captured again. Even if it was, it'd probably not be seen as fresh besides being functional. I'm betting half the team that made Sonic 4 (the Sonic Team half) are so used to making the other, less-well-liked Sonic games that getting into this new gaming mentality is a slow process. DIMPS has shown that it at least knows some of the things that make Sonic work, and Sonic Team has shown scattered glimpses of hope in previous games, which was usually overshadowed by the more glaring issues. I wouldn't have expected a perfect follow up to S3&K on the first time out TRYING to follow it up in, what, 15 years? Sega has at least shown lately that it is keeping an open ear for the fanbase, so I would bet that Sonic 4 Ep2 will show much improvement. If not, then it was a lucky fluke, and I would lose that bet. I would say more, but I'll save additional comments for after I play Ep1. KyleJCrb
My main complaint about Sonic 4 is that it mostly copypastas things from the first 3 games (especially Sonic 2). It feels uninspired, like they looked at the best bits from the older games and just copied them directly, instead of looking for inspiration from the old games but creating something new. I completely understand Sonic Team playing it safe, (even though the Sonic "fandom" is probably the single worst fandom in existence and there is absolutely no way they can be pleased) but they could at least toss in some new environments, instead of just rehashing Green Hill/Casino Night/Sandopolis/Labyrinth/Metropolis/Death Egg. Also, the music is the most uninspiring and dull soundtrack I've heard in a Sonic game. Very disappointed in that, considering Jun Senoue is one of my favorite composers. Stevo, I will agree that Sonic 4 is a step in the right direction, but so far, it's only a very small step.
lazygecko
I think it is a legitimate problem and not just nitpicking when the engine with so many little problems. For example I've heard numerous complaints about the way rolling works, you will no longer gain any momentum while doing it to get out of things like U sections. That was a pretty commonly used mechanic in the first Sonic game, most notably Spring Yard zone. Should we really lower our standards that much, when there are free fan-made engines that trump Sonic 4 in polish? What I'd nitpick about is the graphics, which look like homemade 3DStudio material from the 90's. Then again it's likely what an actual Sonic sequel would have looked like back in the day during the pre-rendered 3D craze, but I wouldn't have liked it back then either. EC2151
Heck, Gecko, your Sega remix of the Sonic 4 music sounds a lot better than the actual Sonic 4 music. Just wanted to say that :3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6-1cGzPn3E Those physics... look pretty fucking terrible.
Maco70
I want to try this, but my xbox just red ringed. (great timing). I am as much of a sonic fan as the next guy, but I really have to question the fans at this point. While I would love some more genesis style games, they're not going to happen. I am not at all surprised that this game may not "feel" like older iterations. Hell, even ports of the original games didn't always feel right. Is the game fun and worth the cash? If yes, then buy and enjoy. If it doesn't meet the standards of nostalgia goggles, go blow the dust off your genesis and get back to what you really wanted. Devyn
On Sonic 4 - I like the controls, especially the air dash maneuver. I used to wish I had that ability in other games. Music is awesome in some areas, and meh in others. I don't know how I feel about this game. I just got accustomed last night, but I'll say this - Most of the complaints I'm hearing are the same ones I hear people make about the original Genesis Sonic games. If you're not hard on money - Give it a shot. Poor little Sega are trying to make it up to you.
Lunarfall
My biggest gripe with Sonic 4 is the zoom: you're zoomed in so much on Sonic you can barely see the areas around you compared to the old ones. I'm not even sure how else to describe it, I played Sonic 3 & Knuckles after it and it felt like I could see much more of what was going on. I'm actually surprised to see that few people even bothered bringing this point up. If there was a way to fix even that, I think I could enjoy Sonic 4 to a much larger extend than I did my first playthrough. The music is meh I guess except one of the boss themes (which was actually taken from an unused 3D blast MIDI).
JCvgluvr
This game is completely in tune with what made Sonic so great in the first place. Other than stiff controls (which I blame on the xbox controller), and sub-par music, I have ZERO complaints for this game. Yeah, that's right, a Sonic game where I have zero complaints......is that a pig I see, flying in the sky?

KyleJCrb
My main problem with this game, right here. That's the biggest issue. Seriously, I know that the view CAN zoom out (as shown in the Casino Streets boss), so why is it so ridiculously close?

noTuX
Most of the complaints I'm hearing are the same ones I hear people make about the original Genesis Sonic games. I have to agree here. I've seen some videos of the glitches people found on Sonic 4 and I remember seeing those same type of glitches while playing the earlier Sonic games. I've fallen through floors, ran completely through walls, died for no apparent reason, and many others. Especially if you're moving too fast. People are just making a big deal about glitches now because the want to find shit to bitch about. Its not like the game is unplayable (like Sonic 06:banghead:). No game is gonna be perfect. Play it, then give an opinion about it. If you dont want to play it, dont.
