OCR 'Must-Have Games' List: -Part TWO-
BardicKnowledge replied to sephfire's topic in General Discussion
Morrowind: YES (a real big one) Holy cow. This game caused me to fail my first semester of college, no joke. Never before had I spent time just wandering around in a video game enviroment (picking flowers and mushrooms, no less!) In any case, this massive game is still better in some respects than Oblivion, and did more for artistic setting in games than generations of previous games. Hooray, Morrowind! Call of Duty: YES A shooter that made you feel real emotional connections to characters and situations, had a good plot, and had great play mechancis to boot? The yes vote. -

Civ IV: YES It's amazing in all respects -- a game my fiancee can play and enjoy, a tour of music and world history, and with the expansions, I can even raise my own colonies! Badass. -
Damn -- this game is going to be so freaking amazing. I've gotta have it! What I want from single player is more stages like Melee's Adventure mode Level 1, where it's basically a platformer with Smash controls. I really enjoyed that level (and the others like it). Oh, and Sonic/Tails ftw. Sakurai would never announce something that big ahead of time...

Cobalt, I realize that the aerial dodge is still present -- there is an _added_ option of a ground dodge now. Or has it always been there and I just never take advantage of it?
-
I really want to try the online mode of Phantom Hourglass out with a decent player -- any takers? The FC is in my sig now -- e-mail / PM me if you want to play later today.
-
What everyone's opinion on the grounded 3-d dodge this time around? I have a feeling that I'm going to take a while to get used to it.

It's not too early to discuss HALLOWEEN, is it?

We're having a "Made in the 80's" themed party, and I am going as a giant Rubix cube -- my fiancee is going as the multi-colored Apple logo. -
The updates continue to impress me -- this game can't come out soon enough! The new videos aren't working for me yet though... In any case, my contribution to the debate comes in the form of a list of female characters that aren't oversexualized: Jade -- Beyond Good and Evil Claire Redfield -- Resident Evil Princess Zelda -- especially in OoT, but all of them The Fey Clan from Phoenix Wright -- the PW trilogy (in game 3, there is one reference to Mia's sexuality / good looks) Charlotte Aulin -- Castlevania PoR Jan Ors -- Jedi Knight II Jenna -- Golden Sun: TLA Olga -- MGS2 Meryl -- MGS1. Despite the fact that Snake makes something of her looks, she is the exact opposite of a typical VG female Yuna -- FFX original only...admittedly, they _did_ oversexualize her for the sequel. Note that avoiding "oversexualized" doesn't mean they have to look ugly or unusual -- my criteria is twofold: First, sexuality can't be their defining characteristic. Second, realistic proportions -- the Lara Croft / Dead or Alive concept of what a woman should be _is_ outdated. Also, I realize that this list isn't nearly as large as the list of games where women _are_ basically just sexual objects (Ninja Gaiden's Rachel especially comes to mind).

It's 1342. Absolutely -- I can't get enough of it right now. Glad to see that Nintendo still has the charm...
-
Nintendo actually put in some work on S&P, so I understand the raised price (translated menus and tutorials). The SMB2 game though is probably the .nes rip -- I doubt if they took the time to convert it from the FDS format before sending it our way (and I don't think Nintendo's NES emulator inside the Wii will play raw FDS in any case).

I've had the NES version of Mario 2 downloaded on my computer for some time, and I can recommend it -- I bought it on the VC today over my lunch hour. I'm going to get the Treasure shooter (thanks for the recommendation, RF) and will post a mini-review when I play it later tonight.

Megaman X4 -- YES The game brought one of the longest running franchises in gaming into the modern era with classic gameplay and a brand new twist in a fully playable Zero character with differentiated movelists and capabilities. This game also avoids the pitfalls the PSX sequels lose themselves in...but I'll discuss that when said sequels hit my voting table. Legend of Mana -- NO While I love the Mana series, I feel that this game doesn't have the charm that the original trilogy brings to the table. While Legend isn't a bad game by any means, it is not worthy of being on a "must-have" list when you see how high the bar is set for PSX RPGs. -
Are we basically out of first party characters to use in any case? Assuming no more Pokemon, no more Kirby, and that NoJ isn't going to give me any Startropics love...
-
This is _awesome_. Can anyone recommend the 64 shooter? Yes, I realize that I should buy it because it says Treasure...but I'm looking for someone to confirm that it's worth my $10.

The link about him supposedly being in GTA4 had a really funny response that needs to be posted here: E. Zachary Knight Says: September 18th, 2007 at 10:01 am Wow! Just Wow! Jack reads Game Informer. I thought he only trolled the internet...

Metal Gear Solid Theme by Tappy Iwase stolen??
BardicKnowledge replied to Strike911's topic in General Discussion
I don't think it's purposefully done, nor was there any intent of drawing from the Russian source. However, the comparisons are very easily made. With that said, I agree with DJP -- I'd like to hear what the composer has to say about it. Referencing classical music shouldn't be a problem in any case. -
Speaking of flight sims, a new LucasArts flight sim would make me happy. This is sad news -- I never owned Mechwarrior, but played 2 at a friend's house a lot.

I can't draw to save my life, but I managed to get a good looking sprite for my MKDS game. How to do it: Get an image of the Megaman character you want to draw, and zoom in until you can see individual pixels. Then just draw keeping that pattern in mind and you'll be close. I can't draw at all, so for my sprite (Butz as BlueMage from FF5) I just copied verbatim. You'll do well if you look at it up close for a while though.

I enjoyed the vast majority of the soundtrack (and was especially impressed they could coax such quality out of the GBA). My favorite is still Jenna's battle theme, which was just crazy good.
-
Indeed -- love the music to this one. Who's the vocalist?
-
The Rock has some killer music that sounds like MGS2 -- not surprising, given that Gregson-Williams had a hand in the score for both. Also, Gladiator has sweet music. Holy cow, it's good.

...or a Wii sequel to tie up the ending they gave us.

OCR 'Must-Have Games' List: -Part TWO-
BardicKnowledge replied to sephfire's topic in General Discussion
Sephfire, I'd like to make a request to split PC nominations into two categories: "old" and "new", if you will, with "new" being defined as everything after and including Unreal Tournament (Christmas season '99). That way it's easier to vote on things like the original Prince of Persia and Diablo 1 without having to consider a million newer and easily much better games. -
Having played it for a couple sessions now, is anyone else slightly underwhelmed? Don't get me wrong -- it's a solid game that I'll be playing for months, but it just doesn't seem like a full generational leap forward in gameplay when compared to Halo 2.

That's only half the story. The full quote is as follows: If you keep fighting with the same Pokémon, or if you change them out too often, it’s not so good for the Pokémon. So, you have to know when to switch, but....not too often? Seems like either everyone will have something to learn about this, or we're making a bigger deal out of it than we should be.
