OCR01739 - Super Metroid "Kindred"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Once again, Super Metroid provides some excellent source material. Both artists gave their best; zircon once again shows that he knows how to make a very atmospheric track (the bells, the bubbling and all the other noises in the background). Pixietrick's vocals add a lot; I was surprised at how well her singing communicates the source tune. Amazing stuff. -
Heh, the same happened to me in 1996. Been watching both summer and winter olympics ever since, spending hours in front of the TV every day. Seems the olympic games have found yet another victim.

Well, you can still use the comments once you have a better set-up or someone to collaborate with. Think about them as an investment into your future

I myself really like the flute; has a midi-ish tune to it, reminding me of old games. The synth playing the main melody is great, too. Don't like that one low instrument though (the one sounding like a rubber band you're playing with, only lower); it can become quite grating when using headphones.

OCR01737 - Wild Arms "A Symphonic Tale"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Listening to this song on headphones makes the problems with this recording obvious, but to be honest, it doesn't really matter that much. This is a very nicely arranged piece of music, and having it played by a live orchestra is great, despite the minor problems of the recording. Good job. -
Download this, you losers.

Well, I'm not one of the people who complained for pages I don't get this either. After all, they hand out double medals in swimming/track and field, too. I guess it's simply because you have scores that you strike out in gymnastics/diving etc, and if it's a tie, you can take the ones which weren't used in the first place. Still, a pretty dumb system. Come on, Ôsaka was almost exactly one year ago (end of august). A lot can happen in one year. But you're right; I was surprised by his lackluster performance, too. ------------------------------------------------- And now for something mostly unrelated: I was wondering about the way the USA arranges the medal standings. For as long as I can remember (been really watching Olympic games since 1996, so that'd be 12 years), the medal standing has always been sorted according to number of gold medals (at least here in Europe). Now, all of a sudden (it seems), it's sorted according to total number of medals. The TV station Eurosport even had a smill bit about this, interviewing some US sports journalist who claimed that it always has been this way in the US. Is this true? Confirm? Deny? Try again? Because all this "nu-uh, we're first" you see on the internet and in the US news has left Europeans (and even Australians, apparently) pretty bewildered.

And we are trying to help, talking about what we like and what we don't like about the mix. If your technical possibilities are limited, then that's that, but don't jump on us just because we don't cut you any slack due to your shitty computer.

OCR01738 - Sonic 3D Blast (SAT) "Day & Night"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really like the violin playing in the background. And "birdcussion" is always win. -
I like the beginning, simply because it's very different from what's to come, which makes the transition into the rock part of the song all the better. The piano part is a nice addition. Short but sweet, it doesn't overstay its welcome, and the transition back into rock was handled quite well, too. All in all, a very solid remix, though I sometimes feel as if the guitar is a tiny little tad too loud. But really, only a tiny little tad.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW We're being judged unfairly. Seriously, get over it. It's nothing new; the country where the event is happening has an advantage. I remember the commentators on Eurosport being absolutely speechless when Sarah Hughes got way too good scores at the Figure Skating World Championships in Washington, D.C. in 2003 (she placed sixth, though her performance should have gotten her tenth place at best). It's the same this time, only the other way around. Is it fair? No. Is it good? No. Would we be happier if it didn't happen? Yes. Is it likely to change? Unfortunately, no.
-
I don't think technical limitations automatically result in a rather repetitive and dull arrangement. Especially the later part of your song offers absolutely nothing new. Also, could be shitty myspace, but the drums sound really hollow to me. Needs much more meat.

Oh hey, nice. Gotta download it.

Goa? Not so much; I remember Goa being much more aggressive and powerful. On the arrangement side...I feel that you aren't using enough of the source tune; a little more sunset park zone (varied up a bit, that is) would be nice. As is, most of the track is fairly monotonous. Not to a degree where it becomes annoying (after all, it's trance), but there is some monotony. The first few seconds of the breakdown are too quiet; do something with it. Nice ending, btw. Overall, I'd say keep working on it. What you have so far is enjoyable, but you need to do some more work to get this to a really good level. Gonna keep it anyway.

OCR01735 - ToeJam & Earl "Bumpin'"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Joshua Morse's back, and he's back in style. Just as usual, the remix he has to offer is absolutely great. The arrangement, the choice of instruments (love the e-piano and the guitar), the beat...all of it gels perfectly. Once again, JM delivers a wonderfully groovy piece of music. Keep on bumpin', dude. -
First of, the arrangement here is very good. Although the track is over 6 minutes long, it never gets boring and keeps you interested throughout. Now, about the parts themselves...can't say I care too much about the action-blockbuster-movie-like strings in the beginning. However, since that was exactly what you were aiming for, you did a great job at evoking just that kind of blockbuster-feel, no matter whether I personally like it or not. Where this mix really shines, at least in my opinion, is the second part, starting at about 4:00. I love this part; it reminds me a lot of Pendulum. All in all, you did at good job at what you set out to do, and I love the second part. Well done.

Oh hey, this Zero Hour thingy is quite enjoyable. Love the shattering glass. Also, I don't know exactly why, but this song has a certain oldskoolish vibe to it. Probably because of some of the samples. However, this song almost seems as if you made a dark, brooding song and inserted a rather upbeat one in the middle, simply because everything from appr. 2:30 to about 4:30 on is just so much more upbeat and brighter than the first and last two minutes. I "blame" the pretty nice synth you're using there.

The problem with MySpace is that you can only download if you're a member, and some people simply aren't.

Splatterhouse 3 'Menu (Main Theme)'
Martin Penwald replied to beckett007's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The haunting voices at 2:15 are great. The whole track feels very BGM-ish, though, seeing as how there isn't any clear cut melody/climax here. While the strings sound fantastic, they (or rather the ebb and flow of them) can become a little grinding after some time. Nothing major, though. -
Or, you know, just host is somewhere else; it's not as if the internet wouldn't offer you enough other possibilities. Makes it easier for us to comment on your work, too, since we can focus on the track without having to take into consideration what you did on purpose and what is the result of bad compression.

OCR01731 - Final Fantasy X "Endless Skies"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Considering the blurriness of genre definitions when it comes to electronica, this whole discussion is moot IMO. About the mix at hand: I like it. I like it a lot. Even if it is a tiny little tad on the repetitive side of things, I really dig the atmosphere and the great beat it has. My only gripe is the piano section. While it works very well with the transition back into the trance part, the breakdown where the piano plays on its own seems a little empty to me. Good stuff, PR, and I hope to hear more from you. In fact, I think I'm going to listen to your C&C WIP now.
