OCR00644 - Lufia II "Of Sinistrals and Men"
OceansAndrew replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The more Lufia music the better, says I. There are a few production issues I have with this; I think the acoustic kick could be snappier, and something seems missing in tone of the guitar, maybe kick up the high end a little. The arrangement itself is very well thought out, however. The buildups are great and there is a distinct power to the procession, but the ending is way abrupt. I'm cool with a fadeout with just the harp; I think it works for this, but it happens too suddenly. Overall pretty sweet, and it's always good to hear music from the Lufia series. -
OCR00082 - Zelda II "Thelonius Temple"
OceansAndrew replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Damn, I am really impressed by this, even more so that it is such an old school track. I agree the piano is a bit thin before the combo comes in, but the playing throughout is beautifully expressive. This is one mix I missed along the way and I really regret it. Good thing I got a second chance to grab it. I love the power when the rhythm section comes in. Very understated but nice. It seems drum programming-wise that a little too much is going on, mostly with the hi-hat. Three armed drummer? I guess maybe the arch nemesis of Rick Allen. "Hey give that back!" Recommended for sure. -
OCR00662 - Ninja Gaiden "Vengeance"
OceansAndrew replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The guitar playing is very good. It's incredibly tight and clean. The arpeggios are forged of molten awesome. The production and length of the mix is complete ass though. Listening to his other mix, he kept the great playing skill and got rid of the abysmal production. Steer clear, IMO, guitar heroics be damned. -
OCR00006 - Phantasy Star III "Legacy"
OceansAndrew replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I think the flute sticks out a bit much in a few sections, and that a little more emotion could be added, in regards to dynamics, but for the age of the mix, this is good stuff, and well interpreted. The horn and midrange especially hold up the best to time, and I think to improve on this, some kettledrum rolls into cymbal crashes would be nice. Maybe DJP thought that would be a bit too cheesy? Would it? I guess we'll never know. We did get one cymbal crash near the middle though, which was nice. I think that the flute having the melody for the entire piece is what makes it seem a little off to me; normally to give the ear a break, the lead instrument changes out between sections, even with a soloist, like this seems to be. Despite it's age, this one still holds up pretty well. -
OCR00545 - Final Fantasy IV "Gold Chocobo's Casino"
OceansAndrew replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Not really diggin this one honestly. The chocobo theme in itself has been so remixed by the creator that just giving a new style to the theme isn't going to cut it. Combine that with a jackhammer approach to the melody on the xylephone or whatever percussive lead it is, and the cut before the fade at the ending, and it's not going to be something i like. The backing piano playing is very nice, as are the bass and drums, but the source combined with a horribly distracting melody sequencing just kills it for me. Sorry. -
I think part of the issue is that all the Kingdom hearts songs sound samey. Maybe it's just the actual samples used in the original soundtrack? They seem to be pretty subdued samples, and when you are dealing with subtle melodies, it makes it difficult to remember. My suggestion for your mix is maybe bring a few of the live bass drum hits into the song for a climax point or something.

OCR01520 - Chrono Cross "People Seized with Trance"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It took me forever to hear the original theme besides the opening part, but the journey to finding it was certainly entertaining. Vanilla trance? This is a trance blizzard with the whole damn dairy queen thrown in. Multiple counterpoint lines, well programmed synths, and though the bass drum and snare stay pretty constant, there are a lot of other percussive elements going on. Very engaging for trance, but doesn't sacrifice any dancability. Well played, sir. -
OCR00675 - Final Fantasy II "Town Tribute"
OceansAndrew replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I think the drums could come down a bit in both volume and reverb, and it's not too far removed from the original, but it does have a nice relaxed feeling. I like Bummerdudes' assesment of a cheerful town surrounded by thousands of monsters. Are they oblivious? Indifferent? Possibly just so cheerful from this song playing constantly that they don't allow any monsters in to mess up the phonograph. Anyways, nothing groundbreaking here, and the drums are a bit annoying to me, but the rest is nice and relaxing. -
OCR00180 - Punch-Out!! "Iron Mic Challenge"
OceansAndrew replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A contender that could have gone all the way to the heavyweight bout if only it had some lyrics (you like that analogy? I made it up myself. ). There is a ton of style and cool going on here. The ring bell and the speak and spell or whatever is awesome, and the little synth playing a variation of the "you got your ass knocked out" theme is very cool. I wish it would have had some lyrics and a bit more length though. -
OCR00600 - Combatribes "74 Floors"
OceansAndrew replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The opening record and synth ambience is very cool, and once the song starts, it's very nice. The drums at first seem pretty weak, especially the snare, with a tinny ride cymbal, but the beat shifts to a filtered style and is a little more tolerable. Everything else that is going on is very cool. Exploring sonic territory like this can be pretty painful, but there is plenty of melody going on as well to keep interest, and the soundscape is pretty involved. One minor issue is that the song cuts slightly before everything fades completely. A jarring way to end, and probably unintentional, but it doesn't ruin an otherwise cerebral and interesting mix. I like it. -
OCR00386 - Chrono Trigger "No Time"
OceansAndrew replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Though the instrumentation and general feel of the song remain unchanged, there is a very emotive quality to Jaxx's guitar playing that gives a more human face to the remix. Going from the original melody to more free-flowing sections of interpretation is very nice, and though I'd have proffered a rhythmic change up in there somewhere, it's a seemingly overlooked mix, possibly buried underneath all the other Chrono Trigger mixes. Recommended. -
OCR01598 - Jazz Jackrabbit 2 "Jackrabbit Transformer"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very well done, I'm a fan. The snares give it a regal feel, and the synths are great. I think the trumpet at the beginning is slightly strange sounding with some of the attacks being too homogenized, but its really just picking nits. The lead synth is killer, and that's where it really matters. Combined with a very dramatic, cinematic backing track, and you have a winner. I do like how you have some nice B sections that feature the percussion, and then go back to the lead. Makes me think of Armageddon or similar save-the-world movies. -
OCR00529 - Astyanax "Danger in Remlia"
OceansAndrew replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This track has been on my playlist ever since I went through every mix via the torrents a few years back. It's a good track, with interestingly cool synthwork. The drums feel a bit weak, but there is enough layering going on to keep them interesting enough; make no mistake, the synths are the star here. If anything, I think the mix may be a touch too long, or perhaps could have used the tail end a bit better to have a more satisfying ending. It seems that it's a little abrupt, but I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to that, so I can't fault it too much. -
The halftime with the choir could have been really sweet, but the lack of any builds or climaxes hurts it a ton, as does the seemingly off bass drum in that section. The fact that an ending was added is nice, but the cymbals seem kind of strange there. Overall, it just seems to be gray, washed out quasi- housetrance. Seriously, the breakdown near the end is the right direction to go in, it just needs a lot more work.

Very creative work here. A lot of Mutagene's stuff is hit-or-miss with me, but I think he is on to something cool here. I really like how there is the flooded soundfield effect going on in the background, but things still poke out here and there. The arrangement is very creative and varied, though I wouldn't mind a bit more of a distinct melody. The effects are very cool throughout, even the crappy horn sample sounds good with all the treatment it receives. Ending is a bit WTF abrupt, but thems the breaks I suppose.

OCR00210 - Mega Man 2 "Tekno Wily"
OceansAndrew replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very conservative in re-arranging, and i'm not digging the lead synths, but there is a reason this song is so remixed, as it's frickin sweet. Besides a rocked up "tekno" feel, this mix doesn't really grab me. I think I would have loved this when it was released, but time has taken it's toll. -
OCR00407 - Jurassic Park (GEN) "Raptor Waltz"
OceansAndrew replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A little too repetitive in the chord progression for my tastes, this could really use a B section. There are a decent amount of themes keeping this fresh, but a change-up section would be very welcome. Sound effects are decent, they don't bother me as much as most tacked-on effects do, and are tasteful. The atmosphere is nice and sufficiently tense, though this doesn't feel like a waltz to me, at least not until the beat comes in. Then i'm feeling it. Just needs a changeup section IMO. -
OCR01596 - Final Fantasy X "Twilight of Ivory"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a very killer track, and fits in well with the mini-flood of remixes that came out this weekend. I like how instead of constantly stacking more and more layers, things drift in and out. The sonic landscape is always shifting, and it makes the song feel more like a journey. The beat stays steady, despite the shifts. Melodically there are a lot of cool extra ideas. I am really liking this mix. The chord at :48ish doesn't bother me at all, and I didn't even notice the potential division among other listeners until I read about it. My take is that it is a passing tone that is resolved, and while i'm not going to write out the chord progression here at work and figure out if its "correct", it sounds good to me, and gives the passage a bit of extra color. However; that metallic snare at the beginning. No. I'll say it again; No. Doesn't add anything to the track and just tends to be annoying on repeat listens. Good thing it only lasts for about 5 seconds, if it had been used throughout the mix, it might have been a dealbreaker. -
OCR01594 - Final Doom "Hung Like a Pinky"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The musicbox really takes this mix from good to great. The atmosphere is intense and the beats are excellent, but it's the juxtaposition of the seemingly serene with the turbulent that makes this mix for me. The beginning started sort of like a pop song. I can't remember if it was Nsync or Backstreet or Britney; one of those; just the opening notes and the tone of the instrument. Take from that whatever, but regardless, this is a sweet song. Never really was a fan of the doom soundtracks but you've made me like at least this track. -
OCR01597 - Final Fantasy Adventure "Amanda's Tear"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The ending is a bit abrupt, but before that is some pretty awesome work. Intro strings build the chords really nicely and transition into the song proper pretty naturally. Backing pizzicato strings and pitchshifting synths sound great, and the cameo of The search for the sacred sword was sweet. The ending I really don't understand, as I think it could have used a larger buildup. The ending seems more natural after repeated listenings however. In conclusion, this is an amazing soundtrack and the more FFA mixes, the better, Mega Man be damned. -
OCR01595 - Contra "Feeding Frenzy"

One of my Favorite Goat tracks, this one really steps it up. Great playing and arrangement, this one will be a favorite of mine I think. -
OCR01592 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Malicious Fingers"

I've been a fan of this one since the project came out, and it still rocks. I am in love with all the synth solos and the guitars are ok too. -
I'm grabbing this now, I'll post feedback in a few days after I've listened. Thanks a lot

Hey Hazama, I really like your Suikoden 2 mix. I'd also like to take the opportunity to say that I totally said I was married a few pages back and got the big ol snub from BCG. ;_; Maybe for my 4th anniversary he can put me on the list as a gift.
