Anyone going for the Slash guitar?
Tensei replied to BluefoxIcy's topic in Music Composition & Production
$1000 for a Gibson copy o_O Might as well go and get a Gibson SG/Flying V instead, they end up around the same price where I'm at. Anyway, the only guitars that are viable for me to buy have a high quality double-locking tremolo, so no gibson/epiphone/strat/whatever for me, I'll stick to Ibanez (and possibly go for Jackson and ESP) -
You could always come hang with us in #ocrwip, we don't bite, much :3

..Which is why I attempted to emphasize the difference between a SOLO piano (where you obviously want the full sound with all the frequencies to come through), and a piano in a mix with guitars, bass and drums, where you will probably HAVE to roll off the lower end of the piano to prevent it from messing the mix up.
-
I don't think you 'get' EQ. It's not meant to personalize or otherwise improve the sound quality of the VST, if anything it actually degrades the sound quality because you shave off certain frequencies (cutting and rolling off is what EQ is used for mostly anyway), which is necessary to make it sit in the mix and not mask out other instruments too much. Think about how a solo piano would sound horrible if you did something like rolling off at 200 Hz, but when you place it in a rock mix it's almost necessary to do so, so it doesn't conflict with your bass, guitars and kick drum. tl;dr You fail again I'd love to hear one of your amazing EQ-less mixes then.

Nah, Hemo is usually right when it comes to music theory etc. You often only use a fifth as a harmony, which is why it sounds empty. Try to fill the harmonies out by adding at least major and minor thirds (in the string chords for example etc.). And yes, this would probably get rejected based on sample quality and lack of a real chord progression/cadence. Also, don't trick yourself into thinking that when a lot of people like your wip on the wip forums it's anything like close to submission. I actually had a 5-page long thread full of people saying how awesome that Castlevania wip was (including a jdgfgt!) and it still got rejected twice. Definitely pay attention to who's saying what and don't say Hemo's on crack just because he isn't swooning over your stuff like other <100 posts people here.

The only thing that I can think of that comes close to a 'rule of thumb' for eqing is to roll off the lower end on most of the instruments. The bass and the lower mid frequencies often tend to get swamped because there's a lot of instruments active in that range, so if you get that part of the frequency range right, the rest usually tends to be a breeze. Also, some other general pointers: - Cut, rather than boost - Only use EQ where you think it's necessary, don't think OMG ITS AN INSTRUMENT IT NEEDS EQ. - Listen a lot to your mix throughout the progress, save under different file names, and keep a good reference with your starting point. That way, when you screw up, you can always go back.

Black Mages or bust! Srsly, apart from the guitar solos black mages songs aren't that hard to learn, and they're amazing fun to play along.

By just playing songs you're only going to know how to play a lot of songs in a sloppy fashion, unless you have the discipline to actually sit down and listen through a song note for note until you can play the whole song perfectly with all the little subtleties. You definitely have to do some structured, self-critical metronome practice of different techniques to be able to execute them flawlessly at higher speeds. If you do this you'll find it's MUCH easier to pick up songs, rather than downloading the tab to master of puppets and attempting to get the intro riff up to speed. About the Fretboard mastery.. I'm not sure, do what works for you. For me, half of the time I don't even know what note or scale I'm playing, but I can hear I'm doing the right thing by listening to what I play and how it fits in relation to the song. I don't think knowing stuff like every note on the fretboard is necessary to be a good guitarist (look at Marty Friedman for example).

Okay now that I'm awake, here goes. CLIPPING! Pull down every knob at least 30% and increase the volume of your monitors during the mixing stage. Piano could do with being less mechanical, it's just going soft melody->LOUD CHORD->soft melody->LOUD CHORD. Voice is sequenced quite awkwardly as well, especially the note transitions sound off. And yeah, lack of direction, this mix isn't going places, but it sounds alright.

*whistles nonchalantly* You rang?

From experience, I can say you shouldn't start your remixing career with orchestral music if you don't have the skills to actually know what you're doing (Good samples are quite important too, though not a necessity). I can tell you possess neither so I strongly encourage you to start with a genre that's a bit easier to get into and work your way up from there. Yes, this DOES sound like a straight midi rip, except it's actually vastly inferior to the source due to the lack of dynamics, the necessary tempo change, interpretation and the laughable orchestration. Come on man, the whole song is at the exact same volume level, how can you make parts stand out if you do that? There is an abundance of sections that sound very empty because it's just something like blatty brass and ridiculous horror-flick-esque string marcato's. Textures, tonality and melodies are all the same as the source, where's the interpretation, where are the additional harmonies, where are the counter-melodies? No wonder this comes off as a midi rip, honestly, Fishy was on the right track here. IMO it should be prohibited for beginning remixers to use midi's as a base. =/ tl;dr version: Don't do anything orchestral as your first remix. Fake-edit: recommended reading

CALLING ALL REMIXERS: let me butcher your music!!!!
Tensei replied to DrumUltimA's topic in General Discussion
This sounds REALLY interesting. Even though it's not accepted (yet), feel free to use stuff (if you want to) from my Cavestory remix, which you seemed to quite like on IRC. Can't wait to hear what you'll come up with! -
Hah, I feel bad for you having no responses yet so I'll try my best even though this isn't exactly my forte. First off, great concept, a saxophone concerto is definitely an original twist on the somewhat stale orchestral genre. Great textures going on throughout and a fine orchestration as per your usual. My only gripe is that while this feels generally good throughout I can't help but feel it could be expanded. I would love to hear the woodwinds a bit more; IMO you're holding on to the Strings+ Brass too much, while a lot of instruments feel left-out, and the lack of variation in tone colour is what gives the backing orchestra the kind of cheesy epic movie score quality. This is only my personal preference though, so feel free to ignore it altogether, I'm just trying to give some nice feedback :3

OCR01678 - Conker's Bad Fur Day "Rhapsody in Poo"

Yeah I don't get the whole " OMG LYRICS SUCK". They were awesome in the original, and they're lifted to a whole new level here. Guess you need to have played the game to see the humor in it. Great job overall, going straight to my MP3 player. -
NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. Well actually, I agree it's kind of bland and generic Dragon-Forcification. I think I could do better =)
-
Actually, jdgfgts would No this because it doesn't match up to the standards (Too much sampling, weird flow etc.). Doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't like it, since it's not bad.
-
"Afternoon tea with Snappleman's Mom" Please, this mix should get accepted solely for the awesome t-shirt it would make. =3
-
At least I don't have arseworms, you shit-eating pile of fail. Oh, and I don't smell either, since I use this little thing called deodorant and perfume. And yes, your latest update is better than the one before that just like Christina Aguilera might make marginally better music than Britney Spears.

Wait, refresh my mind, was this thread called "All-Time hardest boss" or "let's name random game bosses"? How about you pick ONE boss you thought was the hardest evurr, not twenty. Anyway, I nominate Ballos from Cave Story. I don't play games very much and the whole hell level was already way over my head. When I managed to get to Ballos he would just kick my ass in a few hits. Also, you can't save before him, so you have to re-do the whole hell level. D=

This is known as the Cher-effect and requires some kind of pitch-shifting/auto-tuning software. The most important part of this effect AFAIK is the 'robotic' non-smooth transition between the notes which you can achieve by quantizing them to a specific pitch.

Wah-wah guitar...you listened to my suggestion! Of course, you already know how awesome I think this mix is. -
Lost inspiration and motivation, what now?
Tensei replied to NeoS's topic in Music Composition & Production
Beethoven definitely WASN'T tonedeaf. Even though he was deaf in the conventional sense of the word, I'm quite sure he was able to hear the music in his head before writing it down, thus still being able to translate the tones he heard in his mind onto paper, which can of course only be achieved by being able to discriminate between those tones and name them.
