Hey there's no reason to be so mean to me, I didn't say anything before this! I have feelings too you know. Woops, I shouldn't derail this. OCR has enhanced my life by giving me great music to listen to, by giving me people to bitch to/about on IRC and by inspiring me to try making music my profession.

We honestly don't need another megathread.

I couldn't agree more with Harmony on this. At this point, starting early with developing a good musical hearing will be invaluable for later on. By learning to transcribe by ear you'll get a very good image of how each individual elements like percussion and bass work in the context of a song, and what conventions you have to hold on to when you're sequencing them. I admit it slows your workflow down a lot, but you get back a lot for it; I spent my early remixing days tabbing out commercial Rock/Metal songs, and it was invaluable for my drum sequencing. Midi-ripping kind of promotes laziness and songs often tend to sound too coverish when they're based on a midi-rip.

VST or program that will audiosnap/quantize?

Simple solution, teach yourself to play on time and dont cheat by quantizing. -
Dude, wtf? "Genre OCR"? Explain!

Bloody Tears (and Another Termina)
Tensei replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hm, Ethnic percussion like that is unfortunately WAY out of my league, but I'd be more than happy to supplement the traditional drum kit if it's necessary. The bass is an electric, though it might indeed work depending on the tone (Which shouldn't be too much of a problem to dial into Guitar Rig 2, and I'm not too sure on how many available remixers there are with an actual acoustic bass). So, your call, I won't be offended at all if you don't need my schtuff :3 -

I can do live bass, depending on the difficulty of the material (A borrowed lefty bass, so yeah, I'm no pro on it, but I definitely have some skills). About the percussion, I have no clue what typical Irish percussion sounds like, but I do have Addictive Drums, so I can possibly put down some pretty authentical acoustic drumming where necessary. Contact me by PM or in this thread or on IRC or whatever if you want -
You have to use some creative googling to find out what this particular setup of Mahjong is called.

New Information on the Sonic RPG being developed by Bioware
Tensei replied to Subz1987's topic in General Discussion
If it were ANY other company (except maybe Black Isle or Diablo 1/2 era Blizzard) I'd say no, but I'm confident Bioware can actually pull this off. They're the ones who made Baldur's Gate and MDK 2 after all! -
guitar synth recommendations
Tensei replied to TheGuitarHero's topic in Music Composition & Production
Out of interest, (because your post pretty much proves I was wrong) are the clean samples really exactly the same as the distorted ones, except not recorded through a distorted amp? I'm still wondering about whether the guitar techniques that would only sound right on high gain (pinch harmonics, pickslides and the like) are present in the clean library as well. I guess it depends on whether the creator made the library with the usage of amp simulators in mind. -
Oh I just searched for an image of the boxart and put it up on a mirror. I honestly could care less what site it comes from, especially whether it's a 'good' or a 'bad' gaming site, since keeping track of gaming sites is the pinnacle of nerdiness IMO. Errr.. I could've sworn I re-hosted it at imageshack..but I guess not Ninja edit there we go! P.S. You should stop advertising for Mobygames with that quote, I mean, it's a 'bad' gaming site after all apparently..

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/2614/103378832300nd5.jpg I always thought the box-art was extremely cool. Turns out it had a bit of a Megaman-vibe going on with all the surreal imagery. Not so awesome anymore In retrospect it was actually pretty amazing! You could do all kinds of fancy stuff like upgrading your craft, buying new ships, lots of different weapons, and it had great (albeit very hard) gameplay. I should emulate it some time

CT 600 A.D Hoboa & About:Blank collaboration
Tensei replied to HoboKa's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The strings+ choral pads should be way more sustained and change on whole measures, as of now they sound off-beat and nonsensical compared to the piano. Piano needs humanization. Hey, decent-sounding percussion, about time! Crash is still weird. Ending is horribly off-key and make no sense whatsoever, I think you're trying to do some kind of key change, but problem with that is, if you don't know how to do it, it won't work. Chord progression in the background could be more interesting. -
THIS, THIS, VERY MUCH THIS!!!11 Oh god the memories, the nightmares I had from this game! Doing your best to tow that fuel cell to your mothership, while your own fuel is running low, you're getting shot at from all sides, and even gravity is pulling you down to your demise, is one of the most nerve-wrecking experiences you can have on your NES. Megaman II (gameboy) - guitarist needed, I guess...
Tensei replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Right, got it working, very basic, very sloppy, but should bring the right idea across, I tried to make the chords as elaborate as you wanted them to be, but I still think I should add the clean guitar during the intro. Anyway, I took a relatively clean guitar tone, needs moar gain? http://www.tindeck.com/audio/files/i/ilag-Megaman%20WIP.mp3 -
guitar synth recommendations
Tensei replied to TheGuitarHero's topic in Music Composition & Production
I'm going to be a dick here and say that the clean guitar version is still not the way I would go with this. Yes, you can create your own tone by using custom amps, but first of all, the site states that the clean samples have been recorded with a realistic amount of room ambiance, which is NOT something you want to hear through your amp. My second problem with clean samples through a distorted amp is the fact that the clean samples will MOST LIKELY (Correct me on this if I'm wrong) be recorded with a clean guitar in mind, thus you won't hear typical high gain effects along the lines of pickslides, unison bends, whammy bar antics and artifical/pinch harmonics. They may seem a bit futile, but believe me that these techniques are VERY important for anything resembling a convincing lead, and I'm quite sure you would be missing out on these if you go the clean guitar->amp modeller way. And finally, how often do you need to dial in another tone? I can confidently say that most recordings in one musical style, I've been using the same guitar tone, with often just some minor tweaks like less/more gain, a bit different EQing and if necessary added stompbox effects along the lines of Phasers, delay, reverb etc. Most of the variety comes from the post-processing. My point is, every guitarist has his own favorite tone, and won't deviate a whole lot from it on any short term. Yes, you might not be able to dial in some bluesy tweed tones, but you can definitely apply minor tweaks to the tone where necessary, so I guess it really depends on kind of music you want to make. In the end I guess it comes down to versatility vs. realism. Anyway, my 2 cents on this. -
Megaman II (gameboy) - guitarist needed, I guess...
Tensei replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Well yes I wanted to record the whole song, seems kind of odd to have the intro done by a real guitar, only to switch back to a sampled one during the verse and chorus and stuff, but it's your call. I meant that I can listen to it in my browser fully (when I'm lucky that is, it often stops loading at a certain point) but when I download by right click+ save it only downloads a small part. -

Ugh sorry to bother again, but I just can't seem to download the whole mp3, it always cuts off at around 700 kB, and I need the MP3 to see if the recordings line up etc. =/ -
Megaman II (gameboy) - guitarist needed, I guess...
Tensei replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I think I'm going to have to ask for a midi, the fading-in of the chugging guitar makes it really hard to determine when to start playing. I'll try to record it anyway, but it probably won't start at the exact same moment. -

Tensei replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I might have an idea to incorporate those chords. Why not have a clean guitar strum them over the distorted power chord chugga chugga? It would be enough to just 'imply' the tonality while the PMuted guitar keeps a steady rhythm. I think in the context of the intro it would definitely work, and when the beat comes in you can leave it out because the listener will have gotten used to the chords by then and fill them in for himself. -
guitar synth recommendations
Tensei replied to TheGuitarHero's topic in Music Composition & Production
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqGJ8y67SU8 As a guitarist I can safely say Prominy LPC is the closest I've hear a synth come to a real guitar. It's $350 for either the clean or the distorted version and $600 for the full version, though I'd personally only buy the distorted version (mostly because I almost never use clean guitar). As far as I can tell from the video it has a good variation between PMed and open notes, harmonics, vibrato, legato and basically everything you asked for. http://www.prominy.com/les.htm -

Hey, I listened to it a few times and I'm loving it. I could give it a shot and record the guitars for you. It would probably better if you simplified the chords to D5 and C5 though, it's very rare for a guitar with a good amount of distortion to play more complicated chords due to the amount of harmonic overtones you get from distortion (which would make the chords quite hard to hear, especially with palm muted chugga chugga) -
Edit: Reading is good for me

FIST OF THE NOSEHAIR!!!1 Seriously, if you haven't already, check out Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (or just Bobobo). It's the most batshit insane anime I have ever seen bar none ( and I've seen Excel Saga and FLCL so I have some comparison).
