  1. Also Sonata Arctica did a cover of I Want Out as well.
  2. You don't have to - it was Sixto's own decision, that's all.
  3. An old NoppZ mix! This has a nice vibe to it, but the samples really show their age here. Production in general could use an improvement here, although it's not as major of a problem as it is in a lot of older mixes from this time.
  4. I remember this song! I used to be a fan of it back in 2002 or so. Now? Not so much. The samples really show their dating, and the last 30 seconds or so were sort of a waste. The song just doesn't have enough substance as it is.
  5. I'm not quite sure what to say. 1:13 long, and the entire song consisting essentially one loop of the original source....boo.
  6. As much as this suffers in the production area, I definitely am a fan of the arrangement after all these years. My only area of concern is that the ending gives a hint that it could've gone longer.
  7. Samples are kinda bleh here - otherwise, this isn't actually so bad for such an old song with one of the trademark generic titles.
  8. We're really shooting for a release Dec. 11. It is possible we may not make the date, but I don't see it as an impossible task.
  9. Gonna warn you, that's a terrible date with MAGFest on the horizon.
  10. For some reason, I don't remember hearing this until it was talked about in #ocremix between Sixto and Steppo. Definitely a nice song though - it's not something you'd expect from the source material, taking a more upbeat source and turning it into a slower brooding atmospheric song.
  11. In the past few months, I've been on a quest to review all of the songs on OCR, starting with the least reviewed, so it just happened that I encountered that onslaught of threads with only 9 posts.
  12. Can't say I was a fan of this back then, and am not now. It's essentially a cover of the original.
  13. So I remember loving this back in 2001/2002, but it hasn't really aged well. Some of the samples are not so great, and the arrangement itself is short. Ah well...'tis good while it lasted!
  14. Oh man, crappy brass samples, vocals sounding waaaay too far in front & muffled, and silly/repetitive. Not a fan of this, even as a joke song - only 1:24 long too!
  15. Ah, the song that kicked off OCR! Samples sound old of course, and this song sort of just rambles on in a bit of a repetitive fashion. However...I don't think djp ever envisioned OCR becoming this big back then and lasting for so long. Much props, even if this song doesn't hold so well today!
  16. This is a pretty repetitive song that doesn't really go anywhere . I guess it's to be expected since this is ReMix #4, but you know, you wish it would do something fancier than repeat the melody, go instead to the loops, and then rinse and repeat. It doesn't help that the samples aren't terribly great either, but I guess that's the early OCR songs for ya.
  17. You know, I was really looking forward to a version of this particular source tune with the Tales project - it's easily one of my favorites from the original. With that said, I can't help but have a little disappointment with Sixto's approach here. It's very synth driven, and not in a good way. The synth has a sort of weak sound in terms of attack, and certainly isn't as effective as if say it focused more on his guitar playing. Now don't get me wrong, this is still nice in some ways, but I felt like Sixto could've done better with this track. That's right, high standards for Sixto!
  18. This song seems to start off odd with me - I think it might be the harpsichord being too muted, and perhaps some frequency range missing, making it sound unbalanced in some way, if that makes any sense. The guitar is also mixed strangely, or it could be the whole song in general. It really throws off the listenability on repeat for me.
  19. This is a fairly odd take on the original source. I have to agree with some of the others on this though - it definitely does seem too short. I think the main cause of this is that the song repeats a particular segment of the original motif, but doesn't develop it as fully as one might desire.
  20. Yeah, I chose not to comment on the genre butchering by some people. Those two songs in red are by Helloween.
  21. This is pretty relaxing - definitely like the soundscape created here. The only thing perhaps I had a bit of an issue with was that a few of the samples didn't really sound particularly the best, but loved the atmosphere and approach.
  22. I supposedly have more than 250 reviews, most done in the past few months - does that count?
  23. Apocalyptica* . They got their fame early on as a Metallica cover band with 4 cellos, but now they compose originals.
  24. I'll preface this with that I can't say I think highly of some of the bands listed in the OP, but eh. I'm more of a power metal guy, so my recommendations will lean more towards that. It's a genre that's more concept-oriented, typically fraught with high pitched melodic vocals, double bass pedals, and clean guitars with extensive soloing. Here's a taste of the genre (plus a Manowar song). Manowar - The Dawn of Battle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1b_9A2EFyA Angra - Nova Era: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1afeQAD2n8 Angra - Running Alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0FBDaP3mrQ Blind Guardian - I'm Alive: Blind Guardian - Lost in the Twilight Hall: Blind Guardian - Nightfall: Helloween - Guardians: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLMJ-mLzwUQ Helloween - I'm Alive: Helloween - I Want Out: Helloween - The Dark Ride: Gamma Ray - Rebellion From Dreamland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeiX6bf2OPI Gamma Ray - Anywhere in the Galaxy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cbnes-Q9ZE Kamelot - Memento Mori: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNfEOwMZMmU Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NrVwpBj59E , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrebS90qSAc&feature=related Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings: Sonata Arctica - Don't Say a Word: Symphony X - Domination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcP3uIAXE6k Children of Bodom - Mask of Sanity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj7oxkTwRiw And of course, there are some well-known bands it seems you didn't list. Iron Maiden - Wasted Years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwB9zg7Tbx8 Iron Maiden - Powerslave: Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3ZYFLRkug And some prog! Ayreon - Day Nine: Playground: Ayreon - The New Migrator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01adtQwgUM And here's a thrash song from one of the original pioneers!
