OCR Talkback Live! (Saturdays, 9PM EDT!)
Eino Keskitalo replied to DarkeSword's topic in General Discussion
I thought this was a really great Talkback, lots of fun stuff and also great tips etc for ReMixing. Abadoss is my new role model for not giving up on ReMixes. Looking forward for that Radical Dreamers revision, I already like it tons. I should've kept a list of all the topics & points mentioned that I thougt were good, there were many. --Eino -
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shell Shocked - History
Eino Keskitalo replied to KyleJCrb's topic in Projects
Yeah, I had to touch up our track a little since the rest of it was sounding so good. --Eino -
What are the games/pieces that made you really pay attention to video game music the first time? My chronological list would go (I'll mention five): 1. Street Fighter 2 This game was so huge for a good while. These two brothers I was friends with had a SNES, and lots of time was spent in great company playing the hell out of SF2 for SNES. I sucked but lamely claimed after losing that I had the most fun. The music obviously rocks, and I remember we listened to the sound test quite a bit, which I think made me pay specific attention to the music. 2. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest The first JRPG I saw (I think? This or Phantasy Star 3.) and I was really into it. The music for Bone Dungeon and especially the Winry Cave/Ice Pyramid sounded pretty mysterious to me, which for some reason was the atmosphere that impressed me the most. The Doom Castle & final boss music were quite cool too. 3. Final Fantasy IV FFIV was of course quite a step in complexity from FFMQ, even though it was the initial "FF2" US SNES release. I still remember digging the music with mysterious feeling the most, the music on the Moon really enhanced the feel of the final stages of the game. The SNES of those two friends certainly was a big influence for me as far as VGM goes. 4. Star Control 2 We had a PC without a sound card at home, and it was a huge surprise to hear the MOD music play through just the speaker. You were so used to hearing just the rather abrasive monophonic beeping from it.. impressive programming! The music was quite impressive in itself as well, from the powerful ominous intro, to the ambient washes of solar system exploration, the energetic hyperspace music, and of course the tunes for the alien encounters which contributed hugely to their character. 5. Pinball Fantasies This one (originally an Amiga title) also played MOD music right through the PC speaker. The boombastic intro tune made a huge impression and I was mighty pleased to have another game playing great music without a sound card. Digital Illusions came from the demoscene which shows in the excellent soundtrack. There was some good stuff that in retrospect I enjoyed & which added immensely to my enjoyment of the games themselves, but I wasn't very conscious about it at the time. I'd mention Castle of Illusion and Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap for Sega Master System, Mega Man games for NES, and also Grand Prix Circuit for PC - great melodies/riffs even on the speaker of the 286 that my dad brought from work to home for summer. But the above stuff really made me go "hey, the music's really good" and listen to it specifically. Discuss! --Eino

C-jeff — Big Steel Wheels (announcement)
Eino Keskitalo replied to C-jeff's topic in General Discussion
I previewed a few tracks and they sounded good . The excellent Preschtale is probably more my kind of a thing but I'll be grabbing this when I can. --Eino -
Happy birthday Bundeslang, and many thanks for running PRC for so long. Without it, I'd make perhaps a quarter of the music I'm making, and it wouldn't be half as good. --Eino

Yeah, I configure AdBlock to AdAllow on sites that have ads & I want to support, OCR included. It takes three clicks per site, not a big bother! andyeahthoseadsareterrible. Nice research Annie Felis --Eino

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues

Thanks for the reply Larry! There's a broken link in this mix's writeup: the "second time covering the main theme.." link is lacking the forward slash in the url. --Eino -

I'm happy to say I have voted. I didn't find the source very appealing but you folks did good. --Eino -
I dunno, but I was totally planning on toying with time signatures for my take. But that's unlikely to happen (as far as this compo round goes). (: --Eino

First time synth user--what can I improve?
Eino Keskitalo replied to x_loto's topic in Music Composition & Production
Hello fellow tracker (I use Renoise though). I actually like the "degrading" feel when the arpeggio goes up, gives it a nice texture. Yeah, the whole thing sounds like a pretty good start. The pad indeed has some nice "life" in it. Not sure if all that the pad plays really gels harmonically with the arpeggio though. Around 2:11 seemed a bit jarring, the idea of changing the chord to something like that is probably good, but you might want to try to adjust the arpeggio to fit into it or something. I think there may be some lower notes in the pad (like at 0:37? 1:40?) that also seem to clash a bit.. sounds also kinda cool at the same time. (I know you asked about synths specifically but anyway..) --Eino -

Fun show once again, the OU sturf with the Nerdapalooza stories was good. Also I thought it was interesting that many people's favourite own mixes were collabs. You guys were easily distracted from some of the questions though No matter, it was entertaining & informative, I didn't know about PRC history for instance. --Eino -

This is an excellent source tune. I love the rock rendition done by Axes Denied, and it's fun to find another take here. On to the arrangement itself: intro is sweet, the main lead is decent, there are some very nice touches and additions to the soundscape here and there. The point where the lead starts playing triplet-style, with the added stereo synth wash was a cool thing to build up. I liked the "strange synth percs" breakdown after it. And the synth solo at the end was a good way to wrap things up. I just wish the beat wasn't do damned loud in the mix, it's covering up everything else. But overall, the piece is quite fun to listen to, and it builds up towards the finale in a way that's worth learning from! --Eino -
OCR00906 - Sanxion "Overclocked"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was surprised to enjoy this song as much as I did, solid beat & groove and some nice sounds and interesting sfx. It's quite dated, but a fun listen nonetheless. The source is of course a classic, and from a single listen, it seems there was enough of it in the arrangement (the beat and bassline are quite similar in the original I thought). --Eino -

x68k's Akumajo Dracula is listed as a 2001 game, which is the PS1 version release year. X68000 version came out in 1993. wikipedia --Eino -
Interest certainly piqued, I've definitely heard this theme a few times, there's a lot you could do with this.. --Eino

The MM25 talkback was pretty cool, yeah. I'd like to see album directors in the talkback when albums get released. Some questions for next time: Q: What do you think of People's ReMixing Compo? Q: Judges: how long does it take to judge a piece? How many times do you need to listen through it to appraise it? I'm interested, because I find it takes me a loooong time to give proper feedback, especially if I feel the piece has issues. --Eino -
OCR02766 - Final Fantasy VI "Ghetto Palm"
Eino Keskitalo replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really liked the analogue feel to the synths, and the deliberate sparseness, they combine to quite a beautiful effect. Also takes the source to a really cool direction, which I thought was both natural and surprising. On the downside, I do have to agree with OA about the compression, it didn't sound very nice to me how the bass drum seems to scoop out the rest of the piece almost every time it hits. Well, aesthetically I wouldn't mind that much but on (these) headphones, I actually find it physically a bit uncomfortable. Despite that, a great refreshing track and I always appreciate a new tune from Radiowar. This is also quite inspiring towards my own music making, makes me want to try a similar approach - and I think it'll be a challenge to make such a restrained arrangement without making it sound empty. Good stuff! --Eino -

Hell yes, Kyle get in there. I watched the latest now to the end, another cool show! It was of course great to have djp in there, especially because 1. he's obviously been here from the start and also 2. it was cool to get a sense of the vision behind the site, past present & future straight from the pretzel. --Eino
