OCR02679 - Donkey Kong Country 3 (GBA) "Arichnophobia"
Flexstyle replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I realized after everything was released that everything else on the album that I mastered sounded great, but my own stuff was a bit hollow. I think that comes from the fact that I mixed and then mastered everything on the same speakers, and wasn't as ready to get my own stuff to that level at the time. I've matured a lot as an engineer since then, but I'm still very fond of this remix. Turn it up loud enough and the frequency holes go away, I promise! -

FF6 Balance & Ruin Kickstarter RELAUNCHED (and FUNDED)!
Flexstyle replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
Not early, no. That's the rights what was bought by them donations, sir! Don't worry, I'm pretty sure this thing is coming out either next week or the one after that, so you'll get your fill of FF6 incredawesomradness soon! -
Studio revamp time! Got me a new Ikea desk, and added another monitor, although I did discover the difference between "active" and "passive" DisplayPort adapters a bit ($15) too late. Protip: if you want to use more than two monitors, you'll need an active adapter. Oh, and I'm finally able to integrate my MPK49 into my actual studio setup, instead of an old, clunky Yamaha electric piano. Anyhoo, here's mah gear in all of its gloriousness! And of course, by "gloriousness" I mean "relative austerity."

Yeah, I didn't realize this until recently either, but that sounds like it's exactly what's gonna happen! -
OCR02678 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Thinking Cap"
Flexstyle replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's sparse, but I feel like this works pretty well. While Ice Cap tends to shine best in a very full arrangement, I still liked the little subtle stuff in here. That re-arrangement of the lead via the gameboy synth was well done, too. Nice work! -
Ooh, can't wait to see those pics! I've been thinking about using a closed-loop watercooling system for my next full build, so I'd love to see how you did with it.

Intimidation in music making software
Flexstyle replied to Necrox's topic in Music Composition & Production
What Skryp said, although I should elaborate and say that one of the best ways to grow as an artist here on OCR's forums is to take part in some of the competitions. You'll get a lot of feedback, become part of the community, and that way you'll have people who WANT to help you improve as an artist. Also, the Workshop forums are a great place to get feedback, too. But yeah, basically just keep doing it and trying to find ways to improve. It's taken me 7 years to get to where I'm at, and I already had a technical AND a musical background to begin with. -
I listened to this album like three times yesterday, and can safely say that I fully endorse these sounds!

OCR02673 - Bastion "A 'Kid-pella"
Flexstyle replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
In my defense, this is my favorite OST of all time. So I think I'm entitled to a bit o' emotion. Again, fantastic work! -

thirty seconds in, and i've got goosebumps and tears already. beautiful. -
I'm a big fan of my Akai MPK49, which has decent action, tons of built-in arpeggiator features, is built like a tank, all the knobs and buttons you could wish for, and even includes some drum pads for that sort of thing. They do also make a 61-key version with even more bells and whistles.

Mine's pretty basic: I try to be flexible in the styles of music I create. May end up using different aliases for different styles at some point, but this is my main "brand name," as it were.

Not sure why my track's still green--you both have the last thing I sent in, I'm sure of it.

If someone else wants my track, tell 'em to go for it. I still plan on doing it, but I'm not going to have any WIP in by the 1st.

I approve of these tasty tracks. -
I actually can't stand Big Bad Koopa or Forrest, and I enjoy dubstep when it's done right. Those are both produced terribly, though. Dubstep can be redeemed on the strength of melodics, production, or both, preferably.

OCR02660 - Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) "Permafrost"
Flexstyle replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I didn't want to make Glitch too big of a focal point; just wanted to use enough to throw some texture in there. Good ear! -
Yeeeeeaaaaahhh buddy, this is gonna be a good one. Also, not only will there be a panel at this event, but I'll be spinning a DJ set after the main attractions of the expo are finished--can you say MAD AWESOME AFTERPARTY?

1. Pikachu 2. Mudkip 3. Saren. I have played literally none of the games listed aside from the ones containing the characters in my selection. -
Found some time yesterday to sit down and at least put an endcap on my WIP, so DusK has a link to my final wav right now.
