  1. Yes, I think that's normal ('normal' meaning I do that, too).Ah, the days without sleep that I've had... I remember one time when I got up at 5:30am one day and didn't sleep until 4:00am the day after (that's 46 1/2 hour day, my friends; it doesn't quite beat the 80 hour mark, though - 48 hours is my limit, atm)... I woke up at 2:30pm the next day and I thought my clock was broken, so I tried to 'fix it' and go back to sleep (as I seriously thought it was something like 6:00am)... I think I missed four classes that day and came into my late afternoon class incredibly groggy... No sleep is awesome, isn't it?
  2. Well, what do you know, DD came in here to show us he is still alive. Way to go, thread. Surely it is, but it did it's job, all right . Alright, I'm all good; You may now get back to your 'life' (or whatever you call your excuse not to write for us anymore ). Stupid 'responsibilities'...
  3. I've noticed that a few forums have gotten more attention than before with this new layout (like 'REQUESTS' and 'REMIXING' - the activity has certainly increased significantly since the change). That's good news, for sure... However, although I cannot say for sure, I suspect that the good ol' WIP forum may not get as much attention due to the lack of it being in the forefront of the forums page. I guess time will tell; that would be my main complaint about the new setup, It could lead to fewer people in WIP. Ah well, we gain some and lose some - I believe the benefits outweigh the problems, in this case.
  4. Yes, Schala's theme works very well. As for all of my mistakes, I'm not familiar with any of the instruments that you listed me for being wrong with... probably why I attributed them to other instruments, lol. My bad. As for the guitar (I was talking about the guitar ) I believe the tone sort of threw me off. It makes the sound blend a little too much, making it sound mechanical, for me (That's personal preference, though - nothing wrong with the tone, technically). So was that a Didgeridoo at 1:52, there? I thought it was electronic, but now that you mention it... heh, it sounds very nice. I'm actually a huge fan of 'kick-the-shit-out-of-you' sudden transitions. The psychological impact is awesome... just don't do it for every transition - keep it at once or twice per song to keep the full psychological impact.
  5. It's funny - I'd think that this source would be one of the 'over-mixed' sources on OCR (due to it's awesomeness), yet it only has two or three mixes... How sad. I find the instrumentation to be a bit out of place for the beginning. The guitar is a bit out of place (even if it will be real - it just sounds slapped onto the song, as it is), the pan flute clashes against the guitar, at this point (not note wise, just instrumentation-wise), and the strings are a bit bland. I really like the idea presented at 1:52, though. Very interesting 'Asian' sound to that, combined with some electronic awesomeness. The pan flute is awesome from this point on, as well. If it were me I'd actually start the song there and develop those ideas - that's where it really starts to get going, for me .
  6. Damnit, I wish you would submit to the ORC competitions (link in my sig), this would be an incredible midi to remix for it! Hell, screw the ORC - I may or may not give something a shot, here, anyway As for counterpoint ideas, I don't know if Counterpoint would quite do this justice - however, being the avid Counterpoint fan I am I await what your rendition will sound like with anticipation, OA. As for your dry spells, just listen to more music (and really listen to what the music is doing) - you'll find that eventually you'll hear something that you say 'Hey, why didn't they do this instead?', try it yourself and find out you've just composed something new. Don't throw yourself out of the race just yet - you obviously have the resources (to write midi, which is my favorite medium) and you have some obvious skill, here. The 'creativity' will come in time - don't give up! Don't be hatin'.
  7. My my, no one's entering?! This makes me sad. I'll get something up here, have no fear. Maybe. I put a link to ThaSauce in my signature, by the way, for anyone that needs it.
  8. Maybe, but I'm a western realm player before the patch goes up... and I'll need to start a new guy (I'm still a bit rusty... and careless ).
  9. Louder bass is better. However, could you turn the portamento down on it? It sounds just a little goofy as it is. It sounds like it sweeps up to every note (which doesn't happen on the bass, normally).
  10. Well, sadly your all probably right. I hate to see prospective composers walk away from a great craft due to pride and stupidity, but it's where this kind of thing leads up to (basically agreeing with Snappleman, here). Hey, maybe he'll leave for a while and come back when he musically matures a bit (fat chance, though...). I did get a good quote for my signature from this thread, though - at least SOMETHING good came out of all this .
  11. And yours, as well, Prophecy. Actually, yours is probably worse than mine was (ear infection > cold/flu imo, especially with a composer/remixer). Mine was simply an excuse not to put 100% into my remix .Go, pick an awesome mix for PRC!
  12. Thanks Willrock! That would've bug the hell out of me trying to figure that one out. Youtube... Why didn't I think of that?! Yes, this sounds exactly like the Silver Surfer music, and that's my favorite soundtrack on the NES (the megaman series doesn't even hold up to it - that's pretty incredible). Much love is going to that Wolverine track as well, atm. Sweet, sweet Follin... Why couldn't you do music for purely awesome games (making them even more awesome) rather than making incredible music for terrible games (making them somewhat decent)? Quite a predicament, there (probably why he quit ).
  13. The grace note at 0:14 bleeds into the next note too much - it sounds like a wrong note, as it is. Cut the grace note extremely short. Also, the melody clashes with the harmonies terribly there (the last note of the phrase should be a half step up from that). At 0:20 the melody just sounds out of tune with the harmonies. The repeat has those same problems, too. Those are the notes throwing people off, here. Personally, I don't think it's too bad, myself, other than those bad notes (although the drums are a bit cliche to my ears, but it doesn't bother me that much).
  14. Holy shit, what is the song at 6:32 of the X-men AVGN? I'm making a judgement call, here - a track that amazing sounds like a Follin song, for me, in it's pure bliss. I could be wrong, though, and I'm incredibly curious. Does anyone know anything about that song (I'm guessing it's from the Wolverine game, but I don't own it so I can't tell)?
  15. Here's my comments on that from the voting portion of PRC... The EQing was the only real problem, in my opinion. Otherwise the quirky nature of the music has a real charm that I can't deny - I liked it, in general, it just needed some time put into the mastering stage. It sounds raw, atm.Whether or not your going to tinker with this is irrelevant, though - it's still great .
  16. Which instruments? The brass sounds nice and wet, but a lot of the others are very dry (like the bass). They could use some more, in general, imo. It could be the type of reverb your using, too, so perhaps a different setting or reverb plugin is what's needed, here. As for the bass, you don't need them to be prominent if you don't want them to be, but they could be brought out a bit more than they are (that should make us bass-loving heathens happy). I know what you mean - just a touch would do.
  17. Alright, James, get this through you mind - the people here are trying to help. They tell you what sounds bad so you may fix it and not have it sound bad anymore. Listen to the people here - they know what they're talking about. Everything that I say basically confirms what they're saying, so this isn't anything new. Your mix is not perfect. It, in fact, has a long way to go before achieving that status. It's repetitive, the samples are mediocre (could be made up for with the proper use of reverb, btw), nothing stands out as a theme so the mixing could use an incredible amount of work (please take some time disambiguating the instrumentation, here - nothing is in the forefront nor background - the song sounds like mud, due to this) and finally (and most importantly) I can't find anything new in the music, thus claiming it as yours is pretty close to plagerism. You may be under the impression that it sounds good right now because the source was amazing and you practically repeat it note-for-note (with a few instruments added here and there). It's not your mix, right now - it's Nobuo Uematsu's music that sounds good. We need something that's involves your own rendition of the music in here (the bits you've added do not change the original nearly enough). By the way, I like the solo for the guitar starting at 0:51 seconds, but it is in the background so it doesn't sound like a solo (again, the mixing is terrible). If you don't like constructive criticism (which is all you've gotten here) then I highly recommend not getting into music, at all. I'm serious. Everyone needs constructive criticism to grow as musicians, so if you don't use it your hindering your growth, thus leaving you as a stagnate, mediocre composer for the rest of your days. As much as you don't like it Tensei-san nailed it on the head - your picking and choosing what you like, not considering all of the criticism given. What are your qualifications? What gives you the right to tell people they don't know what they're talking about (and disregard the advice that they spent their time and effort trying to give)? What you've said in this forum shows us you need to mature a bit before posting again - and don't take this lightly, either. Snappleman, that's a great bit of wisdom, there - it's now in my sig. My brother says the same thing... I agree with it completely.
  18. I'd definitely say it's an improvement from the last iteration, that's for sure. I like the composition of this - it's different and interesting (and, oh how so un-Hoboka of you - the source is very solid in this mix!). The end just seems to... end and it doesn't settle well for my ears. The samples are quite terrible, though - I understand how that is (I only use out of the box samples for Reason myself, atm). You need reverb for the samples. This mix is incredibly dry, and reverb would be a godsend for this, here. I agree with Hewhoisiam on the bass - it needs to be stronger. We needs the bass to be prominent in this mix. It just isn't the same with it in the background. Mucho gusto improvement on the last one you did - it's quite fun to listen to, as it is. Still room for improvement, though.
  19. Interesting, but I don't know if the minor flavor goes well with the song, at the moment. I think it's the fact that the original moves around so much with the harmonies while your mix is static in that area. For example, from 0:34 - 0:52 the hamonic motion is very, very static (I believe one chord with the bass leaping from place to place - normally a chord change but as nothing else follows suit it just sounds like decoration), while the original would have had eight chord changes. I don't mind that it's in minor (actually, it's a cool idea), but the lack of motion kills the mix for me, atm. I also am against the phrygian feel you've got throughout. I know you moved the bass up a 3rd, but don't use the lowered 2nd for the song - it really sounds out of place, in this context. Make it a minor (aeolian) scale, not a phrygian, please. When the song moves out of the source to your own stuff it's pretty good (although I'm not for the step own bass motion, myself - try moving it down a fourth instead and see how that sounds for you). When the source comes in again, though, it seems to return to that static harmonic stuff. Changing the chords like the original (just not to the same chords as the original) could also fix the dissonance that Snappleman hears (using the static chords causes the dissonance, I believe). The double time at 1:38 was awesome, though. Yay, I haven't heard you here for a while, now. I've got my eye on this track - it potentially could be quite good as long as you fix the harmonic motions (and that guitar, yuck - you know that, though).
  20. Wow, I'm surprised mine fared as well as it did (especially against Prophecy's mix, which I personally agree was superior to mine, this time). Well I'll shoot for the stars next time, then (and don't worry, I won't make you do the hammer theme from DK, if it ever comes down to it ). If my song sounded unfinished... well, I lost the enthusiasm due to my own sickness (now developing into a fever... I wonder if I'z gots the Swine sickness! Paranoia, lol), so I felt the need to cut it short and try to get some sleep, for once '~'. Sorry, GLL I noticed a lot of people didn't like Prophecy's stops in his music... I don't know, that was the part that I really liked about it, myself. Silence is an instrument people rarely use, so kudos, Prophecy .
  21. I don't think it counts... It sounds like he's just a remixer of sorts posting his stuff. He does claim the work for himself and it isn't the original soundtrack so I don't think it's wrong to assume he made it. Then again if you know who really made the songs then we have a contender, here (although the response here may not be as violent as before, as it isn't OCR music).
  22. I don't think that qualifies as a 'sin', does it? It just shows that you had better things to do than try to beef your characters out past over 5 hours... Besides, it implies that you beat Ruby, right? I haven't beaten the weapons, either. Ah well, life moves on.
  23. By the way, this is one of the best wasted lunches I've ever seen. What do you do for your productive lunches? Wait, Holonic consumes you then, right ?
  24. Strangely enough, this alias comes from some project I was (actually still am) a part of - and I like it enough where I won't change it, either. However, when some of my choral music gets published it'll probably be under my real name (it looks weird having 'Gario' posted as the author of contemporary music :/ ). When will I publish my stuff? When I get a working copy of Sibelius (hopefully very soon) and the permission of the people who wrote the original texts (sadly, Charles Causley died recently and I have no clue who his estate belongs to, now... the other pieces I have no problem with, however). Your not a democrat, AD? Seriously??
