Oh, I had an idea for a remix of this sitting in the back of my head for quite some time. I might participate again (yeah, it's been some time)

In the four years that this topic took place, you could have been learning how to make music. I learned how to make music I was happy with in 2 years.

    Tangledeep is now on Kickstarter!
We're raising money for extra animation polish like walking & attacking animations, plus special guest composers like Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu 3) who is already onboard!!! If you want to get access to pre-release builds after April, get the digital soundtrack, Steam key, or immortalize yourself in the game, check out the campaign!
    WHAT'S TANGLEDEEP
It's a 16-bit, FF/Square-inspired dungeon crawler. A true roguelike that takes inspiration from classic western games and JRPGs alike. Tactical turn-based combat, procedural generation, deep customization, lots and lots of loot, and monsters to battle. I've been working on this for over a year now and I'm about 40% done - your feedback is appreciated! The game is playable on Mac and PC right now, but eventually will be on Linux and possibly consoles/mobile too.
I'm doing all the code & design for the game (along with music, of course) while @OA is doing beautiful UI, environments and tiles, and a couple other artists doing characters, battle FX, and items. We're hoping to release the game by the end of the year!
As of now, though the game is definitely shaping up, it's still pre-alpha with some placeholder art and lots of content yet to be made (and balancing to be done).

Today we have a wide spread of new art, polish, bug fixes, balance tweaks, and content. The biggest game experience changes are that you now start in the town, and you now have a permanent 'town portal' item that can be used anytime to return to town. You can then take a portal back to where you were. We're also experimenting with walking sprites - starting with the Hunter - which look pretty amazing, in my opinion!

The current cast of characters, monsters and NPCs. Some new art + palette improvements here!

A snapshot of the world as it looks now. Improved grass, trees, better lighting, better fog of war.

    Walking animation!?

Japanese RPG designers definitely took a lot of inspiration from early Ultimas & Wizardrys, those games were big hits over there. It's interesting (the Wikipedia article says) that the Famicom/NES version was tweaked quite a bit in gameplay, and also the music is new. I'm not a huge Ultima buff, I've played Ultima IV maybe halfway through on the PC. Still I feel like trying out the NES version of this game, just to see how much it differs from the western Ultima experience (that I'm no expert of). It might be an interesting link between early western RPGs and JRPGs.

like most others, I was also a lil cramped in my schedule. Sent Fenix the wip so its better than to hear nothing at all and have the other particpant(s) win by default. Meaningless victories are worse than being completely shutdown in the votes imo since there's nothing to gain from a default win.

Well, I did not have that much time, I only have some basic stuff, but the weekend is coming, so I'll work a lot on my entry then.

Ah goddamn it, I'm really busy, but I can't waste an opportunity for training. Ok here goes:
[“Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” - “Alucard” and “The Tragic Prince” - “Hero"].  I hope that's eligible, since this is not the "official" theme of Alucard

[“Illusion of Gaia” - “Dark Gaia" and “The Clash of Light and Shadow” - “Villain”].

Hi all, I've been reeled in as co-director.  So if Odai isn't available to respond, or if you anyone needs some feedback and whatnot, be sure to throw me a line via PM.  Terranigma is one of my favourite SNES games, so I'm heavily invested in getting this project done, equally as much as Odai is, no doubt.  Thanks!

Both "Pitiful Scion/Tragic Prince" and "Dracula's Castle" are Alucard's themes. "Dracula's Castle" is more famous than the other one, but mixing both could be great!

Hey, guys. So, I just found out about OCR yesterday and after tweeting them, they led me here. I've been admiring VGM since I was a kid but only started making mixes about six months ago. I hope to turn it into a professional thing soon. Glad to be here and can't wait to meet and work with you guys, whoever that may be lol

Sources and brackets are finished and in the first post.  Please review to make sure your selection is correct and that the timing works for you.
Also please note the area title assigned to your source.  You'll be using that when you name your remix submission files.
    Edit: Missed this earlier, somehow:
Yeah, that was before I started frequenting these forums, but I did notice that from reading the archives.  That's why I'm doing a point-based losers' bracket, so that if someone is too fatigued to continue, their dropping out won't be a free pass for their opponent--and if they want to jump back in later on, they can.  That's also why I'm calling the winner of the winners' bracket a tournament victor even if they lose the final round (thus effectively making that round optional for them), but the winner of the losers' bracket has a shot at earning co-winner.
Also, since I'd like to make an OCR-I out of this for Castlevania's 30th anniversary, I want to give people who drop out more chances to create something they like well enough to include.

Hey guys, MindWanderer is starting a nice Castlevania compo à la DarkeSword/FenixDown (Mega Man and Final Fantasy Compos). It's buried under other compos and only 2-3 people already signed up for it. It'd be a shame not to have more contestants, especially seeing the number of people who entered Shariq's MM compos. Signups are closing in early January, so check it out quickly.
(@Mods: It's maybe a little spammy, but other compos started recruiting in Community, so I guess it's okay to do the same -- sorry if it's not okay. Plus I'd be a sad panda if no one enters it ;))

Yami got a reaction from djpretzel in Sweet Sixteen - Happy Birthday OCR!
Well, it was my ex-girlfriend who kind of introduced me to OCRemix, in 2004, she sent me some mixes from here. I rediscovered it in early 2006 when I was looking for some new music. I regularly visited and joined the community in about 2010, I'm not quite sure, when I decided to start making my own remixes and since then I'm here on a nearly daily basis. Thanks to this awesome community I've learned so much about music, and being here helps a lot when I'm feeling down. Since I heard my first remix, the remixes are a part of my life, in bad and in good times. I can't live without music, so I definitely couldn't live without OCRemix

And thank you djpretzel, DarkeSword and all of you judges and community workers for keeping this project alive, video game music wouldn't be the same without OCRemix

I also want to thank everyone for participating, and—more importantly—I want to thank everyone for making this a drama-free compo. Usually there's at least one instance of someone being a total poop, whining about how people are voting or complaining about other teams'/artists' music. This time around, we had none of that. Everyone was a good sport and supportive of each other. I'm glad that people had fun and were able to learn things and grow as artists.

Also, just to reiterate something I said a few weeks ago: if you're planning on submitting tracks you made for the SFRG to OCR, please include a source breakdown for the judges' benefit.

I'd also like to suggest someone (not me) maybe organize an album project using select tracks from this competition. There's a lot of insanely good music that came out of the SFRG, and I think that a pretty good package could be put together and dropped as a proper album (as opposed to the standard archival release I put out of compos). Give artists maybe a week or two to make any necessary revisions, gather updated and remastered WAVs, etc. I can put together some album art too, and we can drop this as an OCRI release.

I personally think that when you make music, especially for a non-profit kind of thing like ocr, it's actually really important to see as much reviews as possible to your remix. Not necessarily to improve, but because it can be really motivational to see people like your music. And then not just some "wow, I really like this", but at least a "wow, I really like this, because..." kind of response. My mum says she likes my music, but she can't give as fine a reason as a fellow vgm lover that actually knows what I'm remixing. Seeing people liking your stuff, and besides that also knowing what you're actually doing, is so much cooler than just hearing some random bloke saying he/she likes your mix. And I think that the review panel is a really good place for that kind of thing. As I'm relatively new to this place I don't know how it was in its days of supposed glory, but I do know that right now it isn't really as nice as it could be.
But, since I've never left a review myself, I don't really have any right to speak... Although, I think that after reading this topic I just might start doing it.
