  1. Okee-dokee, here's what I think of this one. I'm liking the groove that's goin' on. The pads and atmospherical paddy-type instruments and filtering effects are well executed. Some may have problems with the sythetic flute panning around the speakers and phasing in wierd directions, but I'm not one to be hatin' on it since I love effects. The violin sounds fake though, almost if not exactly like a Florenstan sound sample. Not a bad thing IMO, just something that would turn people off quite easily. The arrangement doesn't take it too far away from the original melody track. That needs to be more prominant in remixes. Good work there I've heard better stuff from SOC's gigantic collection of musics and remixes (and re-remixes of other artists' stuff), but this would definately make an official debute type track here. Good job, OverCoat.
  2. Indeed. I was wondering why he didn't get anything up here before...I guess it's all timing. I'll download and review it later once I'm done my gig on Saturday.
  3. I like what Darangen's has to offer. It's great to see someone get at least a few hits on this site while his other (just as good tracks IMO) get the boot in the Judges Decisions threads. That being said, I really like this song. It's an improvement over some of your other works. 9/10
  4. ha ha You summarized my review, Kadosho! I'm diggin' this one! I'll hand it to a Top Dogg Entertainment DJ at their next place I'll attend. EDIT: Woops. Maybe the title won't sit with them since they're play only contemporary Christian rap and rock.
  5. This remix is awesome stuff. Regarding the Sonic 2 Project, analoq alone is the full price of this collection if it ever goes on sale. Check out "Oil Spill" as well. It's got that Protricity type feel to the track.
  6. You said it, buddy! I thought Winamp was going to crash because of this track. Other than that, I did like the mix, but I was a little dissappointed because the original meldoy was drowned in the rest of the groove. It's creepy, man. I love it. Make another one, TO!
  7. This seems like an expanded version of the original, but dang! That voice has me sold! I'd love to hear more music from Jill in the future.
  8. The combination of guitar-work, drum and bass, and orchestral stuff blew me away. At first I thought this was going to be based off Rayman 2 as it had a feel to the game's soundtrack, but Prizm does a great job of fooling me. Yup, Bowser's anger is expressed profoundly in this song. Good work. If anyone else wants another Castle remix (even though it may not necessarily put this one to shame), try Dark Purple's: http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3007
  9. I love your stuff, CHM. And this is no exception. The guitars and drumwork are very tight. I don't have much to say except that this is a CLASSIC! Your best song yet, dogg!
  10. I'm not exactly a fan of death metal persay, but I like how this mix was done. I think the lyrics are posted on the VGMix page for this track if no one else notified the reviewers here. This track screams with quality and angst. There's alot of feeling. I'm not good with describing guitar-ish type mixes, but I believe Dennis is a master of what he does. Good job, fellow Winnipeger and welcome to OCR. Here's a cookie. EDIT: Never mind...no need to waste time looking for lyrics. Thanks Liontamer.
  11. Not bad. It's got quite a blend. This sounds more like house than dance just because of how the NES snare from the soundfont mixes in with the rest of the percussion. It's got that groovability while having that same repeating chord progression. Beats are good, the sax blew me away, and the piano adds a very nice touch. It honors the roots of the original Starman theme which is what I feel some of the newer OC Remixes don't do when they deviate from the original source and are just plastered with original uneeded solos, chords, and riffs. That is why this deserves appreciation. It's great to see a mix like this one return to OCR. Good job.
  12. Wow, it's good to see Prot took a break from DKC2 mixing and branched on to a game with Grit back when I was a kid. This has a great mixture of alot of stuff that I enjoy. The honky-tonky piano made me smile, the organ is great, the orchestral hits are wierd but they work. This mix shows that Protricity has a great sense of humour when it comes to musicianship even if things seem a little loud and unequalized, and too distorted for my taste, IMO. Most of it seems tracked as Dan B. stated before, but I can look past that with an open mind. What I see out of all this is a well-cooked receipe of the original quirk-ish track. This remix makes me hungry! I want more Neighborgurs!
  13. Understood. I can live with that. I too try to break away for normal hip-hop type rythums, but sometimes I can only do so much with what I got. Another reason besides lack of great samples and software (Acid Pro 4) is the fact I hate playing with synths and that's why your tracks put even my house music to shame. That's why I can sympathize. Now then, I love this track as well as your fast paced hip-hop styling one from last submission. It's got a good groove that's just hard to describe. Not much to say or critisize.
  14. For stings (solo), look for Cadenza or Florestan. For a reverse cymbal, search for sonic implants- it should be a demo sf2, so it's free. Well for a reverse cymbal, you can also just find a cymbal sample and uh...reverse it. What about the reversed attack of the crash. It sounds very awkward when I just leave it the way it is reversed.
  15. Of course he is more known for his rap... Probably "Niggaz 4 Life" to be specific since it was so "controversial" (Not really if you ask me, but some feel that way). Anyways, be it guitar or rapping, zyko puts out some awesome shit, and this is no exception. I think this remix sounds great, great guitar riffs, I especially like the ending. Only problem that I had was the repetitive drums, but that really didn't take too much away from the remix as a whole. Good stuff. This reminds me of his poker-face Sonic 2 remix, especially the chugging. It's more a jam than an actual song, but the bassline is so catchy even though it repeats itself over and over which makes you pay more attention to the wicked licks out of the guitar. I like the ending as well. The organ synth thing used is amazing. Thanks for the anticipation, Weed! Great jorb!
  16. I wasn't very happy with this one. There was a melodic hook in the original track that wasn't in there (for those of you who don't know the original version it's a bell like instrument that plays 16 times right before the strings fade in). The repetition of the beat and the cling-clang thing was getting on my nerves after 2 minutes of it going straight. Other than that, the sound effects were excellent, and the strings really fit the whole Kong experience. It needs touch-ups but what's good is really good.
  17. Wow. That's all I'm going to say for now. EDIT: Okay, now that I've listened to it, I'll talk more. I like how the piano and strings are done. The composition is excellent. I'm not too big on the filters involved, but I guess that's your style. It's not as wierd or interesting as Hunter's Community Chest, but it's still great. I like what you got going. Submit another.
  18. This sounds more like just an updated cover, which I love about it. The ska rythum is excellent and this shows that shadow is the mastermind behind playing EB tracks with his gitter. If only the organ solo was longer and there were some original melodic sections and I wish the song would keep going twice without fading out since the groove is excellent. But shadow's more a man that says "quality first, and novelty second." Explains why he didn't like my Battle 8 Remix.
  19. Interesting. It's ambient, so it stays true to the game. I need to listen to it a few more times before I can say wether I like it or not.
  20. That was the point. I have to agree that it does sound fake, but no matter what, it's very interesting. Really, I don't care if something sounds realistic, as long as there's been some good technical EQing to a point where my ears aren't bleeding, and as long as there's been some good, emotional, different or wacky things done in the arrangement. In other words, this is good in a fake different sort of way.
  21. One word to describe it: TIGHT! The percussion and bassline is top notch. The bassline is so catchy that it took me 50 or more listens before I got bored with the intro. Even though the instrumentation wasn't as enjoyable as FFA Willed Assault, this mix still has great flute-work. The turn-tablistic gating, reversing, and pull-backs are unatural but awesome! Ladies and gentlemen, if you know anyone that thinks techno, dance, or electronica's all just repetitive stuff, then let them listen to any track Ziwtra puts out and put that opinion to shame! Excellent ! 9.7/10 (-.3 as the instrumental was good but not ear catching).
  22. Wow, I am floored. Vigilante Danny B, and Weed are the Chronic Trio, yo! I've always loved Dan and Weed's tracks. Dan's got a great voice, Vigilante's guitar skillz are awesome, while zyko's rapping can grow on me on each listen. I find very little wrong with this mix as it takes the feel of Earthworm Jim to higher levels quite nicely "lyrics-wise". I'd like to see a VGMix rapper it will never be me, kids. I'm a man of message rather than spotlights actually step to zyko's skillz. While Niggaz 4 Life was focused on hip-hop/rap, this mix sticks many ingredients into the cauldron. Mixing, bending, and playing with genres in this fashion are what OC Remix is all about...(speaking to Protricity regarding his comment on "Niggaz"). Great stuff guys. OCR quality indeed.
  23. Just so y'all know, I'm only going to be back here once a week to review songs that make it here. Before I close off my connection with you guys, here's my extended thoughts on Niggaz 4 Life as my 200th post since my internet connection's being taken (I can't pay for it anymore so today's my last day). I reviewed this track over at VGMix since the contreversy was huge. I've always wanted to take on a rap mix and be the first to submit one, but I couldn't think of any good ideas of a good rap to do that would be related to a game. Give me another half year after my EP's done, and I'll see what I come up with. Congratulations zyko and Ubik on beating me to achieving a dream I wanted to have post here long ago and being the first to release the most contreversial rap remix in the VGRemixing Community's History. First off, I just need to say to some with a lack of historic education that if you have read the book "Of Mice and Men" 'nigga' or 'nigger' was used back in the 30s as a derogatory term for a black person named Crooks. Now 'nigga's used as a greeting or a hardcore substitute word for 'brotha.' The thing that caused alot of contreversy in rap is just that fact that genre's poetry speaks a different language that is foreign to alot of people even some people who are into rap hardcore. This language is that of the black people of the ghetto which uses many different types of slang words and abbreviations and codes to communicate incase the cops were in pursuit. Here are my thoughts on rap first of all (this song included). There are alot of rap songs out there that can be used to promote a decent message but are delivered in a fashion the faint of heart can hardly tolerate. A prime example of this is "F*** the Police" which was a song by Ice Tea where he curses the cops that are bumrushing or shooting innocent blacks. Ice Tea never meant to target all police officers, he was just talking about the ones who shed the blood of the innocent. Since June when I found this out, I've been trying to dumb down my personal rap lyrics so that people can understand what I'm saying, be careful what I say, so I keep the peotry going, and not offend people easily. But then again, the core of my messages I personally put out are what causes the contreversy I've got now. If rappers have a positive or worthwhile thing they want the public to hear (and rightfully it should be done) rappers should just belt it in a poetic method that will be more understandable and acceptable. Regarding zyko's rapping, I'm not saying eliminate the subtle poetry, but dumb it down just a little so more people can get the right message. And yes, a chunk of profane slang can be chucked in the trash. Luckily, this track doesn't suffer too much from it. Thus, I feel the word nigga would be best replaced just to avoid the whole bunch of hate-mail and posts you recieved before, even if it does have a good intention. Now we can talk about the song itself. Regarding the backing-beat/instrumental, Ubik's bass shuffling and sampling gave me the feeling that this was going to be so goofy. Everything's perfect here from the strings to the piano and harpsichord thingy. The beat was quite 808ish and this kind of machine pays tribute to some Dirty South thumping. Now there's just a few things I love about the rap in this song. the fact that there's sound effects and random shouting from zyko in the back make this thing energetic and funny. There are some cheesy lines like "Brass-helmeted nigga widda warrior resemblance," and "Whack niggaz comin' up with backpacks." I was floored by the Star War's reference about Asterix comparing himself as Yoda to the gang as Obi-Wons. Nice. And who can forget the dog eating dog on the farm being transformed into a firearm. Catchy. Unfortunately, some of the lyrics are a little too bruising as zyko talks about the enemies bleeding out of various places and bullets from gats (guns) going through peoples' ribcages. I'm not as bothered with the words as with Shael Riley's verse on River City Rap, but here and there, a few things can clean the mix up. Overall, the track wasn't too bad. The chorus was catchy, and I too find myself wanting to hum the words and replace the word "nigga" with brotha as Dhsu brought up earlier. Really,I feel the only thing that holds this back would be the word "Nigga" which can easily be relaced with a long list of other words I've conjured which I won't share. Sure the profanity can also be replaced, but zyko's the artist. Let him decide. 8/10
  24. I feel yo pain brotha. Winnipeg, Canada has got some good and bad studios. The good places are expensive while the better-costing/cheaper-priced studios just rip you off with crappy vocal production and mediocre instruments. Thanks for clearing things up regarding the lyrics BTW.
