  1. yeah, i was thinkin' vocoder as well. You could prolly get a better (read: cooler) sound than that with a vocoder.
  2. It really is a shame he had to die. It was also quite a shock. I remember seeing the Batman trailer and saying to myself, "I can't wait to see him in other roles later on down the line." I have heard that he was half way done on another production as star that had to stop filming... Which really sucks for the people involved with that as well.
  3. I totally agree about what was said about not trying to write exclusively OCR-based stuff. My abilities grew exponentially when i finally stopped trying to do OCR stuff and just played around and made little original songs. You can be pretty surprised at how well you can make a song by just fucking around. As for inspiration, I usually go out of my way to save up for some music goody that I've been wanting for a while and then splurge for it. If you concentrate on the new tech and try to use it to the best of your abilities, it can usually completely recreate how you think of music. I recently purchased Colossus and then went to make what I now consider my best song using mainly the samples in it. For me, experimenting with my library and layering sounds can usually give me incredible amounts of inspiration. Linked to that; I don't know how you mix, but if you use loops and pre-made stuff, just go out of your way to create something like what you would use a loop for out of your own layered samples. That gives me a lot of inspiration and makes me prouder of the songs i make. Also, I think your bigger problem might be that you're trying to submit trance music to OCR; trance music has to be incredibly well-produced and varied enough from the trance-standard arrangement to even be considered. For a lack of a better analogy, its like being the star of a high-school team and then competing at the Olympics. Try making music out of your comfort zone that doesn't really adhere to any standards other than a simple arrangement base. Even if you absolutely love trance/techno and are not so keen on other genres, making something like happy hardcore, country, or rap (ewww on all for me) can at the very least be fun and you can see music from a totally different perspective. Hope this helps!
  4. This is flippin' awesome. Very epic and amazingly well-produced. This definitely deserves full OST privileges. Almost has the God of War feel at the beginning but the rolling synth bass gives it a more sci-fi feel that gives the entire remix a hugely cohesive and original sound. Extremely well done, my friend. Definitely hear the StormDrum in it too
  5. See, I have the problem that i agree with both sides to some extent. The way I see it, adding vst support to reason is unnecessary not because of the instability issues, (because that really is just the vst's fault, not Reason's) but because most of the professionals that use Reason and a damn huge portion of the user base that I've talked to over there uses Reason as a massive vst in the first place. ReWire basically uses Reason as a vst in a host program BECAUSE it doesn't use vst's; its like having a vst in a vst. On the other hand, I agree that its rather strange that Reason has revamped a large number of the user's bigger complaints and not added vst. It would be nice to have a vst in Reason if that's all you use, but seriously, if you really do want to go far in music production, you can't confine yourself to the one program and bitch and complain that it doesnt do everything all the other programs do. Thats the same exact reason I haven't upgrraded; they seem to have tried to copy a lot of other programs' sequencers, and in doing so lost the original charm of Reason. I loved being able to just tap enter twice to get back to the beginning of the song. Now it just opens and closes an envelope bar or something. As for the comment about how nobody knows how audio software works, I would like to pose the question; do you? I have done my share of researching on how a lot of the back end programming works, and while not being a computer programmer myself, I sure know what goes on behind the scenes in most programs. I have, however, written many patches, many synthesizers in Reaktor and have been through so many technical forums on how music software is made, that I'm pretty sure I know more than what it sounds like you do. VST support itself, while not too taxing on the program when it isn't being used (though it does take up a fair amount from what I've looked at when I've turned off empty vst tracks in Live), once you actually add a program to the vst rack, it needs to load its own basic architecture in just to begin with, while there is also architecture going on in the host program. Basically, it wouldn't be terrible to add it in, it just wouldn't make sense to the average user when it already has a damn competent array of architecture to begin with. Not to get off on a tangent, but what I'm trying to get to is the fact that Reason is never going to have vst, because the people they are trying to make happy and the role they're trying to fill just doesn't include vst's. Its like buying a good synthesizer, playing it for a while and then saying that it fucking needs a goddamn sampler otherwise its a piece of shit. IT doesn't fit that role and doesn't need to. Now, I'm not saying everyone needs to have the same workflow as me, or anything, but Reason is mostly used as a workhorse program or used as a sketch-pad for a majority of the people it is being sold to. That is the role it plays and I don't think it will ever go out of style. I also don't want this to sound like an attack on Siamey, seeing as how I agree that they screwed up (in my eyes) on the new version.
  6. I have never seen so much ignorance in a thread. AS, Knives and Fishy are the only ones that know what the hell they're talking about. As I've mentioned many times before (and burnt-out many threads before this one with my rants), vst support in Reason is like giving a $3 hooker a retarded step-brother named Warren and then spot-welding him to her face. Its completely un-necessary and not what Reason is used for. Reason is meant to be STAND ALONE! That means everything you could ever want can be used in Reason to some extent. The ReWire support is for when you want another kind of effect or synthesizer added to the output of Reason. That is also why Reason only takes up as many cpu cycles as a softsynth; because its meant to be the end-all softsynth/sampler module. However, I do agree that the new sequencer in Reason is the sole reason (no pun intended) I haven't upgraded to R4 yet. If they gave the term "fucktardspacklestation with an anus-colored coat of un-needed fluff-paint" a definition, it would be that sequencer. Its the bastardized version of every other sequencer on the market vomited into one shitty envelope. And speaking of envelopes, its impossible to automate a damn envelope without making about 14 mouse clicks to get you there. Needless to say, I really do hate the new sequencer; and for that matter, I couldn't understand why everyone hated the original so strongly. You click on the track you want to edit, you click on the edit button, and then write in the little notes and automate with that straight-line tool. Its not difficult. Anyway, not to get off on a tangent, but I suppose I may just skip this update and grab R5 when it comes out. I now use Live and love it and would highly recommend it to anyone.
  7. heh, i tried for about an hour, but dear god; that one minute time limit is impossible. I'd like to ask to see a youtube of someone actually doing it. I can't decide if i should just run for it and kill as many people as i can as i run, or what. red-dick-you-lous.
  8. This game is like crack to me, im level 53 at the moment and already want to start over with the prestige thing. The only problem I have is that for some reason i feel that some of the achievements should be tied to multiplayer, instead of only the crazy-awesome rank experience. I see why they didnt, but once you get passed 52, you don't get any more weapons or anything other than the extras on the guns. Otherwise, the single player is amazing, if short, and the whole experience is like super-crack.
  9. I absolutely loved this song (and still do). the original was probably one of my most happily reflected audio sources from a game that just puts me in a good mood thinking about it. And I'd have to say that this ReMix takes every part and of the original and makes it wonderful-er. Great job Brian, I hope to hear more songs like this from you.
  10. See, my problem with the movie thus far is that the basic aesthetic of it looks WAY too close to the type of dreck that Spy Kids and Sharkboy and Lavagirl is. I didn't really have a problem with the dialog; thats just what speed racer was (i mean Dexter's Lab even made a parody episode of it with that same kind of crazy-ass dialogue). I'm just afraid its going to look way too SFX driven with the none-too-good SFX such as the crap kids movies it models its visuals around that i just mentioned.
  11. What the hell? This looks terrible! Apparently the Wachowski Brothers are doing a remake of this "classic". Now, I haven't been a huge fan of the shows or anything, but this looks horrible, even by my standards: http://media.movies.ign.com/media/034/034341/vids_1.html ...Discuss.
  12. I personally love my Novation X-Station. I just wish i could use it more; my ASIO driver is beyond fucked up and nothing i do seems to be making it work. But anyway, I found that from a synth-tweaking side its quite a fun synth to play with and has plenty of features that sound great. The only down-side i see is that in order to save your own patch, you have to overwrite existing patches... Which is kinda dumb, but they give you so many patches that it has been easy for me to find a few that i could do without that i have overwritten. Not to mention, the X-Station can double as a two-input recording device with its own great-sounding FX. I got mine for about 400, but you could probably find one for about 250 pretty easily considering it isn't real new. Happy hunting!
  13. This song is amazing. I absolutely love the soundtrack to SotC and i think that ReMix only improves it and should be included in the sequel. The mastering is great and all of the live instruments are great; who knew that a viola would work so well in a raging rock song? (not me) and the arrangement itself is quite topnotch, but what else would you expect from Cerrax? All in all, this is an excellent re-imagining from an already great soundtrack that has to be my favorite rock ReMix on the site. Good job guys!
  14. This is some pretty awesome stuff. I really like the time sig change at 2:00. You could make it a little more easing if you made whats playing kind of stop a 1/4 note before and then bang into it, but otherwise i like it. Good sounds and everything.
  15. I did this song for the Promo CD Danny's giving out with his physical album of Hero of the Grey Area (which is great by the way). It started out as pretty much a complete rip-off of Hybrid's "We Are In Control" and then evolved from there. Im going to actually include it on my first album that will hopefully be coming out late next year. I hope you enjoy it! I'm gonna send you to my MySpace page, but you can download the 192 kbps original from there. www.myspace.com/hybound or, to download it... www.soundclick.com/hybound
  16. Hero of the Grey Area (the song and the album... but in this instance the song) and Amity are both my absolute favorites. This is a great album that anyone who likes music should buy. My favorite album SGX's so far! Great stuff Danny!
  17. The only thing that worries me is if everyone is going to get motion-sickness from the movie... I mean that kind of cinematography is all well and good, for a little while. I just don't want to vomit back up my $23.00 nachos and $82.00 coke half-way through the movie.
  18. This is great stuff. I'm sorry I didn't comment on it until now. R.I.P. Reuben, you will be missed.
  19. I'm definitely going to miss Jeff, but I think the ethics at play are the most angering. We'll probably see him doing something else at another site based on how much of a following he has; it would be stupid NOT to hire him somewhere else. But the simple fact that he was fired because he gave one shitty review (and no, i disagree strongly that his other reviews were unprofessional. I always hope he's the one reviewing.) is reprehensible. However, I hope everyone will think a little bit before they cause the rest of the Gamespot crew to lose their jobs as well. I believe that what should happen is to cause enough of a shitstorm that CNet thinks about what a bunch of corporate cockjockeys they are being in doing this, and then to make them rethink how they do business. But I really do like Gamespot a lot and would be very sad if they went under because of this. The other guys there aren't quite as good as Jeff, but Gamespot feels much more personal than IGN or 1up and they actually try and be professional about making their podcasts not a series of "fuckin' fuck fuck mcfuck" jokes. It is a sad day for the gaming industry IMO.
  20. Hoooray! Extra incentive! I really want that T-Racks Mastering Suite.
  21. Huzzah! Another Remix I can attempt at. I've always really enjoyed Warhead. Good stuffs.
  22. May I recommend using either FL Studio or Ableton's Live for the Sequencer. I personally prefer the latter, as the work-flow is more what I'm used to, but FL is probably more common to find advice for around here, since about half of the people composing at OCR use FL in some way, shape or form. I started with Reason, which is also very usable, but not as high of quality sounds (though still quite high, don't get me wrong) as what you would find in Komplete. As for the synths, I would highly recommend Komplete as well, even though I don't have all of the items in it. I just was able to get my hands on Colossus, and boy do I love it. The sheer amount of incredibly usable instruments is very inspiring. I think Reaktor comes in Komplete as well, and for FX and synths there is no other way to go. It even lets you create your own synths and FX. All of the other programs that come with Komplete are great too, but if you're hurtin for cash, I would definitely suggest just starting out with Ableton Live (or FL Studio), Colossus, and Reaktor. If you're worried about losing the ability to play on a piano-like hard-synth, I would suggest a MIDI controller such as the MicroKorg, Minimoog, or the X-Station. They come with some great sounds and you can just use the MIDI input for your own sounds in your DAW (Ableton or FL). But please, whatever you do, BUY it, pirating the software only makes us have to pay more for it. (sorry for the preachy)
  23. You are now my hero seph... right behind this guy. I don't think I have ever actually laughed-out-loud at anything from the internet so far in my life. Not only have I laughed out loud, but I've woken up my fiance with my laughing and now need to go to bed... Bye bye.
  24. You guys are forgetting the Korg OASYS. 8 Grand and prolly the last hardware synth I would ever want. I was able to play around with it at the Guitar Center superstore out here when they first had it. That thing is SEXY! I even had it for a desktop background for a lil while. But I'd have to say, my Novation X-Station is really good for creating your own presets, even if it does overwrite the original presets. That thing is sexy as well. But if you want software synths; Reaktor is the best, most unlimited synth ever. And its cheap and filled with tons of FX, synths, beatboxes, sound generators and everything else you could ever want. If you have a computer-based workstation, hands down Reaktor is the best synth ever made.
