  1. So basically, to the best of your knowledge, there IS no easy way to program .sid music... except maybe a SID Station which is waaaaay out of my budget. I think I'll start with the Gameboy stuff and work my way up then. Good find by the way. There's some awesome stuff on that site.
  2. Yet another reason for me to blow money I don't have on a 360.
  3. First of all, this post amused me greatly. More people need to speak in Ebonics and bastardized Dungeons and Dragons dialects. I believe the Great Pretzel realizes that a lot of people think like this. It's a big part of the site's mission, and it's one that we have become more and more successful in carrying out. I'm a cynic myself and realize that most people are full of crap when it comes to music. However, Hobo is right: people do change... you might not be able no convince some particular individuals, but you can't deny that the public is becoming more and more accepting of vgm in light of things like Video Games Live, the Chiptune scene, the success of "novelty" bands like The Minibosses, and this site. Even Timbaland has managed to get chiptune-esque music into the Top 40, however unethical it may have been. I think this is why I'm okay that djp & co. set the bar for accepted remixes so high. Simply put, you can't (as the old mission statement used to say) prove that this music "is as intricate, innovative, and lasting as any other form" with stuff like a lot of the pre-1000 remixes. It has to be quality. I've also noticed that this site (maybe not the judges, but a lot of the reviewers and remixers) has a bit of a bias against vocal remixes, which is a bad thing when dealing with people who only like songs with words. I'll be the first to admit that I actually prefer the remixes that have words over the ones that don't, but there really aren't that many. If you want to ease people into OCR, you've got to ease them into it with music that would sound good to their ears... and there a lot of people out there that our current remix selection doesn't reach. (Read: more vocal remixes plz) EDIT: I for one, think ferret has some good points there... don't know if I agree with all of them, but in general, he makes a good case. If you've got a problem with what he said, then argue your point. Don't just throw insults and big words that make you feel smart.
  4. QFT I love DKC, but I'll take a next gen Battle Toads over DKC any day of the week.
  5. So I just got done watching it and looked at the website... apparently this is an official selection for SXSW Film Festival. For anyone who doesn't know what that means, it's kind of a big deal as far as indie films go. And like OverCoat said, it seems like their marketing strategy is to post it for free for a week to get the word out, then try and sell hard copies to people who liked it. Kinda like what Joss Whedon did with Dr. Horrible. Highly experimental, but hopefully it works out for them. It's worked out really well for musical artists like Machinae Supremacy, so maybe films will get a similar result. OverCoat: Thanks for the offer man. I might actually take you up on it eventually. For now, however, I'm dead broke, so getting my hands on a Gameboy, LSDJ, and/or a C64 is out of my non-existent budget. I'll check out that GoatTracker thing though. Is it relatively easy to pick up/user-friendly? I'm far from a computer geek, but I've spent enough time online to not computer dumb either. And how much do Gameboys, LSDJ, and a C64 run for anyway? I wouldn't mind putting the money into them once I actually get my hands on some cash, but the documentary said that Gameboys are getting harder and harder to find... and I imagine C64s are a similar case.
  6. Very nifty movie. Any idea what they're going to do with it once they take it down? It would be cool to purchase this on DVD and make all my nerdy musician friends watch. Makes me wish there was more of a demoscene going on in Cincinnati. Semi-off topic, I've always wanted to get into chiptune composing (particularly Gameboy and C64), but whenever I google it, I get bombarded with options and I can't seem to find a noob friendly starting point (i.e., I'm a competent musician, but I know very little about music technology outside of how to use Reason 3.0 and how MIDI's work.) Any suggestions?
  7. Every game with good graphics is overrated. When it comes out, people piss their pants like it's the best thing ever, then about 10 years later, everyone complains that it sucks. This is nothing new. By the way, I loved DKC back in the day, and I still do. Yeah, it's overrated, but overrated != bad. EDIT: Also, in regards to Aladdin for the SNES... I absolutely love that game. I haven't played the Genesis version however. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say the the Genesis version was 100x better, rather than that the SNES version was garbage. I know a lot of other people who really liked that game for the SNES.
  8. I think it's the same reason that when people see an average movie they have to go on about how terrible it was... people convince themselves that they have good taste and high standards by putting down art that doesn't match their narrow tastes exactly. They declare themselves experts and try to make themselves feel important by stereotyping certain groups together and declaring it all to be crap. On a broader level, it's the same problem that is at the root of things like racism. The only real difference is that most people have recently come to realize how ridiculous that line of logic is... but only in one particular situation. They will continue to judge and stereotype art because frankly, art isn't as quantifiable as skin color and art can't fight for it's rights.
  9. Screw nostalgia. CT and SD3 were awesome games and it a travesty that there weren't more games like them. It seems like every RPG today just wants to beat off to FF7.
  10. I've heard nothing but good stuff about this game... I'm glad to see that artsy, intelligent games like Portal, Okami, and now this are really getting a lot of press lately. I want to try this out soooo bad, but I have no xbox...
  11. FYI, for the people that didn't catch my sarcasm, there isn't really a bias against orchestral stuff here if you ask me. If anything, it's one of the biggest genres to sort though on this site. If you haven't checked them out yet, Jeremy Robson, Jared Hudson, Russel Cox, and Reuben Kee's orchestral stuff are all pretty awesome. Also check out Chrono Symphonic... there's some pretty good stuff on there. I can also vouch for DarkeSword's music. They're pretty great. I've never gotten the impression he was egotistical... but frankly, with music like that, he has every right to be if he wants to.
  12. There's a general bias against orchestral mixes here. Sorry. You're outta luck.
  13. Well, if it's free I guess it's worth a shot. But yeah, it does kinda sound like a stupid idea.
  14. This is a lot cooler than I was expecting. I've already written down a few artist names too look into.
  15. I just saw this thread for the first time a second ago, but I'm listening. Sounds like there's still a lot left to listen to.
  16. My old joke-band, Math Blaster wrote one of our greatest "hits" this way, except it took us about 4 minutes. Coincidentally, the song was about having to pee really bad. But seriously... this Kwakfest thing sounds kinda nifty. I don't go into the Compo forum often enough to know if we're already doing something like this (I always forget it's there), but if we aren't, I'd be really interested in getting something like this started with the OCR community. Sometimes my best stuff comes when I'm pressed for time and I have to do it quickly. Also, this song is like funky sex.
  17. Apparently this happens to good actors too... http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN0431111920080804
  18. I am so on this. Though I agree that it's going to be tough to come up with an interesting melody just based on source.
  19. So, are there, like, no musicians on this forum or something?
  20. I think maybe Bumblebee forgot that Shia was still inside...
  21. I was going to give you an early happy birthday the day before, so I wouldn't forget, but I told myself I'd remember. I didn't. I suck. Happy belated birthday.
  22. I dunno... I guess I always thought most of OCR was above this kind of behavior these days. I remember that... actually I guess that's my problem with all this. It reminds me way to much of the old days when half the threads would derail because a bunch of people were always trolling and arguing about something. The site has gotten a lot more mature since then. Then again, I suppose I'm not doing much to stop the whining and derailing by whining and derailing myself, so I'll stop posting in here now.
  23. that's what she said roffle This actually looks like it has the chance to be a decent remake. It would be cool if they stayed more true to the Frank Miller version than the original did... unlikely, but cool. Still, unless the previews really suck, Hollywood has probably made another 9 bucks off of me.
