  1. the heads on the hard drive can't spin fast enough with the added resistance caused by the oil. all hard drives have a hole in them to allow pressure to equalize, which is where the oil gets in. SSDs are fine in oil, but optical drives and hard drives - aka anything that moves but isn't a fan - will crap out quickly. i'm surprised yours lasted as long as it did! and you're right, dust will foul the oil quickly and raise the heat index of the oil to a dangerous level. i'd advise against using anything but new components in a system like this unless you're going to filter the oil, which really is a waste of energy unless you're using a radiator that might clog or something.
  2. look for a computer that's got the following. -at least a 2.5ghz dual-core processor - athlon or intel. MUST be dual-core. -at least two gigs of ram for xp, four for vista. more the better. -7200rpm hard drive (it makes a BIG difference), as much space as you think you'll need. 250's pretty good if you don't do something stupid like leave movies on it or something. -chill pad (this is an aftermarket thing get a chill pad for 20$ and extend your computer's life for a year or two). your big concern is audio, then - word processing is very easy for any computer to do, so you just want raw processing power. you don't need some special audio card or anything - just straight-line computational speed. is there a specific reason you want a laptop? desktops are always better than laptops in terms of cost, they'll always outpace a laptop's performance, and since you'll be at college you'll be near enough to your system to use it. buy a shitty laptop off of ebay for fifty dollars (like i did...xubuntu ran like a dream on it) and put the cash into your desktop. no one actually NEEDS to compose on the go, anyways, the only reason to have a nice laptop is if you fly a lot. a netbook or an old craptop is all you need for taking notes in class =)
  3. internet is serious business. jared, you take this too seriously. quit fanboying.
  4. the 2000 is much more hackable, and it's just as good as the 3000 in terms of the tradeoffs.
  5. haven't heard from him since he sent me that pm, but i'm hoping he's back on the train for good. editP: i should mention i might (might is the key term) be doing a remix with the recent newbie OCRemixer katethegreat19. if i put something together, and she decides she wants to sing it, and my part isn't horrid compared to her voice.
  6. projectors are overrated. go with a bigass monitor (newegg sells a 27.5" hanns-g monitor for 350$) and you'll be fine until you've got 3k for the projector and a good screen. the fishtank is cool =) well, not literally, it runs near 90 degrees C - but it doesn't matter, because science says that it's not spiking and so as a result will last forever. seriously, though, a year at 90c and no ill effects on anything? sign me up.
  7. the mix was for the OCR project, originally, and i dropped it (with avaris's Breakbeat Market track) because of a percieved lack of progress. the project promptly got back on track, of course, but i didn't want to abandon avaris at that point =) i wasn't involved in mustin's project, no.
  8. i've never played either game, though. at least i've played DKC 2.
  9. he was commenting on the fact that no one (except for wacky, once and a while) uses font colors since they're a little five years ago. you should get into barbershopping, like some of the other guys on this site (escariot). best way to improve your voice. contribute to the site in the form of posts and stuff in general, and put that you're a singer in your sig. the best way to get collab requests is to be known for what you do - that's where i get all mine, i'm one of the better sax players on the site and have a couple remixes to prove it. fishy's known for being a guitar shredder, pixie's known for melting 16-year-old boy's ears off...you get the picture. another way is to pop into projects and volunteer your abilities for anyone who needs them. i know lufia's getting off the ground, and link's awakening and super dodgeball are still chugging along.
  10. i'll pay five dollars for your copy of FF7, pez.
  11. no minimum bid for anything? hell yeah i'll bid! edit: poop stains... =( =( =(
  12. if one of those three green tracks drops, let me know and i'll whip something up quick. i've got a lot of free time lately.
  13. oh, hey, that's not bad. i'll plan on that then, and i'll let you know when i order.
  14. this question might have already been answered, so sorry if it has been. if i want to buy both versions of the kit, is there a way i can do this? like, i'd like it in both formats - i don't need the samples in both formats, but i'd like both sets of presets and all that. would i have to buy the whole set twice, or is there a package deal? this isn't going to be immediate, but when my XBLA game gets funding from a publisher i get a pretty large budget for samples and stuff, and i planned on picking up all three sound libraries from you guys. edit: you might want to update the front page of your website - it still says that Groove Bias is 'coming soon' with a release date that was about a month ago.
  15. save it. there's some good DL titles coming this summer for all genres.
  16. yeah, and the rest was shipping, my own fees, and paypal.
  17. for what it's worth, he got a system based around a q9550, 4 gb of ram, and a 9800gtx+ graphics card. he got two major components used (from me), and it cost around 1100$ or so, right? i don't remember. so, can i throw out the boxes now? =)
  18. if you like horror games and can't afford a good pc, dead space is excellent. i personally hate them, but i still thought the production and backstory on it for the first fifteen minutes were pretty damn good. ninja gaiden's ridiculously hard but still fun.
  19. hey, forgot i subbed that way back when =) so happy i finally got a mix past the judges. fourteen tries =)
  20. hey, i forgot about this. hooray, my first solo mix! been a little while since i did this one =)
  21. star ocean's voice actors are absolutely horrid, possibly the worst in any game i've ever played. how do these people get hired? i'll vomit into a mic and give the mp3 to them if it'll get me in a game, and it'll sound better.
  22. master of ellipses? try master of understatement.
  23. i mentioned it. it's worth pointing out that, as a AAA title, it's not the absolute best graphics or the most bug-free experience. mercer gets caught on walls, glitches around the map occasionally, and there's some damn hard levels that are far more difficult than they were intended to be (i think). there's also little to do after the 20-hour mark or so. but it's incredibly entertaining while it lasts. did i mention afro samurai? same deal - not much beyond the first time through the story unless you're a completionist, but it's SO much fun. the soundtrack kicks ass, too.
