Poke'G
I have long enjoyed Total Annihilation. It's as old as Starcraft, which ended up completely over shadowing the game, but there's still a dedicated fanbase out there for those willing to look. atmuh
Darwinia isn't half bad... oh wow i forgot i bought this when i got a huge indie pack on steam a while back thanks for reminding me!
Skummel Maske
Total Annihilation is still the only RTS for me.
RedFusion
Not really your typical RTS, but I've been pretty hooked on Sins of a Solar Empire recently.
Tensei
But starcraft is REALLY REALLY good! D: Empire: Total War then.
Hy Bound
To the people who said Total Annihilation, i dont disagree, but Supreme Commander is a whole lot better imo... More interesting setup and units. But yeah, its just a new version of TA, so you cant go wrong with either.

relyanCe
if you have a ps2 get GrimGrimoire. its a simple, fun, quirky rts that has a very good interface.
Lunarfall
When not reaching for Starcraft in my RTS days it would be Age of Empires 2 or C&C.
SoulinEther
i've played total annihilation and total annihilation kingdoms as my first RTS's. TA is totally customizable (and its awesome soundtrack is in regular CD audio format) with tons of new units, unit packs, total conversions, etc available. TA:K isn't nearly as customizable (or at least, it doesn't have as big of a fan base) but I personally preferred it for its setting (swords and magic as opposed to guns and nukes - note: TA doesn't have any hand to hand combat units)
Native Jovian
ps2 rts good interface. WHAT. No, seriously, did you seriously say that a console RTS had a good interface?
The Biznut
Star Command Deluxe kept me interested for quite sometime a few years back. If you can find it give that a shot!
duskvstweak
The game that got me into the RTS genre was Age of Empires: Rise of the Romans, and then it was Starcraft. I've yet to find an RTS that matches those series. But when you take Starcraft away, go for Age of Empires II. That game is amazing and playing it with friends is something that can't be matched. My brother really enjoys the WarHammer games...
Triad Orion
Can't really get better than Age of Empires II if you take StarCraft out of the mix. Though I remember Rise of Nations being pretty fun back in the old days too, and there's Age of Mythology if that's your thing. Star Wars: Empire at War was pretty fun if you only did Space battles. The ground battles were boring as hell, though.
The Derrit
Darwinia isn't half bad... Is this game worth buying? I remember back in the day it was like the very first indie game through steam, or at least the first important one and everyone made a big deal out of how it was going to change the landscape of downloadable gaming. relyanCe
WHAT.No, seriously, did you seriously say that a console RTS had a good interface? Yeah, seriously, I did. Yes, I know it has to be seen to be believed. So go play it. EDIT: Kraid.
