orkybash Posted May 23, 2002 Posted May 23, 2002 Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island 'Dino Band Rehearsal' Well, what can I say? Another hit from McV, this time in a ragtime style that suits the original perfectly and is executed very well. It's short, but it *feels* like it's just the right length. Highly recommended. Quote
dilbert627 Posted June 9, 2002 Posted June 9, 2002 The original was probably my favorite song from that game, and this style fits it PERFECTLY. The only thing I would have liked to be different would for there to be more of it. It's a little short. Also, it would have been cool to add another instrument (jazz style saxophone or clarinet maybe?). Great mix though. Quote
Otaku_Ohki Posted July 10, 2002 Posted July 10, 2002 I love this remix! Personally, I think it is the best one on the site. It sounds like its own song, but also sound exactly like the original, which was a great song to begin with! I don't know if McVaffe ever looks around here, but I thought I'd let him know that this song inspired me to draw a picture from that game. I listened to this song as I drew it, inked it, and colored it! Thanks for the great beats for this great game, McVaffe! Quote
Woffester Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 The remix it self is excellent as far as sonic quality is concerned, but has little variation and is lacking layers. BUT WAIT! In this case it is a good thing! It is exactly what is called for and is by no means a condescending comment. Its great and perfect the way it is. Quote
bulletproofpossom Posted August 12, 2002 Posted August 12, 2002 I have always been a fan of rag time music. I have always been a fan of Yoshi's Island. I forgot about the music, though, until SSBM. Now I'm a fan of Yoshi's music. This song is great and left me grinning. Quote
EntroPi Posted August 18, 2002 Posted August 18, 2002 This song is excellent and just what the doctor ordered, but I have two major gripes. A) An excellent piano sound is used but the melody/bass is far too much separated, ruining for me what would have been a very realistic piece. I can't hear them perfectly, but I'm fairly sure that some (well most) of the bass octave to chord transitions would be impossible - it's just not possible to move one's hands instantly. That 'holding' effect comes as a result of pedaling, which I didn't hear, as it should have affected the melody as well in that case. And, obviously, the sound of the notes. But I'm getting picky here. 9.5/10 for this awesome piece - kudos to McV for daring to do ragtime. Quote
Kooper909 Posted August 18, 2002 Posted August 18, 2002 Wow ... McVaffe comes up huge again. This song is amazing. McVaffe's remixes always make my day ... they are so incredibly well done that they flow seamlessly and sound almost effortless, despite their stellar quality of both sample quality and arrangement. Three thumbs up. Quote
Jimmy the Lip Posted November 27, 2002 Posted November 27, 2002 Yoshi's Rag is one my favorite ReMixes that has come out of this site, period. It is very realistic and incorporates naught of the techno genre, which is pleasing to those of us who you might call "music purists". This piece fits very well the atmosphere of the original game in its light-heartedness and fun air. The piece starts off with a ragtime-style piano and light percussion until it is joined by the bass at about the 25" mark. The piece pulls into a higher key for the last thirty seconds or so before ending at a total of 1 minute and 30 seconds, and for the quality of the piece this is far too short a length. McVaffe is highly acclaimed in the ReMixing circle, and rightly so, not just for this mix but for his others. If the site administrator decided to make an album of this site's best, Yoshi's Rag would be a prime contender. A great piece of music ReMixed flawlessly by the incomparable McVaffe. Not quite as rowdy as McVaffe's "Phazeremix Rag", but for all intents and purposes I believe I prefer this piece over his ragtime mix from Super Mario Bros. 2. A recommended download for all. Quote
Joe Redifer Posted November 27, 2002 Posted November 27, 2002 I love it when McVaffe does ragtime. I remember back in his old AOL MIDI days he had quite a few original ragtime songs that were very enjoyable. Yoshi's Rag is a great piece of work, but not my favorite McV ragtime tune. That would go to the MIDI titled simply "MCVRAG2.MID" I got from AOL about 45 years ago (it seems). Keep up the rag! Quote
DrumUltimA Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 Wow. This song makes me dance. Love it! =D Quote
Longinus Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I absolutely love this. It's one of my favorite remixes on the site and a great rag (even with the addition of some non-traditional elements). Quote
djBOB Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 lovin it.. lovin it.. u know what, I'm gonna start DJing OCREMIX songs at parties.. such a wide variety.. we could have ourselves a blast Quote
Falcovsleon20 Posted March 3, 2004 Posted March 3, 2004 Oh crap this is a good song yet could be a bit longer. Scratch that. MUCH longer. I give it a 5.5/10. Quote
Corporal Eschebone Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Yup, this song has a real nice feel about it. Short 'n sweet. Catchy too. Quote
Tex Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 McVaffe has another nice work here. Athletic Theme is my favourite music from Yoshi's Island. The piano is brilliant and beautiful. Simple and adorable remix. Highly recommended. =^.^= Quote
lady zelda Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 This is so much fun, short and sweet! I just wanna sit down listening to this and bounce up and down in my chair, lol! That's how uplifting it is. Scott Joplin ain't got nothing on this! Good stuff, McVaffe! Quote
Kurokun1293 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 It should be mandatory for good remixes to be at least 3 minutes long. a minute and a half of this!? This makes the "Entertainer" look like a horribly sung Britney Spears song. catchy, addictive, and too short! But highly reccomended. Quote
TheAverageJoe Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 addictive, and too short! But highly reccomended. well put. it is a bit short. but really catchy and on a nicely put tempo. Quote
OceansAndrew Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Really short, but fun. Much like this review. Hah, just joking. It's a good genre adaptation, though beyond a few counterpoint ideas that aren't added until later on, it's a pretty simplistic, though engaging take on the theme. If you want cheering up, this is your mix! Quote
Lucentas Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 An awesome take on the source material, this has flair written all over it. Quote
Yoshiboy Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I was going to make some of the songs from this website in a fanfic of mine. This goes good with a tavern scene. Btw, didn't this song was called something else? I remember this song from before but I can't quite put my finger on it. Hmm... Anyways, cool song! Quote
42 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Ah short and so sweet... This reminds me so much of one of those old timey ragtime player pianos. Normally I'd complain about how short a mix like this is, but it just works as it is. It's so tightly encapsulated that to draw it out would ruin it. My only objection is the ending; it's too abrupt. Wham! and it's over... Still this is a great little mix and worth checking out. Quote
Crulex Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 They should have renamed this Super McVaffe World 2. Out of 6 tracks, he's done 4 and they are all awesome! This reminds me of that ragtime song "hello, my honey" or whatever it's called. It is short, but that's the only fault I see. Great piano work and a unique take on the track. Ragtime rocks. Quote
999taira Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 I've made a video with this song. If U wonna watch it: I've looped the song once because I needed it longer. Also mine fav theme from Yoshis Island. Quote
