OK, here's a shot at improvements. Two options with different interpolation methods. If you like either of them, let me know and I'll do the rest the same way. If you don't, tell me which you prefer and I'll work on improving them in that direction.

I don't mind the lack of custom avatars, as it makes it so that the existing avatars are all consistent, and similarly sized.

What I do mind is that it has been over a year and 5 months since I posted that VVVVVV avatar (want want want want want want).

Anywho, back to lurking.

LT: Back to lurking. We'll see when you notice your avatar change. :-)

Gosh, I'm a week late for my yearly avatar-thread-check and look what happens. That'll show me.

The Player's Pin from The World Ends With You. A rather important icon overall within the game, it even shows up as the icon when you're booting the game up.

So here ya go.

LT: Need some transparency action there. Possibly sharper resolution as well.

Here's a few Megaman Zero 2 ones I threw together, for a quick try at some representation for my favorite Megaman subseries:

LT: The quality isn't sharp, and the stray pixels around the characters don't look smooth at all.

Freelancer icon:

#1 freelancer.gif original (cropped semi-transparent pixels)

#2 freelancer-average.gif mix between #1 and #3

#3 freelancer-sharpened.gif sharpened version of #1

I can try to put this on a background if you think the edges are too sharp.

There's also a 38x44 version, but it looks like the 32x32 rule is still in effect despite at least one avatar breaking the rule.

That explains why no one else has posted anything in this thread since 2013 :) Thanks!

EDIT: Will we still be limited to .gif? Can't think of a good reason not to allow for .png, but I guess that's already been brought up...

Preloaded forum avatars will be going away with the migration to IPB. People will be able to set custom avatars after the migration.

This is great news. Though if I may ask, will this come with any kind of restrictions on the user-side (size, resolution, sharpness)?

Props to Larry for all the hard work on quality control that helped maintain OCR's avatar consistency across the aeons. :nicework:

I sure hope so. Can you imagine what this forum will turn into if people are allowed to have 1920x1080 animated .gif avatars?

Forum avatars are cropped and resized when you upload them. There's a filesize limit on uploads, and then a resizable box that you use for cropping. Avatars can't be animated.

Content that's allowed in avatars follows the same general guidelines for sigs. Basically no porn, no gross stuff, etc. If you can't put it in your sig, you can't put it in your avatar.

This is exciting! When will this be implemented?

Time to get updating your profile pics, as the end of an era has arrived and forum avatars are no longer in play!!

My personal thanks to any & all who chipped in over the vBulletin years to make our forums a lot more fun, especially to Larry who coordinated the overall effort and put some serious time in. Have we moved on? Yes. Do I think people will ultimately prefer the personalization afforded by profile pics? Yes. Did we have some fun w/ our itty-bitty avatars over the years? You betcha. :nicework:
